Decorating your home for any holiday is a great way to get into the spirit! Here is a fun, easy, and inexpensive presidents silhouettes craft that will dress up your festive decorations. It is a great way to celebrate any patriotic holiday in your home or classroom.

Most of us decorate with the colors we all know red, white, and blue, however, these presidents silhouettes are a special way to incorporate the reason we celebrate any patriotic holiday. As I was decorating my home, I wanted something that isn’t usually displayed or truly remembered during this independence day holiday. I wanted to make a decoration that required little clean-up as well as paying a tribute to some of our U.S. founding fathers.

DIY Presidents Silhouettes Craft

While creating this cute inexpensive patriotic decoration, I also thought that it could be used for multiple patriotic holidays serving multiple purposes such as flag day, memorial day, President's day, and independence day just to name a few.

With the 4th of July just around the corner, this simple DIY presidential silhouette craft is a great way to spice up any area in your home. The three profile portraits we will be showing you today are Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson.

We cannot wait to share with you this tutorial on how to create your own presidential silhouette showcasing your founding fathers of choice.

DIY Presidents Silhouettes Supplies

Before you start your president silhouette craft, here are a list of supplies you will need in order to create your own DIY president silhouette.

Most of these supply items are in your home already. If there are any supplies you might be lacking for this project, you can find most of these at Michaels, Office Depot, Joann fabrics, Home Depot or Lowes. Now let’s get started in creating your president silhouette!

DIY President Silhouette Steps

The first step to making your wooden profile portrait boxes is cutting your 2 x 4 piece of wood into squares. We made ours on a smaller scale, however, you can cut them to fit your desired length.

Cut 2 x 4 into a square for presidential silhouette to sit on.

Sanding

Secondly, sand all sides of your square to make it a smooth surface. You will then take your tack cloth or damp paper towel to remove any of the grit left over from sanding.

Paint Block of Wood

Next, you will paint all sides of your square with chalk paint. As you wait for the paint to dry, you will use your printer to download and print your U.S. president silhouette free printable.

To get access to this free print all you have to do is subscribe to my newsletter.  Once you have subscribed you will receive another email with a link to another page that holds all my free printables. This clip art is under the American patriotic section.

Cut Out the Silhouette

Once you have downloaded the face profiles onto cardstock simply cut around the edges.  I find it is easiest to do this by cutting close first then moving the paper around while cutting into the fine details.

Cut out the president profiles

Be patient on this step.  The more detailed your cuts the better the silhouette turns out.

Distress the Painted Blocks

After the paint has dried and you have completed the application of the silhouette on cardstock, you will sand the edges and distress the painted blocks.

Distress the wood with a sander to apply president silhouettes

I did this simply by running the sander over different spots to remove some of all the paint. You can use a glaze if desired but it is not needed for this particular craft.

Decoupaging President Profiles

Next use a sponge brush and apply decoupage on the back of the us president.

Apply decoupage to the back of the president head

Then brush decoupage on one side of the wood block.

Brush decoupage on a painted wood block for silhouette

Next, adhere the silhouette to the block and press down on the center and edges in order to smooth out any bubbles. You will then apply decoupage on top of the silhouette and the face of the block.

Adding decoupage to the top of a president silhouette patriotic decoration

Finishing Touches

Finally, you will let it dry. You will notice there are darker areas. When the decoupage is dry those spots will go away.

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson silhouette craft

Once your craft is complete decorate with them in your home, holiday party, classroom, homeschool room by hanging them or sitting them on a table.

Conclusion

Here are a few fun places you can decorate with your president profile blocks.  You can hang them on the wall one at a time or attach them to a piece of twine or ribbon as I did in this Mother’s day flower printable DIY.  But my favorite is to stack them and sit them in an accessory ensemble.

Presidents silhouette decorations

They would also look amazing paired with other patriotic decorations like this pennant banner I placed over the top of my hutch and the Betsy Ross American flag.

Patriotic decorations of presidents of America

I have so many more homemade patriotic decor ideas using red, white, and blue and I also have a pennant banner template that you can print out and make for your hutch.  It is very easy to make.

I mentioned in the beginning that this would be cute for classrooms and homeschool rooms. Well, what a fun way to decorate your room or make it as a craft for Presidents day or any patriotic holiday. And it would make a great gift for a social studies teacher or American history buff.

I hope you have enjoyed this do-it-yourself craft and I cannot wait to hear where you used these patriotic decorations.

DIY PENNANT BANNER

SUPPLIES

First, you will need to gather these basic supplies! Here is what you will need:

Pennant Banner Template supplies

HOW DO YOU MAKE A PENNANT BANNER

It is very simple to make a triangle shape pennant flag banner. You can make them with fabric or paper. All you need are a few simple supplies like glue or a sewing machine to adhere them to a piece of string or bias tape.

Now let's look at how to make a paper pennant banner with a sewing machine. After you have gathered all your supplies let's start by measuring the length of your banner.

STEP 1: MEASURE

In the first step, you are going to want to measure the desired length of your bias tape based on where you will be hanging the banner.

Some people like to hang their pennant banner flags on their mantle while others like hanging them on the wall. In that case, you will want to measure your mantle or wall and add about 10 to 12 inches to the tape you cut.

.

In the next step, print out this quick template. Go to our free printable library to find them! You can find our library by going to Life on Summerhill's menu and selecting the Free Printable Library.

To gain access, simply sign up and join the family! We'll send you an access code so that you can get started on your pennant banner.

STEP 3: CUT OUT THE BANNER TRIANGLES

After you have printed out the pennant template, carefully cut out the pennant shape of each triangle so that each one is the same size.

Pennant banner template red stripe seersucker and blue chambray

STEP 4: CREATE PATTERN

Make sure to layout each triangle shape in the desired pattern. Hold them up to the bias tape side by side to make sure that you have enough of the pennants printed out.

Pennant banner template create pattern

Carefully place the pennants one at a time inside the fold of your cut bias tape. Place them right next to each other, but leave a little room on the ends (about an inch) to fold over and stitch later.

This video will show you how to do this and every step of the pennant banner.

STEP 5: SEWING

Now it's time to do some sewing or you can use glue! I raised the stitch to about 5.0 because I wanted a nice big, fat stitch on the bias tape.

And finally, stitch along the edge of the bias, setting the individual pennants in place in the tape. When you finish fold in the ends and stitch them in place.

FINISHED PRODUCT

Your final step is to find a place to hang it. I used tiny nails to tack it to my porch wall but you can use command hooks or thumbtacks.

This banner is an adorable way to add character to any room, party or in my case porch for the 4th of July.

  • White thread
  • Printable
  • Bias tape

Tools

  • Printer
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

  1. First step is to measure how long you want your banner and add 10 to 12 extra inches. Then cut a piece of bias tape to that length and lay it out straight on a flat surface (you can find bias tape in the fabric section at sewing stores)
  2. Second step is downloading and printing this pennant banner triangles on linen paper. (You can use regular paper too but I used linen paper to give it a more fabric texture). You have four patterns to print. You can use all four or pick out only three. Print as many as you will need for the banner.
  3. Next cut out the pennant triangles
  4. Fourth step is to lay out the pattern in the same order over and over. I did red gingham, floral, red and blue stripe and chambray and then open the fold of the bias tape and place the triangle inside.
  5. Fifth sew along the bottom edge of the bias tape with a large stitch making sure to secure the stick at the beginning and end by moving forward and back several times. (You can sew this by hand or use glue to attach the bias tape to the paper pennants)
  6. Now you are all finished and can hang your flag banner anywhere.

Today I am sharing this DIY patriotic wood sign. Learn how to make farmhouse signs with this easy DIY farmhouse sign tutorial. This shiplap wooden sign looks great for holiday decor or everyday home decor. Follow along as we walk through the steps on how to make wooden signs with sayings.

Using an old canvas piece of art learn how to make farmhouse signs that are budget friendly and very easy.

Last week I did some decorating for the 4th of July and I made this DIY farmhouse sign for the mantle. It was easy to make and pretty inexpensive so I thought I would share how you can make wooden signs with sayings with you.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

How to Make Farmhouse Signs

Farmhouse signs are a great way to get that farm style vibe when decorating your home. You can use them for everyday decorations or for holidays. You can buy them or make your own farmhouse sign. I decided to make one for my patriotic decorations.

DIY farmhouse sign that says liberty decorated on our fireplace mantle.

I love mixing old, new, and homemade decor. And since the mantle is the heart of the home I wanted something different there. So this year I decided to make my own DIY sign and whip up something for the mantle so it will flow with the rest of the patriotic decorations. Let's get started making this farmhouse shiplap large sign by gathering supplies.

DIY Farmhouse Sign Supplies

Canvas Frame

To begin, start with a canvas frame. I found an old one at Goodwill but you can buy a new one. I love to repurpose things and I love a good deal!

DIY farmhouse sign upcycled from an old canvas piece of art.
.

Remove Staples and Hooks

Next, remove any staples and hooks the easy way with a screwdriver and pliers from the wood frame. I used this flat head screwdriver tool with a pointed edge. It really helped to get under the staples to pull them out.

DIY farmhouse sign made from an old canvas piece of art. Starting by removing the staples on the back.

Measure Frame

Now that you have a simple frame measure the width and length of the frame. After you have the measurements you will need to determine how many boards to cut based off of the height.

DIY farmhouse sign made from an old canvas piece of art. Starting by removing the staples on the back and then measure the frame.

I needed five boards to fill up the frame. They will hang over on the top and bottom about a 1/4″ but that is okay.

Measure and Cut Board

Your next step is simple. Measure the boards based on the width. My frame is 36″ side so each board was cut at 36 inches.

DIY farmhouse sign showing how we measured each board.

You can use a miter saw like mine or you can cut it with a hand saw. Another option is to have your hardware store cut the boards to the desired length.

DIY farmhouse sign showing cutting the boards

Now that you have all your pieces of wood let's sand your wood pieces.

Sand the Board

Now it is time to sand the boards down. I decided to do some light sanding which meant that each board was not perfectly smooth. But you can determine how smooth you want your boards.

DIY farmhouse sign showing sanding the boards

Place Boards on Frame

Next place each board on the frame snugging them up to each other. Once I had all the boards on the frame and shifted them a little until they hung over equally on the top and bottom

DIY farm house sign showing laying all the shiplap style boards on the frame.

Nail Boards into the Frame

Now simple nail the boards into the frame with finishing nails. The easiest way is to use a nail gun but if you do not have a nail gun you can use finishing nails and a hammer. Sink the nails down a little into the wood.

How to make a sign nailing the boards into the frame.

Make sure the nails are going into the frame behind the wood. All my nails went down the sides like in this photo.

Spackle the Holes

Follow the last step by spackling the holes. I use my finger to do this step. Once I have rubbed the spackle into the hole then I wipe off the surface to remove any excess spackle.

Easy sign DIY spackling where the nails have been sunk into the wood.

Paint the Shiplap

We are getting to the fun part. Next, start painting the shiplap with paint. I used Fusion mineral paint color Champness because I wanted a chambray matte finish but you can use chalk paint or milk paint. A great place to get Fusion paint is at Baker-Nest.

Painting the boards with Fusion mineral paint color champness to make a patriotic sign

Paint Texture Design

Take some white paint and pour a little into a cup. Next using your wet blue paintbrush mix the white chalk paint and blue together. This will soften the white paint color for a little dry brushing.

DIY farmhouse sign using distress techniques with Fusion mineral paint

Next, lay out a dry paper towel and dab off any excess paint from the paint brush. You want the paint brush to a dry state. Now you are ready to start painting again.

DIY farmhouse sign painting a distress technique.

Simply free hand brushstrokes of paint lightly onto the shiplap. Be sporadic and brush it on here and there. This painting technique gives it that vintage farmhouse wood sign vibe.

Simple sign painting a distress technique.

Distress by Sanding

Now let's add a distressed look. Take the sandpaper and start rubbing down the corners, edges, and across the middle here and there. Be as random as possible.

How to make a farmhouse sign by sanding away the paint for a distress look.

Some areas will have more paint removed while others will be just a little paint removed.

DIY farmhouse sign sanding away the paint for a distress look.

Roughing it up helps get a more rustic look and makes it look vintage.

Position Lettering

Next, place the wood lettering on the shiplap sign wherever you fancy. I like the idea of an off-centered design. So my letters were placed at the bottom right.

DIY farmhouse sign position lettered saying on the shiplap.

If you are wondering where I got my liberty lettering I found it in the dollar spot at Target. I love finding a deal!!

Secure Lettering

So here is a place where what I did may not be perfect for you. I nailed the liberty lettering down but you may want to change out your lettering with the holiday.

If you want to change out your lettering consider a removable tape. Make sure it is strong enough to hold your letters. Another idea is to use a Cricut or Silhouette machine and make lettering for your beautiful farmhouse sign.

Now all you need to do is hang your new piece of farmhouse art.

Conclusion

See how easy it is to create your patriotic wood sign? When I did this project I couldn't wait to show you how to make wooden farmhouse signs with sayings.

There are so many ideas of words to put on DIY wood signs. You can put a scripture on the sign, a favorite quote, names like your last name or a child's first name, or words like love.

Wood signs are the perfect farmhouse decor. They are great for large and small spaces. Hanging on a wall or sitting on a shelf.

Here is another photo of the finished product and how I styled it on my mantle. It pulled together all my patriotic decor in the living room nicely.

Which reminds me if you need more ideas on how to style mantles check out my DIY fall decor mantle post.

Whether it is the 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, President's Day, or Flag day these red, white, and blue decorations will give your home decor an explosion of patriotic vibe.

Patriotic holidays run all through the year which is why I love red, white and blue decorations. I also love giving you ideas so here are some fourth of July home decoration tips from the front porch to the fireplace mantle.

This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using the links below.  All opinions are all my own.

Red,White and Blue Decorations

July party decorations are a fun way to celebrate all the holiday. Here is an idea using old vintage decor on your party table.

4th of July table decorations with vintage centerpiece

I love using patriotic party supplies that are sitting around my house so here I used anything I could find that had all the American flag colors to create a patriotic table setting. Patriotic celebrations are so fun! I created another table using the same red white blue decorations but a different centerpiece for fourth July.

red, white and blue decorations for a fourth of July tablescape

Here is a 4th of July tablescape idea that is filled with red, white, and blue color schemes. It was so fun and inspiring until I couldn't wait to share more ideas for a July celebration. So, let's start outside on my small front porch for more patriotic decorations.

Patriotic Small Front Porch

red, white and blue decorations on a small front porch for July 4

I want to encourage you to think of your front porch whether it is small or large as another room of your home. This space is an indication of what guests will receive inside.

So here are a few easy changes that instantly give it patriotic feels.

red, white and blue decorations on a small front porch for the July 4th.

Starting at the top and working our way down begin with adding a patriotic wreath or garland around the door. I have had this wreath for many years and I am still not tired of it so if you have a wreath you can put up for each patriotic holiday go ahead and include it.

One thing I changed on this wreath this year as opposed to last year is the way it is hung. In my 4th of July decorating ideas last year I hung the wreath with a metal hanger. This year I decided on a ribbon for a softer touch.

red, white and blue decorations on a small front porch for the 4th of July

Another inexpensive and fun touch is adding these Target dollar spot pinwheels to the planter.

red, white and blue decorations on a small front porch for the 4th of July using a pinwheel

Simply drop a few pinwheels for flags in your planter and like magic, you have given your planter some red, white, and blue decorations.

Talk about easy!

red, white and blue decorations on a small front porch for the 4th of July using layered rugs

And last for the front porch pick up a red, white, and/or blue rug to layer your doormat. I found this one on clearance and boy did it transform the front porch with color.

Entryway

Now let's walk in the front door and give our guest a little more independence day feels in the entryway.

red, white and blue decorations in the entryway

Here are some more easy ideas and cheap too. Again I raided the dollar spot at Target and pulled out a few of my own items from last year.

red, white and blue decorations in the entryway with American stick flags in a lambs ear wreath

Starting from the top I added a stick American stick flags to my lamb's ear wreath to give it a July wreath vibe. This wreath get's decorated all year long. I got the wreath from an Etsy shop called The Whimsical Door. She has loads of other amazing wreaths but this one is versatile.

There are so many places you can add stick flags. You can add them to flower arrangements, plants, or wreaths as I did here.

red, white and blue decorations in the entryway with American stick flags in a lambs ear wreath

Next, add some metal stars or something similar to the side of your mirror or art. I used a tiny little nail so there would be a small hole to fill once I take the stars down.

red, white and blue decorations in the entryway with American flag pillow

If you have a bench anywhere in your home toss some United States themed pillows onto the bench. These pillows are from last year but you can find cheap pillows in the dollar spot at Target also.

red, white and blue decorations in the entryway with American flag pillow and flowers

And if you have a sprig of flowers tie a cute red and white ribbon around it and lay it on the bench. Little touches like this make a design go from ordinary to unique.

Now let's take a few steps into my kitchen where I added a couple of simple touches.

Kitchen Decor

There is something special about adding holiday decor to your kitchen area. I have a small sitting room attached to my kitchen.

red, white and blue decorations in the kitchen on the hutch with a pennant banner

If you have a hutch in your home consider adding a pennant banner to the hutch. I have a pennant banner free printable where you can make your own.

red, white and blue decorations pennant banner

It is really easy to make if you have basic sewing skills. You can add this one to your hutch, china cabinet, bookcase, or anywhere. Or you can shop for one like I did this year.

To add more patriotic pride to your hutch decorations try this presidents silhouettes DIY. This is our newest addition. I like coming up with decorations that fit the theme, have a little history behind it but are not the usual idea.

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson were just the ticket. Aren't they cute?!!

presidents silhouettes craft

Now let's head back to the living room which is the last room where I added some patriotic touches.

Living Room Mantle

This year I went all out on the mantle. What I mean is that I decided to make some art to use on the fireplace mantle each year.

red, white and blue decorations on the mantle with a chambrey blue shiplap wood art piece that has liberty wood cutout on it.

Since the mantle is the heart of the home I feel like holiday decorations are not complete until the mantle fits into the design.

red, white and blue decorations on the mantle with a chambray blue shiplap wood art piece that has liberty wood cutout on it.

Keeping things inexpensive I was inspired by this “liberty” wood letter cutout and an old canvas frame I found at Goodwill.

This project is super easy. Using the frame I was able to add a shiplap look, paint it with Fusion mineral paint, and add the “liberty” lettering. And now I have some art for the mantle.

Here is how to make a DIY farmhouse sign if you would like to make one too. But if making a piece is not your thing consider hanging a flag here for your July decorations. It brings a home design together when you include the mantle.

Conclusion

Well, there you have some ideas for red, white and blue decorations for your patriotic holiday. I hope you have been inspired to do some independence day decorating in your home. Or maybe I should say July 4th, flag day, presidents day, labor day, memorial day. Okay, I think you get the picture.

Did you know you can pull out these decorations before memorial day and leave them out all summer long? Yes, you can have a patriotic spirit the whole summer. It is the best time of year to decorate with an Americana theme. Which makes this style of decor even better.

Happy Decorating!

USA flag decoration ideas on the back porch

Last year's patriotic decor ideas included my back porch. Many of these ideas can be added to your back porch from items you have laying around the house.

One of my favorite American flag decorations is stick flags. Either pick up many at the store or order them online because there are so many things you can do with a stick flag. They are also inexpensive and can be placed in fun places like plants. There are so many different ways to decorate with American flag decor!

So for more ideas for your front or back porch and a few other ideas in between check out my 4th of July decorating ideas.

Patriotic Free Printable Banner

If you jumped over to that last post mentioned you may have noticed this pennant banner on the wall. Well, it is a free printable that I created.

American flag decoration ideas on the back porch

It is really easy to make. All you need is a printer, cardstock, binding tape, and sewing machine. Actually, you can glue it instead of sewing it but I sewed mine with a contrasting thread.

American flag decoration ideas on the back porch

The nice thing about this patriotic pennant banner is that you can use it for any time of year. It doesn't have a flag on it so it would be cut in a little boys room too.

So here is the pennant banner template post so you can go grab it and get more detailed directions. If you are looking for more fun patriotic printables try our Etsy shop where we have a whole category on patriotic wall art and prints you can download and print.

4th of July Tablescape

Does anyone else love to invite friends over for fireworks and a BBQ for an independence day celebration? Here is an idea to jazz up your patriotic decorations for a dinner party.

American flag decoration ideas on your dining table

This 4th of July tablescape can be used for any American celebrating holiday. Here is a great example of using vintage items you have around the house.

There are all kinds of goodies on this table that fall under American decoration ideas. I started with this canvas drop cloth runner I made, used my farmhouse vase holder and added some of those lovely stick flags.

American flag decoration ideas in a table centerpiece

But do you notice something different about these flags? This time I added some Betsy Ross flags. This table was inspired by colonial times. So if you get a chance go check out this 4th of July tablescape and see if you find other colonial influences.

I love these Betsy Ross flags so much until I used them on another patriotic centerpiece. Here is a simple idea to bring your celebration onto the back porch.

Patriotic centerpiece with Betsy Ross flags

This vintage patriotic centerpiece is basically layering a red and white plate. Then a vintage pitcher filled with wooden spoons. And last topped off with stick flags. There are more fun ideas on this easy patriotic table setting. And you can use these ideas anywhere from outside to inside.

Patriotic Ideas using Red, White and Blue Decorations

And last is this year's patriotic ideas using red, white, and blue decorations home tour. Here you will find another better way to decorate your front porch, entryway, and more. But this time I added the mantle including a DIY farmhouse sign that you can create too.

American flag decoration ideas on the front porch

If you looked at the first post you will see my front porch there too. There is one item that stayed the same all summer long and that is this memorial wreath which is also a 4th of July wreath and Labor day wreath. LOL! See what I mean. It stays up all summer long.

American flag decoration ideas inside your home.

After the front door, you get more American flag decoration ideas on the inside. There are ideas from the kitchen to the living room.

Patriotic Shiplap Farmhouse Sign

If you have a fireplace don't forget your mantle. The fireplace is the heart of the home and a great place to hang a flag is over the mantle.

DIY farmhouse sign

But in our home instead of a flag, I made a patriotic shiplap farmhouse sign. This DIY farmhouse sign is easy to make and you can paint it as I did, stain it or paint a flag design on it. The possibilities are endless.

Conclusion

Now you are probably wondering why I love decorating for patriotic holidays. Well, first I am so thankful to live in a country of freedom. Many people have worked hard and sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

I also love history and there is loads of history wrapped around our American flag. If you noticed I have another historical flag called a Bennington Flag. Plus the first photo of the giant flag in my entryway I received when my Dad passed. It was flown over the state capital the day he died. Needless to say, it is very special to me.

American flag decoration ideas inside your home.

So, when you are decorating for any of the patriotic holidays think about using some flags you have around the house. Also, go to a dollar store like Dollar Tree and pick up about a dozen stick flags. And last go through all your goodies and see if you have anything that is red, white or blue. Incorporate them into your design.

Before you know it your home will show your American pride.

Bring red, white, and blue to your table with this easy patriotic table setting idea. No matter what patriotic holiday you are celebrating, this vintage antique tablescape is simple to create. I have step-by-step details on how to make this patriotic party table for inside at home. Or on your porch, or outside of your home.

Patriotic Table Setting Idea

Let me guess that you are here looking for a tablescape. And for patriotic table decor ideas to celebrate the United States independence, Memorial day, or Labor Day? If you are looking for something easy to create, then I hope this tablescape will help you.

HOW TO MAKE A PATRIOTIC TABLESCAPE

The best way to start planning any patriotic party is to decide where the table will be located. I picked the porch for this backyard BBQ party. So I moved our wicker furniture outside and brought out the back patio table onto the back porch.

Farmhouse table on back porch for a patriotic party

My son-in-law and I made this table and I have the details on how to build a farmhouse table. So now you have your July party table set let's start decorating the table going step by step.

Patriotic Tables Cloth

First decide if you want a tablecloth, paper or leave the table plain. I used this towel I found in the Target dollar spot last year but here is another similar stripe blanket. Simply toss your table covering over the table making sure the same amount hangs over on each side. Now let's create a patriotic table centerpiece.

Blue and white stripe tablecloth for a patriotic tablescape

Patriotic Centerpiece

This Americana centerpiece is super easy to create. Basically, use a white pitcher and fill it with wooden spoons, rolling pins, or any wood utensils. And then add some American stick flags.

Patriotic centerpiece

First, sit a red and white buffalo check plate in the middle of the table first. I used this Coton Colors plate from my Christmas tree centerpiece tablescape.

Fourth of July centerpiece

Now sit an old or new white or cream pitcher on the plate.

Patriotic centerpiece

And add old or new wooden spoons and small flags like these Betsy Ross flags. Adding an old American flag is the beginning of adding a little history to your table.

Betsy Ross patriotic centerpiece

I like to create tables that have a little story or something special about them. Years ago I created a 4th of July tablescape and used many of the same table decorations. And this table takes us back in time too.

The pitcher is a salt-glazed pitcher from the 1800s. The wooden rolling pin is also from the 1800s. It belonged to my great-grandmother on my Dad's side of the family.

Consider using pieces that are vintage or antiques. You can find pieces in thrift stores or antique shops. Or you can purchase a simple white pitcher and paint blue stripes around it.

Now let's start creating the place settings and again I have a little story to tell.

Independence Day Patriotic Place Setting

Usually, I design a place setting around a little gift for my guests. Since this is an at-home small family backyard BBQ party, I wanted to create a bit of history. But for your table, you don't have to have a story behind your place setting.

Dinner Plate

To begin let's place the dishes on the table. First, put a dinner plates down like this Currier and Ives blue plate. Or you can use a red, blue or white plate.

Patriotic tablescape for a bbq

Napkins and Salad Plate

Then place a white napkin on the dinner plate next. And then top the set with another Currier and Ives salad plate. Or a solid colored plate in red, white, or blue.

4th of July place setting using Currier and Ives blue dishes

George Washington's Birthplace

If you use this Currier and Ives plate you are adding a little history to your table. The design on this plate is George Washington's birthplace. This home on this salad plate is located in Virginia at a National Monument site called George Washington's birthplace. The original home burned down but it has been reconstructed for visitors to site see.

Since we are celebrating America, I thought it would be fun to add this plate. This is my favorite part of the table. The land and house George Washington was born in belonged to my 10th great-grandfather, Henry Brookes. He sold it to George Washington's dad. Later baby Washington was born there.

Do you see the connection to this patriotic decor party idea? George Washington is one of the founding fathers of our country and our first president.

Wooden Silverware

Now let's move on to the silverware. Since this is an upscale backyard BBQ have some fun and add wooden spoons, forks, and knives. The wooden silverware fits in nicely with the July 4th centerpiece.

Red, white and blue tablescape for Patriotic holiday

You can use any kind of silverware but wooden utensils makes the table a little more fun.

Patriotic style place setting

Glasses

Next, add glasses for coke floats. I found these cute Irish coffee mugs with a handle at the Dollar Tree. I love shopping there for glassware. They have many options, and you can order online if you have many guests and need a larger quantity. You can check the dollar store for glassware too. It is a great place to shop.

Independence day table setting with irish coffee mug glasses by Dollar Tree

The style of these glasses fit in nicely with a BBQ vibe and look very nice with the place settings. A mason jar would look cute too.

Patriotic table decorations

Guess what? Your table is finished, so add your chairs unless they are already at the table. It is time to party!!! So fire up your grill. We searched hamburgers, chips, baked beans, and coca-cola floats for dessert. My sweet little nephew and his mom came over to celebrate.

Fun patriotic backyard BBQ

He was so cute! His favorite part was when I made the coke floats in the cute coffee mug. He watched every detail as I put ice cream into the glass and then added the coke. He thought that was cool, but when we asked him if he wanted some, he said no. LOL!

Conclusion

Now that your table is finished, consider adding a few other touches to your party. Grab your patriotic theme decorations and start decorating the room, porch, or patio. I keep a crate full of patriotic décor to decorate for the summer.

Patriotic decorations for a backyard BBQ

Add a flag pillow on the chairs or a banner to the walls. Here is a cute free printable patriotic banner. Simply subscribe to my email to get access to all my free printables. If your party is in the evening hang some string lights. String lights give such a pretty sparkle to the event.

Patriotic dinner party decoration ideas

Add more stick American flags to plants or anything around the room like I did on the plant in the corner. And if you have any large star shape decor add them to your space. Adding extra July decoration pieces will make the space feel more festive.

Here is one last look at the table so you can see all the details.

Today I am sharing some fun decorating ideas for a patriotic picnic summer party. Use this inspiration to plan your picnic party for this 4th of July, Memorial Day, or Labor Day. These ideas are also great for your home backyard bbq, park, or the beach.
Patriotic picnic ideas using layered blankets on the ground, stacking pillows up against baskets.

Picnics are so much fun but this year I decided to share patriotic picnic ideas and to my surprise, I think this was the most memorable and special 4th of July picnic ideas I have ever created. I hope you find these fourth of July party ideas inspire you to create a fun event for friends and family.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

Years ago my girls and I created boho picnic styling inspiration. I had forgotten how much fun a picnic can be until this fourth of July picnic.

Patriotic Picnic Ideas

Let's jump right into the steps on how to create this red, white and blue picnic, and then at the end, I will share one very special detail that might make your patriotic celebrations even more amazing.

Picnic Supplies

Most of what you need for this America's birthday picnic you may have laying around your house. Here is a checklist that will make packing much easier.

Pack everything in the baskets and crate for easy delivery. Now let's talk about setting up your 4th of July celebration picnic.

Layered Picnic Blankets for Patriotic Celebration

Layering anything is trending right now from layered rugs to layered art so why not layer some blankets as we did in these photos.

Patriotic picnic ideas using layered blankets on the ground.

Simply lay one larger blanket down on the ground then lay another blanket on an angle on top of it. I used a white sheet on the bottom but a bleached drop cloth works even better and on the top blue and white stripe small blanket with small blue tassels on the corners. This idea lays the foundation for a patriotic feel.

Picnic Baskets for Fourth of July Party

Now it is time to add a picnic basket to your design. Think out of the box and pack all your goods in baskets and crates.

Patriotic picnic ideas using layered blankets on the ground.

Once you arrive at your location and you unpack all your goodies simply turn your crate over and use it as a table.

Fourth of July picnic ideas using a wooden crate turned upside down to act as a table. Charcuterie board filled with food and a small mason jar filled with oatmeal that has two mini Betsy Ross flags inside.

Then prop pillows against the larger baskets. Use red, white and blue pillows and if you have any pillows with starts or American flags use them too. All these pillows I use for patriotic decorations in my home.

Patriotic picnic ideas using layered blankets on the ground, stacking pillows up against baskets.

Now that you have staged the larger pieces let's add food and accessories.

What food do you bring on a picnic?

There are so many wonderful food ideas for a picnic. Sandwiches wrapped in paper, chips, hot dogs, and hamburgers but my personal favorite is a charcuterie board.

Let me recommend before you leave home to create a charcuterie board. We filled our board to the brim with salami, prosciutto, crackers, several different kinds of cheese like smoked gouda and gruyere, strawberries, blueberries, and grapes.

My nieces made the delectable food board which added so much to the patriotic picnic.

Once you have the board completed wrap it up real good with saran wrap and do not remove the wrap until it is time to eat. This will keep bugs off your food while you are setting up.

Patriotic Decoration Ideas for Picnic

Next, for a simple DIY fourth of July decorations. Bring a mason jar or any jar and fill it with oatmeal, rice, or anything that will hold some small American flags in place. I love history so I thought it would be fun to add some Betsy Ross flags instead of our current flags.

Once you have your flags in place drop in some sparklers for later when the sun starts going down and don't forget to bring a lighter.

Next, toss another cutting board or an old breadboard onto another corner of the picnic blanket as another table. On our breadboard, we placed our drinks.

Izze sparkling sodas used for a patriotic picnic

I mainly picked these Izze sparkling grapefruit drinks because I thought they were cute but to my surprise, they were very tasty and they don't have added sugar which is a bonus.

Add some more red, white, and blue decorations here and there. Different size flags are fun and banners are great too. A star-spangled banner would but very cute. But if you have a flag pillow or one with stars that are the icing on the cake if you know what I mean.

Patriotic picnic ideas using layered blankets on the ground, stacking pillows up against baskets. Decorations of red, white and blue banners, pillows and flags

So now that we have all the decorations planted its time to celebrate and enjoy a day with family and friends.

Time to Celebrate Independence Day

Unwrap your charcuterie board.

Pour drinks or hand out the bottles of soda and plates and napkins.

Patriotic picnic celebration ideas.

And enjoy the day!

Celebrate the fourth of July with a patriotic picnic.

After everyone has eaten you might find they enjoy the pillows for a little rest and relaxation.

Relaxing at a patriotic picnic in Battery park in Charleston South Carolina

What do you do at a picnic?

There are so many fun things to do at a picnic like play Frisbee and other games, fly a kite, people watch, sing songs and a personal favorite take a nap.

Conclusion

So you are probably wondering what made this patriotic picnic extra special. Well, this was a girls weekend with my sister and nieces to Charleston, South Carolina. Since we are all practicing social distancing we thought a patriotic spirit picnic would be fun.

But the extra special part of this picnic is its location. We set up in Battery Park White Point Gardens where we were sandwiched between swoon-worthy old homes and the Atlantic ocean.

This spot was charming! We set up a couple of hours before sundown to take advantage of cooler temperatures. Honestly, it was cooler but still hot but not as hot as midday.

These fourth of July picnic ideas are perfect for any outdoor space like a home picnic or a magical park like the Battery in Charleston. They will make this independence day celebrations so special.

I hope you have been inspired. Grab your blankets, baskets, pillows, and anything that is red, white, and blue, and go celebrate with those you love.

4th of July Tablescape

The 4th of July holiday is one of the easiest and cheapest to add red, white, and blue decorations to your home. Most items you can find in your cupboard, in the Target dollar spot, or at the local dollar store.

This patriotic tablescape is more than just a decorated table it is a little history that comes to life. Since we are celebrating the United States of America independence I thought why not add a few great things that remind us of the year 1776.

So let's jump into the dynamics of this fourth of July party table to see what elements you will need to create a patriotic look for dinner. And you can use these beautiful tablescapes for all our favorite holidays like Labor Day, Presidents Day, Flag day, and Memorial Day.

Table Linens

4th of July tablescape with Betsy Ross flags, drop cloth table runner and babies breath

To begin dressing your red, white, and blue tablescape start with the linens or runner. You can be creative and use anything from scarves to blankets. On this table, I used an easy to sew drop cloth table runner I made last year.

This is an easy sewing project for beginners and it is made for a drop cloth which means it is not expensive to make. It really helps set the foundations for pretty tables.

Now let's add a centerpiece as a focal point.

July Centerpiece

Every USA table needs a patriotic centerpiece and this table has red white and blue theme written all over it.

4th of July tablescape with Betsy Ross flags, drop cloth table runner, currier and ives dishes and babies breath

Add a glass vase or glass bottles in the center or you can make this farmhouse flower vase holder. Then add white flowers like babies breathe and load it up with little flags.

Here I added some current-day tiny flags and small Betsy Ross flags from 1777 which is the original 13 white stars for states. Adding a little history to the table is fun ways to add a little something extra.

4th of July tablescape with Betsy Ross flags

I love these little Betsy Ross flags. They have come in handy for decorating. I used them in another centerpiece on my easy patriotic table setting in 2021.

Place Setting

Next, let's talk about perfect place settings. Think about each table setting as something special for each guest. Unlike the centerpiece which is there for everyone, the place settings are personal.

4th of July tablescape with Betsy Ross flags, drop cloth table runner, currier and ives dishes, goose quill pen and babies breath

Begin by adding a white plate charger or something for the dishes to sit on. I bought these chargers at Dollar Tree. They originally were gold so I used chalk paint and gave them a thin coat of paint.

Next start stacking dishes. You can use anything that is red, white, and blue or white plates. I pulled out my grandmother's blue and white Currier and Ives. Here is another example of bringing back the old days. These old dishes have vintage designs on them to give users a colonial vibe.

Next, add something special for the silverware like these paper envelopes I found in the dollar spot at Target.

4th of July tablescape with Betsy Ross flags, drop cloth table runner, currier and ives dishes and babies breath

Jazz up your decor by alternating white stripes on the utensil envelopes at one seat and star shape pattern at another. And then make a bow and hot glue it to the envelope to give it another extra special touch.

Once you have your envelopes set add your everyday flatware or cute wooden utensils.

4th of July tablescape with Betsy Ross flags, drop cloth table runner, currier and ives dishes, cloth dinner napkins and red and white ribbon and babies breath

Next place a cloth napkins or paper napkins in the center of the plate and then toss in a red and white stripe ribbon which you can nestle under the dessert bowl or if you look in the photo above you can add a blue one to the seat at the end of the table for much fun.

I actually ran out of red and white stripe ribbons and had some navy blue ribbon on hand. Great ideas come whenever you run into a hurtle like running out of something be creative and look for an alternative. 9 times out of 10 when you are pushed to really be creative it turns out to be a happy accident.

Extra Accessories

We are almost finished with this 4th of July tablescape. Let's add a few other accessories to finish the look.

I love to add a few favorite items to the table with a little history.

4th of July tablescape with Betsy Ross flags, drop cloth table runner, currier and ives dishes, cloth dinner napkins and red and white ribbon and babies breath

Since we are talking about celebrating our independence and a colonial vibe how about laying on the table smaller pieces like these goose feather quills.

These quills are from our visit to Historic Colonial Williamsburg. My daughters had an opportunity to write with these just like they did when our founding fathers wrote out the declaration of independence.

These feathers add a light and airy feel to the fourth of July decorations but tell a story or give the guest a conversation starter. It is good to add different heights into your table design. These quills play with the height variations.

Next, add blue and white stripe pillows or seat covers to your chairs or bench. These pillows actually come from my back porch but the color scheme was a perfect way to add color to the seat.

They were the perfect final touch that added another pop of bright colors and are pretty comfy to sit on if your guest would like to.

Another fun idea is to add a patriotic wreath to your front door. If you look back at my pictures above you will see my wreath on my door in the background.

All these extras are an additional cost but see how they make the whole table design.

Guess what? We are finished with our table and almost ready for party guests.

Conclusion

Isn't this a simple, easy, and cheap 4th of July tablescape design? This July tablescape ideas are great for backyard BBQ parties, dress-up dinners, or just for your family.

In fact, I decided to invite some of my family over to eat some cherry dump cake with me. I didn't want this table to go to waste without some fun.

And my sister's cherry dump cake, which I altered to be dairy and gluten-free, is so delicious! I love to share with friends and family. And guess what I am going to share the recipe with you. Wink smile!

My friend Mel at Flours on my Fingers has posted my gluten-free cherry dump cake recipe on her site. The recipe looks so yummy on her site. Go see for yourself this delicious and easy recipe.

Another fun treat to serve is fresh strawberries in your berry bowls. Strawberries are the perfect fourth of July treat.

Brighten your home with these charming patriotic farmhouse tiered tray ideas. “Old Glory” was given its name in 1824 by William Driver. Patriotic Farmhouse Tiered Tray

We're gearing up for the BBQs, fireworks, and celebration of freedom. But first, we want to give you a little inspiration for decorating your farmhouse tiered tray in a patriotic theme.

Pammy & Poppy

Farmhouse Tiered Tray in sports theme

When we reached out to Pam about designing an Old Glory themed tiered tray, she jumped willingly! She was in the midst of leading Vacation Bible School at her church, where the theme was “Game On” and focused on Jesus and sports. When she incorporated a “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” feels to her tray, the American Pride rushed through our veins!

Take a peek at that Stars & Stripes Forever sign! The red, white and blue feels are so lovely in this tray. It's simple, yet beautiful. Some of those red pieces would easily be interchanged and used during Christmas.

Oops I Dunn It Again

Stop what you're doing! Do you see the Rae Dunn on this tray? Those berry baskets are our absolute favorite. (if you find them in your local store, we wouldn't be mad if you bought us a set). Haha!

Decorate a party with a red, white and blue tiered tray

Adding a farmhouse patriotic tier tray as part of a vignette is a great addition to your patriotic decor. Since you can't bring fireworks in your home, choosing an area in a room to add the feeling of fireworks bursting is perfection!

Gingham star sign on a patriotic farmhouse tiered tray

All these song quotes on small wooden signs are getting us so inspired. The lyrics of God Bless America on this farmhouse tiered serving tray strike a cord of pride deep in our hearts. Lemons and daisies add beautiful pops of yellow and the wooden star made of gingham is adorable!!

The rustic feel of this tray, mixed with the freshness of red, white, blue and yellow mini banners has our wheels turning of how to miniaturize our banner and repurpose it. Old Glory is the star on each tier of this tray.

Antiques on a patriotic tiered tray

There are so many sweet vintage throwbacks on this farmhouse tiered tray. When we chatted about vintage scales in a previous post, did you imagine incorporating it into a Patriotic tiered tray? Brandy did and added an antique toy car and surrounded it with croquet balls and so many other great American classics.

This Rae Dunn inspired “AMERICA” sign is a  perfect way to celebrate holidays. Kelly has added faux geraniums to her tray and flowers add just the right pop of color to indoor tiered tray decor. The striped red and white straws also add excitement to this tray. We love that Kelly is always willing to allow us to share her beauties, from our first Holiday Tiered Tray post to our most recent Rae Dunn Tiered Tray posts. It's always fun to see what she's up to each holiday.

Keeping a tiered tray set up in your kitchen year-round as part of the farmhouse decor is simple. You can change out a piece here and there to give it a fresh new look or a few American flags and red, white and blue straws into pieces you already have on your tray. Beth's tray and kitchen are a sophisticated farmhouse.
