What is a European Swedish antique mora clock? What is the history behind mora clocks? And where to purchase an antique or reproduction mora clock? These are the questions I searched the first time I laid eyes on a long case grandfather style mora clock and after years of dreaming of having one I am excited to be adding it to our home.

ANTIQUE MORA CLOCK

Last week we went on a journey across the country to pick up an antique mora clock. We traveled from Florida to Michigan through snow and fields of farmland but I am getting ahead of myself. Let's rewind to where it all began and answer some of the questions you may have about European Swedish antique mora clocks.

What is an antique Mora Clock?

A mora clock is a longcase clock that sits on the floor like a grandfather clock. But a mora clock is unique in that it has a female form shape. With a distinctive carved base and round top, the gentle curves of the unique shape is the hallmark of the Scandavian clock. But in addition to their beautiful design, these Swedish clocks have a history of overcoming obstacles that is beautiful too.

Large wall grandfather style mora clock

The History of Mora Clocks

The antique Swedish mora clock was crafted in the late 1700s through 1850 in the town of Mora. The original Mora clocks were born from necessity during hard times. Because of a drought, the villagers sought out another way to make ends meet and put food on the table. So they learned the art of clock making. What a great example of adapting to changing circumstances.

In some ways, you might say they were the first assembly line business. When a person wanted to purchase a clock they would seek out the clockmaker, painter, woodworker, and so on. Once they chose each person then each piece of the clock would be made and passed on to the next craftsman until it was complete. So the face of the mora clock, clock body and clock works were crafted individually.

The Production of Mora Clocks

The production of mora clocks was individualized. This is why no two mora clocks are alike. The decorative elements may depend on the type of mora clock. Some clocks are called city clocks because of their lovely chinoiserie design while others are called country clocks because of their simplicity. Mora clocks may be decorated in beautiful folk art. Most of the time these clocks were purchased for a bride so many are called bridal clocks. What a wonderful wedding presents!

Generally, a bridal mora clock is simplistic and the original paint color was yellow, orange, green, blue, or white. Because these timepieces were necessary to families they were handed down from one generation to the other. Some ancestors would paint the clock to match their decor which is why many have layers of paint.

One of the features of mora clock faces is what makes it special. The only way you can identify the artist who made the clock is by the initials on the clock's face. My clock has A. A. Ln on it. Wish I knew who that was. The beautiful face of my clock left no other clues.

Mora clock face with A. A. Ln written on it

Around the mid-1800s factory-made clocks started affecting the mora clock industry. So that is why you see the history timeline stop there. But thankfully over 50,000 mora clocks were made during that short time and there are many left in Europe for antique lovers to purchase.

Where to Buy an antique Swedish Mora Clock?

So where do you find these longcase clocks? If you live in America I would look at Etsy and eBay or do a search on Google. There are more mora clock options in the UK but add in the shipping from abroad if you go that approach. A great place to shop in the UK is White and Faded.

I got my clock from them through collaboration with Liz Marie Galvin and The Found Cottage. There are a limited number of mora clocks available. As of February 2022, they have one authentic clock left and are talking about doing this again in years to come.

Where to Buy Reproduction Mora Clocks?

Depending on your price range, a reproduction mora clock may be a good option. You'll also find a huge variety of styles and variety of colors. There are so many beautiful reproduction mora clocks on the internet to purchase. Amazon and Etsy options like this longcase clock and this wall mora clock. Antique Farmhouse has mora clocks too along with many other beautiful clocks.

So now that you know a little about the history and where to purchase one for yourself let's talk about how to decorate with a mora clock and what encouraged us to buy one.

Now back to how our mora clock found its home at Summerhill.

My husband and I have been blessed with antiques that have been handed down from generation to generation. We both love history and old architecture so all these antiques have a happy place in our home.

One day while looking at old vintage decorations on Instagram I saw an antique mora clock. I became curious and wanted to know more. After finding out what it is called I knew it would fit in beautifully in our home decor so I started shopping and found they are not so easy to come by in America.

Next, I searched reproductions and found a few I loved. For years this one reproduction sat in my Amazon wish list but for some reason, I could never click to buy it and no one in the family got it for me for Christmas.

Fast forward to the first of February and I heard through Liz Marie Galvin on Instagram that a shipment of antique mora clocks had arrived in America. So after measuring my car and home I made a purchase and that is where we began this story.

A store in England called White and Faded had been collecting antique mora clocks for over a year and shipped a container to Michigan for Liz to sell in her shop called The Found Cottage. What a treasure of antiques and decorations but the sweetest pieces were the mora clocks.

At this time, March 2022, there is one mora clock still available to purchase but rumor has it that they are considering collecting and shipping more in the future. So keep your eyes open.

Mora Clock

When we brought home our mora clock the first thing I did was give it a good cleaning. I inherited some spider webs and dust so I took my blower and dusted it on the inside.

Cleaning an antique mora clock

While doing that I discovered what looks like the original paint. On the bottom was a light blue-green color. Can you imagine the painter who first painted this? It's like seeing into a window in time.

Original paint of blue green on bottom of mora clock

Next, we took my drafting horse-hair brush and gently removed layers of dust from the clock mechanism. Look at the gears in the clock. The original mechanisms are elegant in their simplicity. Isn't that fascinating!

Removing dust from clock mechanism with a horse hair brush

Once we cleaned and inspected everything it was time to bring it inside. I had three places I considered for the clock but for now, it has found its home between the dining room and living room. I figure at Christmas we will move it to the entryway or by the television. It will be fun to style it in different places during the year.

Placing a longcase clock in our living and dining room

Then we placed it against the wall we gently sat the clock on the top and placed the hood around it.

Adding the hood around a mora clock

But it didn't seem to be standing straight so we took a level and leveled it by placing a piece of wood behind it using double-sided tape. Depending on the age of the mora clock and condition of your mora clock case, you may need to make a few adjustments as well.

Leveling an antique mora clock

Now our mora clock has a home in our farmhouse style house. I almost feel like my interior design was meant for a Swedish clock. I have had many people tell me that my interior design would fit in Sweden. Even a person I met from Sweden at a conference. There may be more Swedish antiques in my future.

Antique mora clock white

Conclusion

After going through this experience you might be asking was it worth it and I am still happy I brought an antique mora clock into my home. The answer is yes. It fits into my decor beautifully giving it character and a vintage farmhouse look. I love my antique clock!

Like Anne of Green Gables, I have always had lots of imagination and antique furniture is filled with imagination. I love how this mora clock has my personal story now as well as its journey to America from White and Faded. But who knows where it began and the first people who inhabited it. I like to think my antique clock has a rich and beautiful history from the village of Mora in the south of Sweden.

Antique mora clcok

That is the fun part of owning a mora clock. There are a variety of mora clocks, both antique and reproduction, that can fit your decor. If you choose to purchase an antique clock and find one in good condition, it will become a statement piece to enjoy for years to come. If you love clocks, check out my 9 Large Wall Clock Decor Ideas to Liven up your Home post and learn more about decorating with clocks.

Now it is your turn. Do you love antiques? Do you know any more history about mora clocks? I would love to know.

Vintage inspired decor is becoming more and more popular but you might be asking what is vintage decorations? Well, they are accessories, furniture and art inspiration from long ago. Basically reproductions of antiques.

Vintage inspired decor

When decorating your home, adding in vintage style decor will give your decorations more character. Blending old and new decorations can make your decor more interesting and less perfectly store-bought. With so many choices available, you can find vintage inspired pieces that work with most decor styles.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

Hitting your local antique shops for vintage treasures can be fun, but shopping for an old antique piece can be challenging which is why vintage decorations are so great. You don't have to wait and wait and wait or browse 100 antique stores to find that old mora clock or piece of art when you can find a vintage inspired piece easily online.

Here is a list of items you can look for when shopping for vintage pieces. Remember, look for vintage design reproduction pieces or anything that looks old but is actually new.

  • Furniture (look for different old styles like wingback chairs or farmhouse bench to name a few)
  • Vintage art (our favorite place to shop is Etsy. There are so many options from printables to upcycled pieces)
  • Pottery (look for anything that has an old finish on it like ironstone, wicker, stoneware)
  • Plants and wreaths (this is probably the easiest category to shop for but stick with varieties of plants people long ago would have had inside their homes. For example dried flowers and herbs are a great choice) Here is a cute vintage DIY using dried flowers.
  • Wooden boards (you cannot go wrong with a bread board, cheese board or butcher block)
  • Vintage style rugs (Rugs that look worn or have an old style pattern on them are perfect to give that vintage aesthetic)

Now that we have a few ideas to look for, let me make your life even simpler. We have pulled together a collection to make your online vintage shopping more fun.

Vintage Inspired Decor

Whenever I decorate I use old, new, expensive boutique and cheap accessories. Mixing vintage items with modern pieces is a simple way to build character in your home decor without spending a fortune. Here is an example from my coffee table where I used this vintage-inspired artificial plant with a homemade teacup candle.

Vintage decorations on a small end table.

This teacup is an antique along with the books. The antique teacup candle is an easy way to give old objects new life. Old books are great for adding warmth and dimension to your decor. But the chamber lamp was thrifted. I am not sure if it is an antique. Thrift store finds and flea markets are fantastic too because they are often one of a kind vintage finds.

So this collection is a combination of retail stores like Target, Etsy, and a new favorite online boutique called Elsie Green. You will love their European vintage online store. So many great choices!

So let's start looking at all the vintage decorations and think about what room would be a perfect fit for your vintage finds. In the end, I will give you more decorating suggestions for you vintage accessories.

Shop all these vintage-style decorations by simply tapping the image below.

There are so many wonderful ways you can decorate with these items. Pillows are great matched with bedding in any bedroom of your home. If you are wondering what makes these pillows vintage, well, it is the texture. Look for fabrics that were used long ago. Linen, cotton, wool, and so on were staples back in the day. The fabric doesn't have to be 100% natural fiber. It simply needs to look like it, giving your bed a vintage furniture look and feel.

Mora clocks are very old and originated in the village of Mora in Sweden. They have a great story behind them but they are hard to come by if you don't live in Europe. Lucky for us there are reproductions so you can create your ideal vintage living room. This mora clock will be a focal point and conversation piece in the main living areas. Read about my journey to finding an antique Mora clock and to hear more about its history. Clocks of all kinds can be wonderful decorations. Check out my post 9 Large Wall Clock Decor Ideas to Liven up your Home.

Vintage mora clock reproduction

The wreath and Anne of Green Gables art piece will look so cute together. I can see them hanging over a fireplace or anywhere in your home you want a vintage flair. Using quotes from vintage classic novels is another great way to create a vintage aesthetic. You could create a gallery wall mixing different styles of vintage wall art to create a vintage feel.

Anne of Green Gables quote vintage art

A while back I gave you Cottagecore decor ideas. Cottagecore decorations create a mood that will take you back in time. The room is filled with vintage period items. It is like a quantum leap when you walk into a room.

Are you starting to visualize all the options?

Last, I have fallen in love with this online store. This is where I recommend splurging a little extra to get that high-end look. Elsie Green has a beautiful shop filled with vintage-inspired antique-style decorations.

Vintage cheese boards

Can you see these gorgeous cheese boards hanging on a hook next to a stove? The beautiful old wood designs have “time gone by” written all over them for that vintage kitchen feel. They have many more boards like breadboards, furniture, and pottery with that beautiful vintage look.

From the living room to the home office, even the laundry room, the possibilities are endless. Vintage home decor is a simple way to let your home reflect your style.

Conclusion

So what do you think of this weeks vintage inspired ideas? Do you have a favorite? I would love to hear your good ideas in the comment below.

Thank you for stopping by for inspiration. Don't forget to go check out my Cottagecore post. It will give you more inspiration on how to decorate with vintage style decor. All these home decorations will fit perfectly into a vintage aesthetic. And if you need help decorating with old decor, then these tips on styling your hutch will be helpful.

Vintage inspired decorations on a hutch

Old hutches are a great place to fill up with thrift, antique, and vintage decor especially if you love collecting. You'd be surprised at the unique pieces you can find at an estate sale and yard sales. Everything on this hutch is old except for that basket in front. It is a reproduction of a french market basket. Did it fool you? Did you think it was old?

This basket looks very pretty in our french country farmhouse bedroom post. This is a surprising way to make your room look french.

See how fun it can be to decorate with new items that look old? Vintage decor ideas let you create a home that's uniquely you. Have fun and I hope you enjoy shopping to add vintage to your own home.

Decorating with wreaths is a great way to add texture to your interior or dress up your front door and porch. Here are ideas to decorate your home all year long with wreaths.

Decorating with wreaths

Adding real or artificial wreaths to your home decor is a simple way to add another element to your accessories. There are so many different styles of wreaths and ways to display them. These decorating with wreaths ideas will make planning your design so much easier and we have ideas from fancy wreaths to dollar store wreath DIYs. Let's explore decorating with wreaths indoors and outdoors.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

DECORATING WITH WREATHS

Before we dive into ideas let's talk about how we are going to break down the different ways to decorate with wreaths. Basically, we are first looking at exterior wreath ideas from every day to holidays and then we will look at places to decorate your interior with wreaths.

Let's begin with your front porch and ideas for your front door.

Decorating with Wreaths on your Front Door

Before we start talking about decorating with wreaths indoors, let's take a look at the front door. Probably the most common place to hang a wreath is on a front door. It is fun to change it out for each holiday or you can use a year-round wreath that won't need changing. Here is an idea of a wreath that can hang on your door all year long.

Decorate your front door with a monogram wreath

A monogram wreath works all year long. Here is probably the first photo I took of my porch and back then I pretty much kept this wreath on the door except to change out for a holiday. Monogram wreaths are perfect for the everyday.

Other wreaths that work great are greenery wreaths like boxwood and lambs ear. They are also great for interior decorating too. Now let's look at holiday and season wreath front door decorating.

Decorating with wreaths on your front door

Another timeless wreath idea is adding a basket wreath with lavender. Lavender can be left out year long because not only does it have a springtime fee but it can easily fit in the fall months too.

Note: the lavender wreath on my door is out of stock but look at this GORGEOUS lavender wreath I found.

You can also think about decorating for Christmas with lavender. Wouldn't it be cute to add mini battery powered lights inside this wreath?

I love this wreath so much until I added it to the best Mother's day gift guide of 2021 and I got this wreath from The Whimsical Door. They are one of my favorite places to get wreaths.

Wreaths Ideas for Fall

Decorate your front door with a wheat wreath for fall

Fall is a great time of year to change out your wreath. Here is a simple and inexpensive fall wreath to make and I have all the directions in this wheat wreath DIY. However, if your not in the mood to make a wreath here is another beautiful wheat wreath.

Fall wreath idea for your front door

Don't let this spring-looking wreath fool you because tucked inside the beautiful flowers are little pumpkins and cotton which subtly makes this happy wreath turn fall. Just like my wheat wreath, all the directions are in this DIY fall bicycle wreath.

Did you notice this wreath is designed on a bicycle wheel? You are in for a treat when you see how easy this wreath is to make too.

Wreath Ideas for Spring

Spring wreath hanging with ribbon

Now let's switch gears to spring and again talk about my friend Debra and her amazing talent and designing wreaths. This peony minimalist wreath is so pretty and it looks great all spring and summer long.

Note: The peony wreath hanging on my door is out of stock but Debra has many more peony wreaths.

There are more front porch ideas in this spring porch decorating ideas article.

SHOP THE POST:

Wreath Front Door Ideas for Holidays

Another fun idea for decorating your front door is pulling down the seasonal wreaths and hanging specific holiday wreaths. Wreaths are perfect for any holiday season. So, let's start with Valentine's day and another easy DIY project.

Wreath Ideas for Valentine's Day

Decorating with wreaths with a Valentine wreath on your front door

In some areas of the world, it is still too snowy and cold to hang a wreath on your front door in February but this wreath can stand the cold but if you don't want to hang it outside trying hanging it on the inside of the front door.

This sweet Dollar Tree wreath was so easy to make and didn't cost very much. Full directions are here on how to make a heart shaped wreath tutorial.

Here are the cutest heart shaped boxwood Valentine wreaths.

Wreath Idea for 4th of July

Exterior wreath decoration for 4th of July

If you live in America then starting from May through September you can leave red, white, and blue patriotic decorations out. In May is Memorial Day, then Independence day in July, and in September we celebrate Labor day so keep all your patriotic decor on your porch including a cute wooden wreath.

This sweet wreath by Coton Color is no longer available but if you have someone who can cut the shape it would be easy to paint one like it or similar. However, Coton Colors has another style of the wreath that I think you will love even more. Now they have interchangeable pieces for different holidays.

Wreath Ideas for Christmas

Front porch wreath idea for Christmas

Now we have to talk about Christmas because if you don't change out your wreath but one time a year this is the time of year I recommend.

Here is another example of The Whimsical Doors‘ beautiful wreath designs. This particular wreath was an idea I had. I asked Debra what she thought and like magic, she sent me this. It is even prettier than I imagined and you can buy one during the Christmas holidays on her Etsy shop called The Whimsical Door.

Decorating with Wreaths Indoors

Now let's talk about different ways you can decorate the interior of your homes with wreaths.

Decorating with wreaths indoors with a small wreath on shutters

Lamb ear wreaths are perfect for decorating your interior. This simple wreath adds a beautiful touch of green to your home. In fact, any greenery wreath whether it is artificial or real makes a great decoration inside your home.

The first place I want to show you is adding a wreath to your window shutters. If you have shutters or window this is a cute way to add texture and style to your room.

Decorating with wreaths on windows

At Christmas time I like to hang these wreaths from our windows with red and white ribbons. It's an easy way to brighten up the living room. I share my secret on how to hang wreaths in windows so you can hang them in your windows too.

Just like many of my wreaths these lambs ear wreaths come from The Whimsical Door.

Decorating with wreaths on mirrors

I have three lambs ear wreaths so when I am not displaying them in my bay window at Christmas I distribute them throughout the house during the year.

One of my favorite places to hang a wreath is on my mirror in the entryway. I simply use a suction cup with a hook on it to hang the wreath. I have a little secret to share. There is actually a crack in my mirror and this wreath hides it. So not only is it functional but it is pretty too.

How to decorate a mirror with a wreath

Gallery walls are another great place to put a wreath. I use my wreath on my mirror but imagine taking one piece of art down and replacing it with a wreath. See how easy it is to decorate with wreaths.

Table centerpiece decorated with a wreath and candle

Your outdoor living spaces are a great place to decorate with wreaths. Another way to decorate with a greenery wreath is to lay it on a table as a centerpiece and place a candle inside of it. For this table on my back patio, I grabbed one of my lamb's ear wreaths and created a simple centerpiece.

One thing to keep in mind. Only use a jar candle if you are going to light it in the middle of a wreath. And make sure it is high enough that the flame doesn't come close to the leaves. I have my candle elevate with a jar lib under it.

Easy wreath decorating ideas with a red, white and blue wreath on a mirror for 4th of July

Here is another example of using a wreath on my mirror. This DIY yarn wreath is so easy to make and I have detailed instructions in my DIY yarn wreath post.

A yarn wreath is a fun way to celebrate any season and to add a pop of color to any room. The cool thing about this yarn wreath is that you can change the colors to make whatever you want. You can pick colors that match your room and it can be a wreath you leave out all year long.

How to decorate your home with real wreaths

Now let's switch gears to real wreaths. A holiday wreath is an easy and beautiful way to get into the spirit. My rosemary wreath is a an easy DIY Christmas wreath. This rosemary wreath was so simple to make. I took cuttings of rosemary and used twine to attach them to a round piece of wire. Then I hung the wreath on the back of my bench with a piece of ribbon just like I do on my front door.

Easy rosemary Christmas Wreath idea

Here is a close-up of the wreath. The live greenery is gorgeous. The rosemary smelled so pretty when guests come in the front door. There are more photos in my Christmas entry that brings holiday cheer article. Instant holiday spirit!

Indoor wreaths home decorating with a wreath on a mirror on a mantle

Another mirror idea is hanging a swag on a mirror on your mantel. I have this piece of greenery in my Christmas box so I simply added it to the mirror and it bought more color to the mantel decorations. I have loads of Christmas mantel ideas you will want to check out.

Paper wreath idea for indoor decorating

And last this wreath idea is not the most traditional wreath idea but I think you are going to love it. We have an Etsy shop where we create lots of beautiful wall art that you can print and this watercolor floral wreath is one of those ideas.

To make this wreath simply go to Life on Summerhill on Etsy and select this wreath. Once you have purchased the wreath it is yours to print as many times as you like.

Next, cut it into a square shape and use decorative scissors to cut a design in the corners. Then punch some little holes in the top in the middle and thread ribbon in the holes and tie a long droopy bow.

Last, attach the wreath printable with double sided tape to your mirror and you are done.

Now that you have ideas on where to put wreaths let's recap on all the places that you can decorate with wreaths.

HOMESCHOOL ROOM IDEAS

Do you have one or more kids staying home this school year? Are you looking for homeschool room ideas or homeschool desk ideas? Does the idea of virtual learning or distance learning have you searching for a designated space to make that work? Let's jump into some DIY homeschool room ideas.

FULL HOMESCHOOL ROOM SET UP

Whether this is your first time creating a homeschool room or if you are a seasoned homeschool mom, we have something for everyone. If you have a whole room to designate for your homeschool area, you are one of the lucky ones. The possibilities are endless with this option, but here's a couple that we love!

NEUTRAL HOMESCHOOL ROOM IDEA

Best homeschool room set up with hanging chair and lots of books on the wall
Hanging chair book nook in homeschool room

If you don't use your formal dining room, you might consider transforming it into your homeschool space as Lauryn Simas did. You can see she has a dining table and chairs as desks to learn at.

Bookshelves are also a great thing to have in your distance learning space. They provide lots of storage for school supplies, art supplies, and school books.

Neutral baskets are great for storing clutter! Using a storage bin helps organize homeschool supplies and makes the room look less cluttered.

Also, who wouldn't love to knock out their reading or study time in a hanging wicker chair?

If you want more great nook areas for your child to curl up with their favorite book, check out these cozy book nook ideas. Isn't this a great example of turning your dining room table into a classroom?

HOMESCHOOL CLASSROOM COMPLETE WITH WORLD MAP

Homeschool classroom complete with world map by The Simple Farmhouse
Classroom-style homeschool room

Laura, from over at The Simple Farmhouse, has a cozy farmhouse classroom set up for homeschooling. A church pew is a sweet place to sit next to your kiddo while they learn and you teach.

Her framed world map adorning the wall, while not necessary for every homeschool set-up, makes for a great teaching tool or just a little decor.

This quiet space has a lot of room and will make a great place for learning.

POPS OF COLOR IN A HOMESCHOOL AREA

Pops of color in a homeschool area by Making Main Street
Bright and cheerful homeschool room

If you're all about color, then you'll love the room Ginny, over at Making Main Street, has designed. Her room is mostly black and white and classic, but it has amazing pops of lime green and teal!

Two simple desks in the center of the room, a couple of cabinets, and some wall decor make up this perfect learning space.

SIMPLE DISTANCE LEARNING SPACE

It's no problem if you don't have an entire room to commit to a distance learning space. There are still great solutions to add to your home and succeed with your private or public school learning!

MINIMALIST DISTANCE LEARNING AREA

Minimalist Distance Learning Area by Harmonie
Homeschool workstation design idea

Harmonie designed this precious area for distance learning. She wrote a blog post on How To Set Up A Distance Learning Space In Your Home.

Isn't this space she designed so cute! It looks like it would fit right into a bedroom, corner of a dining area, or even a living room.

The best ways to create a learning space are a small desk, a little storage, and a little bling. That is all needed for a great learning environment.

HOMESCHOOL LEARNING NICHE

Homeschool Learning Niche by Beach House For Six
Closet converted into a homeschool desk space.

Joey, from Beach House For Six, put together this little homeschool work area in a small space niche in her home office. This idea works great inside a closet too.

She gives some amazing tips that will put your mind at ease on her Instagram post.

One of our favorite tips is allowing your kids to have a say in the decor of this dedicated learning spot. Who doesn't love working in an area they were allowed to put a few favorite things in?

HOMESCHOOL NOOK IDEA

Homeschool Nook Idea by The Little By Little Home
Kitchen area homeschool room

This little nook off the kitchen of Leigh, over at The Little By Little Home, is the perfect small area for homeschooling. Instead of using the kitchen table for learning, she has added a narrow table up against the wall in this niche for school.

This is a great example of using vertical space for storage. Look at the shelves over the desk. She kept the floor space more open and went up with storage space.

The lighting is great flowing through the window and gives the inspiration to get the day's work accomplished.

String Edison lights are also a fun addition that gives the nook a great young vibe, adding a warm glow to the study space.

HOMESCHOOL DESK IDEAS

These homeschool desk ideas are sweet, easy, and won't break the bank.

The perfect place for your child to sit while learning is important. This may shock you, but you don't have to run out and buy a school desk for your kiddo. Wanna see what we're talking about?

A SCHOOL DESK MADE WITH A FILLING CABINET, SAWHORSES, AND WOOD PLANKS

A school desk made with a filling cabinet, sawhorses and wood planks by A Fireman's Wife
Homeschool desk built with a bank of drawers

Jen, from A Fireman's Wife, made a double desk with a couple of sawhorses, a filing cabinet, and a couple of wood planks for the top. You can find a desk like this from Pottery Barn for around nine hundred dollars or simply put one together yourself for under two hundred dollars.

You might also notice that Jen takes the time to decorate her kid's desks during the holidays. This great idea makes learning fun and gets creative juices flowing!

HOMESCHOOL DESKS IN A LIVING AREA

Homeschool Desks In A Living Area by Little Suburban Farmhouse
Living room homeschool room

Another great way to create a dedicated space is by adding desks to your decor. Setting up a homeschool station looks simple when we check out Amanda's over at Little Suburban Farmhouse.

This homeschool mom incorporated the desks into her living area. Teaching from your sofa sounds like a good life.

The desks look like a table cut in half and attached to the wall.

Also, hanging your child's picture above their desk personalizes their space in a sweet way.

BUILT IN DESK FOR HOMESCHOOLING

Built In Desk For Homeschooling by Rock That Vintage

This amazing built-in desk, complete with a touch of shiplap, was designed by the team at Rock That Vintage.

Shelves and drawers are perfect for organizing your virtual learning area.

It's great to continue your farmhouse look into your schooling space.

CONCLUSION

These ideas have made creating a homeschool area easy. Homeschool room ideas can come in all different shapes and sizes. No two are the same. Think through the details when planning your space like a chalkboard. Here are homeschool chalkboard ideas to help with that task. There are loads of ideas, from a chalkboard wall to handheld chalkboards.

You can do this! What are you planning to do for your first decorating project in your homeschool room? Share in the comments. I would love to know.

If you need a clever place to hide your microwave, then you have come to the right place because today I sharing creative hidden microwave ideas. Some are built-in, while others you can DIY in one day.

Hidden Microwaves

A microwave oven is definitely a convenience but they're not exactly attractive. A hidden microwave might pique your interest if it's something you've never considered for your kitchen. We want to show off great places to hide your microwave, like putting your microwave in your pantry or hiding your microwave in a cabinet are two great solutions. Considering having your microwave built into a kitchen island is another perfect place to hide a microwave.

Just having your microwave sitting on your countertop in your kitchen can be a total eye-sore. And if you have a small kitchen, it's a great way to free up counter space. Hiding away your microwave is a great idea! You don't have to only hide your microwave. You can create a whole appliance garage to hide away all of the goodies you have in your kitchen.

HIDDEN MICROWAVE IDEAS

Do you have a microwave in your kitchen? If not, this idea is perfect for other appliances taking up counter space. Hidden microwaves can still be used, just no longer an eyesore.

MICROWAVE BUILT INTO A KITCHEN ISLAND

Microwave built into a kitchen island by Tim Lloyd Construction

If you're in the process of having a new house built or considering having an island added to your kitchen, consider having your microwave built into your island. Built-in appliances like this microwave is a good design option and gives you easy access.

This beauty was part of an installation done by Tim Lloyd Construction Co.

Microwaves are still part of almost every kitchen, but they don't have to be the centerpiece of the room. Countertop microwaves can get a built-in look in a microwave cabinet. It can be the best option to give you easy access without keeping it in plain sight.

You see as I went through each book reading page by page I realized that a beginner could easily take the advice between the pages and make their home wonderful.

So here are my top recommended interior decorating books. Each one has its own unique twist and they all have amazing photos of beautiful homes. I hope this list equips you with what you need to select the right book for your interior decorating situation. Or it might help you find the right book to give as a housewarming gift, wedding present, birthday gift, or that perfect coffee table centerpiece.

Whatever the purpose of your search for the best interior design book. I hope these reviews will help you decide.

Feels Like Home by Marion Parsons

Truly a treasure of a home decor book. Not only teaches good design but she takes it one step further and gives direction on how to make it “feel like home.”

Feels like Home decorating book by Marion Parsons better known as Miss Mustard Seed

There are so many things I am excited to share about Miss Mustard Seed's Feels Like Home book. In addition to being spot on with her design advice, there are many gorgeous photos of the vintage farmhouse-style designs. I also love that her book is coffee table-worthy.

Feels like Home home decor book by Marion Parsons

The quality, texture, and colors in her book are spectacular and once you finish reading the book, it will be perfect to use in your home decor. Last, I highly recommend this book as a gift as well. Add it to your mother's day, bridal, wedding, and housewarming gift ideas.

Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon

What a fun book!

Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon, gardenias, tea cup and plate and rose colored gardenia petals sprinkled throughout the flatlay. The perfect best interior design book for beginners.

If you grew up in the south then you will love this book! It is deeply rooted in southern tradition and charm.

Whiskey in a Teacup is about hospitality and making a home. There are loads of fabulous recipes and even more ideas for dinner parties and so on.

Inside of the book Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon along with a floral china teacup filled with warm coffee and rose colored gardenia flowers and petal sprinkled all around the book. This is easy one of the best interior design books for beginners.

I don't want to say anymore because I do not want to spoil the fun! But I list this as one of the best interior design books for beginners because it goes beyond home decor and into hospitality, recipes and more.

Well, one might say it is a well-rounded book. It gives a beginner a little of everything in a good old southern fashion way.

Whiskey in a Teacup would make a great hospitality gift, Christmas or a birthday gift.

Heart and Home by Victoria Duerstock

This beautiful book is filled with home decorating tips and daily devotions tied together.

Heart and Home is one of the best interior design books for beginners. This home decor book and devotional has flowers on the cover and it is sitting with an old insulator, chalk painted books and greenery.

Heart and Home will feed your soul and help you create a warm and inviting home to all who enter.

Each page is threaded with gorgeous pictures of homes from Instagram accounts who have a love for decorating and meaningful devotions to draw you closer to the Lord.

Inside of the book of Heart and Home by Victoria Duerstock. A favorite best interior design book for beginners.

I was overjoyed to find many Instagram friends home inside. It ‘s what made this book even more special. Heart and Home would be a great gift for anyone from a friend to a sister.

City Farmhouse Style by Kim Leggett

If you are a lover of antiques or anything vintage then you will adore this book. Each page is beautifully written and adorned with photos of old and new homes filled with vintage and antiques.

City Farmhouse Style by Kim Leggett. This wonderful book filled with antique decorating advice. Truly one of the best interior design book for beginners.

Antiques have a way of making an ordinary house feel so cozy and special. Kim's book really brings out this beauty!

This book is one of the best interior design books for beginners because it shares the beauty of decorating with anything old whether it is an antique or not.

City Farmhouse Style by Kim Leggett. This wonderful book filled with antique decorating advice. Truly one of the best interior design book for beginners

City Farmhouse Style would be a great gift for Christmas and would be fun paired with a small antique item.

Update: Kim has done it again and this time she takes her readers even deeper into the world of decorating with antiques. You will be inspired by her book called Home Stories.

Home Stories interior design and antique book by Kim Leggett

She shares the beautiful stories behind her vintage antique pieces along with tales behind her friend's furniture and decor too. I have a feeling after you read her book you will fall in love with antiques if you haven't already.

The Inspired Room by Melissa Michaels

I have so many positive things to say about The Inspired Room. It has a lovely cover which will make it a great coffee table book and breaks down room by room.

The Inspired Room by Melissa Michaels. A beautiful coffee table book with dried lavender. One of the best interior design books for beginners.

There are many great design elements in this book. It teaches good design skills in a simple way that you can carry throughout your life.

Loads of creative decorating techniques and thinking outside of the box.

Inside of The Inspired Room by Melissa Michaels. Dried lavender sitting on the corner of this best interior design book for beginners.

Add The Inspired Room to your collection or give it as a gift.

Cozy Minimalist Home by Myquillyn Smith

My first impression is minimalist plus cozy equals this book. Hence the name Cozy Minimalist Home.

Cozy Minimalist Home by Myquillyn Smith. One of the best interior design books for beginners. A warm cup of coffee filled with cream and a bowl of cookies.

But to my surprise, this book goes much deeper than you think. The author helps you think about changing your lifestyle to live in a home that serves you more than you become a prisoner to stuff.

And then between the lines of each page Myquillyn walks you through making your own home a freeing space.

I think this would make a wonderful gift to anyone who is wanting more than just decorating. A desire to scale down and make some home-style changes. Cozy Minimalist Home is the perfect ticket.

A Touch of Farmhouse Charm by Liz Fourez

Did I mention that all these books on this list were recommended by people on Instagram? Yes, I asked on one of my Instagram posts for some recommendations and Liz's book was on the list.

A Touch of Farmhouse Charm by Liz Fourez. An easy DIY project book with warm and rustic feeling rooms. One of the best interior design books for beginners.

But let me tell you how surprised I was when I opened A Touch of Farmhouse Charm. I was expecting to read another book on decorating with many beautiful photos but this book is a DIY project book.

I absolutely loved it! Each project is perfect for any farmhouse style lover!

Liz's home, which is featured in the book, is so pretty. I was so inspired by all the projects, which seem doable to anyone from beginner to intermediate, that I wish I had more time to do one to share with you all.

Inside A Touch of Farmhouse Charm by Liz Fourez. DIY page on how to make a family name sign.

The book is organized and laid out nicely which is why I considered it one of the best interior design books for beginners.

So, if you know a DIY lover then A Touch of Farmhouse Charm is perfect for a Christmas or anytime gift.

Cozy White Cottage by Liz Marie Galvan

While at the Country Living Fair my daughter and I came across Cozy White Cottage and fell in love!

Out of all the books I personally read and reviewed I was unable to review this one in time. However, my sweet Instagram friend Heather, Farmhouse for 8, just finished the book and graciously shared a photo and a review.

This is what Heather had to say about Cozy White Cottage.

“From what I have read so far I have liked Cozy White Cottage. It gives very simple and achievable ideas that anyone can apply in their home to give it those cozy welcoming vibes! It's filled with great photos and it's a quick go-to spot for creating those feels everywhere in your home.”

It sounds like Liz's book is a treasure to anyone who opens the pages. I believe this book would be a great gift. In fact, my daughter doesn't know it but she is getting a copy for Christmas. LOL!

PS: Don't tell my daughter. 😉

The DIY Home Planner by KariAnne Wood

Have you ever heard the saying “I saved the best for last.” Well, there is a special reason why I choose The DIY Home Planner to be last on the list.

The DIY Home Planner by KariAnne Wood and a magnolia flower. One of the best interior design books for beginners.

When you are decorating your home having a planner is a very good tool. So if you pick one or more of the other books then consider this one too.

The DIY Home Planner caught my eye some time ago when I was visiting a Kirkland's store. It is more than your average home decor book. It is a guide and assistant to your home decor planning.

KariAnne has a way with words. You will find her writing easy to read and pleasant as she reminds you that you are amazing and can do anything you set your mind too.

Inside of The DIY Home Planner by KariAnne Wood.

I think this book is the perfect gift for a newlywed couple, a home buyer, Christmas or birthday gift. What a great gift for your daughter or son when they move into their first home.

Conclusion

Well, I started this quest for the best interior design books for beginners on October 26 when I met Kim, City Farmhouse Style, at the Country Living Fair in Atlanta. While talking to Kim we came up with the idea to write a post reviewing some great home decor books and she sent me home with her book.

I started reading it right away while I was traveling and found it to be such a joy to read. I got really excited to read more and that is when I went to my Instagram community for recommendations. They didn't let me down with all the ones I reviewed plus some more.

7 best interior design books for beginners. Heart and Home, A Touch of Farmhouse Charm, The DIY Home Planner, Whiskey in a Teacup, Cozy Minimalist Home, City Farmhosue Style, The Inspired Room.

Here are the other books they recommended and I hope to include them soon.

See how many books were recommended and many were recommended over and over. And many people shared that they are lovers of home decor magazines.

If you are more fond of decorating magazines I have a post featuring the 10 favorite home decor magazines. Curious if your favorite is on the list.

Well, I have to say overall all the books I reviewed were easy, fun, and pleasant to read. Plus loads of inspiration. I hope this post has been helpful and I cannot wait to hear if you gave one as a gift or added one to your Santa list.

Happy Decorating!

So let's get started talking about all the different ways you can do a brick fireplace makeover.

Simple German Schmear Makeover

Fireplace Makeovers by Our Cozy Little Mn. Home with a simple German schmear makeover

Libby and her husband, over at Our Cozy Little MN. Home, took on this fireplace makeover and the finished product is amazing! They did a German schmear effect taking a white mortar and simply smeared it onto the bricks.

This project took them about four hours and if you hop over to her Instagram page you can see the process in her highlights.

Joint Compound German Smear Transformation

This is a 1905 Victorian home that is getting a makeover by Katherine, at Design Central Project. Using a joint compound is another way to accomplish a German schmear look. Fireplaces aren't the only place you can apply this technique.

Another fun fact about Katherine's fireplace is that their mantle is made from an old beam they found in the crawl space of their home. They just used some polyurethane varnish to give it a finished look.

A DIY German Schmear

Fireplace Makeovers by Mrs DIY with a diy German schmear

Mrs DIY shares how she transformed her fireplace with mortar in her Instagram highlight. She started smearing the grout lines with a thick layer of mortar and then brushed over the bricks with the excess mortar.

The way the brick still peeks through is what completes this look.

Faux German Schmear

Fireplace Makeovers by Grace Oaks Designs with a faux German schmear makeover

Hillary, over at Grace Oaks Designs, created a faux German schmear look to cover her fireplace. We don't want to give away how she pulled off this look, but it starts with brick paneling and joint compound. You don't want to miss the before and after on this fireplace!

If you love Hillary's mantle, you want to know that she bleached it recently to get it to look this way and it's beautiful.

A Taupe and White Painted Fireplace

Fireplace Makeovers by Decorate And More With Tip with a taupe and white painted fireplace

While we were on the hunt for fireplace makeovers, we came across Terrie's, over at Decorate And More With Tip. She painted her's with taupe paint and then took sponges shaped like a brick and sponged on white paint on random bricks.

Terrie shares details on her blog with how she specifically created this look and it's a simple, but impactful makeover.

A Fireplace Makeover With Shiplap

Fireplace Makeovers by The Coastal Oak with a shiplap fireplace makeover

Amy, at The Coastal Oak, took the bare wall where her fireplace was and transformed it by adding shiplap. The look is something that Chip and Joanna Gaines would create. Those of you that are good with wood will want to check this makeover out for sure.

We recently painted a dark brick fireplace. If you'd like to see the transformation and learn how then check out our post How To Paint Fireplace Bricks.

Whitewashed Fireplace

Fireplace Makeovers by Redesigned Space with a whitewashed fireplace

Whitewashing brick is when you take a 50/50 solution of water and paint and then paint over the brick. That's exactly how Cindy, over at Redesigned Space, created this gorgeous fireplace.

It's the absolutely perfect look for a farmhouse.

Chalk Paint Makeover On A Fireplace

Fireplace Makeovers by DIY Beautify with a chalk paint makeover on a fireplace

Cindy wrote a blog post over on her blog DIY Beautify all about how she created this fireplace makeover. She took chalk paint and used a dry/wet method of painting.

The finished look is something straight out of a magazine.

Graphite Chalk Painted Fireplace

Fireplace Makeovers by Galvanized Farmhouse with a graphite chalk painted fireplace

If you'd like to bring some color into your home, consider what Melisa, over at Galvanized Farmhouse, did with her fireplace. She took Annie Sloan's Graphite Chalk Paint and gave her fireplace a whole new look. This is a fun way of using chalk paint to makeover an otherwise boring piece.
