Recently I converted our hall closet into a beautiful pantry with the help of Home Depot and BEHR® Paint, and after so many people asked how I did this, I thought it was time to write a post. So here is how to turn a closet into a pantry.

How to turn a closet into a pantry

Many years ago, our old coat closet was a mess. And my small kitchen pantry was always full to the brim with groceries. So one day, I got the idea to make my hall closet into our kitchen pantry. While not every home comes with a walk-in pantry, you'd be surprised what a difference this second pantry can make.

But years later, I found this large hall pantry closet to be an eye sore with scuffed-up walls, and the doors stayed open all the time. When Home Depot and BEHR® Paint reached out to do a project together, I thought this hard-working pantry was the perfect project. It needs fresh paint that can handle wear and tear and a beautiful pantry design without any doors.

So here is my secret on how to turn a closet into a pantry space the easy way, where it is functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing.

How To Turn a Closet Into A Pantry

1. Closet turned to Pantry Design Plan

Before tearing everything out of the pantry, the first thing I do was create a design plan. Don't overlook this important step. As a designer, I know creating a design plan or mood board is worth the time to get a great look. You can create your plan digitally or cut and paste magazine pages onto a poster or foam board.

2. Shopping List for Closet Pantry

Once I had a design board planned, I started selecting items from the Home Depot's website or app for the project. This is a great place to create your shopping list for in-store shopping and online.

Project Tips:

  • Design Plan or Mood Board: Canva or PicMonkey are great tools when digitally creating a design plan or mood board, but another fun idea is cutting ideas out of a home decor magazine. Simply cut and glue them to the board. Here are my top 10 home decor magazines and my Pinterest, which is another great place to curate ideas.
  • Shopping list: create your supply list on the Home Depot website or app. Home Depot carries just about everything from paint to furniture to linens. When planning what you need at the store and online add each piece to your cart. This way your list is tidy in one place.
  • Shopping at the store: When you get to the store, you can easily click on the item to see what aisle to find it and after you check out, anything they didn't have; you can order when you get home.
  • Shopping online for paint: Did you know you can select your BEHR® Paint online and have it shipped to your door? If you plan ahead this will save you so much time because your paint will arrive in the mail. Consider purchasing other supplies like paintbrushes and trays at the same time.
  • Shopping in the paint store: Here is a little secret I have only shared with my subscribers in my newsletter. Add the paint to your Home Depot cart on the app when you decide on your paint color. Order the paint on the app for car delivery at the store. You will save yourself so much time and frustration from waiting in line at the paint counter.
  • Best paint sheen: For your pantry, I recommend a satin or semi-gloss finish in the BEHR DYNASTY® Interior Paint. My pantry has been finished for months in satin and performs beautifully.

3. Demo Closet

Next, remove everything from the inside of the closet. Here is what our pantry closet looked like before.

Closet before converted to butlers pantry

This is a great time to purge anything you haven't used in years or items past their expiration date. After you have removed everything, it is time to tear out everything and bring it down to bare walls.

I removed all the wood strips holding the old shelves in my closet except for the bottom two. You will see why soon.

Your can leave the existing door frame.

4. Repair the Sheetrock Walls

Next, repair any holes on the walls, except where the beadboard will go, with spackle. After the spackle has dried, sand it smooth.

5. Install Countertop Shelf

If you plan to make your pantry into a butler's pantry with a countertop, go ahead and cut a piece of wood and set it on the wood strips attached to the wall.

Next, use a 1 x 2″ and nail it to the front to give the countertop thickness and a lip underneath for a curtain rod to hide behind.

6. Install Beadboard

If you are planning to add decorative wood to the walls, this is when you will do that. We installed a beadboard on the back wall only. Measure each wall and cut your wood to fit. I attached my beadboard with my Ryobi brad nailer.

7. Install Brackets

Once your beadboard is in place, measure where you want your shelves to go above the countertop. I added more height between the countertop and the first shelf because I plan to install a copper rod to dry herbs, so I needed extra space.

Measuring for brackets for pantry shelves

Mark where you want your brackets to go, and now let's drill holes in the side of your brackets. This will help us attach them securely where they sit on the wall. Only do this for the brackets that are in the corners.

Drilling a hole into a bracket for a shelf

Now screw the bracket onto the walls, drill another hole at the bottom, and screw in the bracket on the bottom.

8. Install Shelves

Next, measure between the brackets for a 1 x 3 piece of wood.

Measure between the brackets

Cut the wood to fit and install with a brad nailer where the top of the wood is in line with the top of the bracket.

Installing support wood for pantry shelves

Add another piece of wood at the top of the wall against the ceiling to finish the beadboard. Next, cut the wood for the shelves, set it on the brackets, and support the wood in the back.

After your shelves are in place, cut screen trim and nail to the front of the wood to finish the edge.

9. Spackle and Paint Pantry with BEHR DYNASTY® Interior Paint

Can you start to see how all this is coming together? Next, spackle all the holes and caulk anything that is needed. Once all the spackle and caulk are dry, sand it smooth where needed.

Now it is time to start painting. First, pull the shelves out for easy painting. Paint the walls and the shelves. I painted the shelves on my table that I covered with a drop cloth, and while they were drying, I painted the walls inside the pantry. Here are the steps to painting the shelves.

Sanding wood shelves for closet pantry

First, I sanded the shelves smoothly with a fine-grit sandpaper. Then I removed any dust with a damp paper towel.

Next, I applied BEHR DYNASTY® Interior Paint in color, Gratifying Gray (DC-008). This paint is fantastic! I used it on my board and batten fireplace surround, and it has held up beautifully.

Painting shelves for closet pantry

BEHR DYNASTY® Interior Paint is durable and perfect for a hard-working pantry where metal cans will be drug across it. This paint is stain-repellent, scuff-resistant, and fast drying. That is the recipe for the perfect paint for a pantry. Plus, all I needed was one coat of paint. BEHR DYNASTY® is a perfect paint.

While the shelves are drying, paint the walls inside your pantry. I painted the back wall and brackets Gratifying Gray (DC-008) and the side walls Blank Canvas (DC-003).

These paint colors are a part of the Designer Collection. BEHR® Paint developed a palette of paint colors based on the most used colors by interior designs. This is an excellent list of colors to choose from when picking interior and exterior colors for your home.

Once your shelves and walls are finished being painted, install your shelves. At this point, let the paint cure for a day before putting anything on the shelves. This is a good time to add something special to your pantry. So in the meantime, here is how to make a homemade herb rack here is how I did that too.

How to Make a Homemade Herb Drying Rack

About a year ago, my hubby planted an herb garden outside. Not all herbs last through the winter, so I needed a drying rack to store herbs. Our pantry is a great place to dry herbs because it is not exposed to the sun and is a well-ventilated area. Here are the simple steps to make a homemade herb drying rack with copper. It soon became one of my favorite things about my new pantry.

How to make a copper herb drying rack
  • Measure and cut copper pipe (I measured 1/3″ of the width of our pantry and used a reciprocating saw with metal cutting blade)
  • Spray paint curtain rod brackets to match the rod (I used Behr spray paint color, Antique Copper)
  • Screw the brackets into the wall leaving 1/2″ of rod hanging off on each side
  • Screw the bracket screws into the copper pipe to make it snug
  • Tie herbs to the rod upside down with twine, or you can purchase s-hooks and spray paint them too

10. Pantry Organizing

Now that your paint is dry, it is time to add your groceries. When I shared this completed pantry on Instagram, several people asked where all my groceries were. LOL! When I am finished, you will see how clever they are hidden.

Let's start from the bottom up, and I will share where I stored all our pantry items.

On the floor below the shelf, I installed large oversized baskets that I already had on hand. In these baskets are more oversized or bulk items. You could also use this space for small appliances you don't use often. Here is what we have in our baskets:

  • brown paper bags for recycling
  • plastic grocery bags to line smaller trash cans
  • Cat food that comes in large bags
  • Disposable cooking trays
  • Lunch boxes

Next, let's store all your not-so-pretty food items below the countertop on the bottom shelf. These are all the groceries you use weekly.

  • Cans neatly stacked in rows, and bottles lined up on the left
  • Dry goods are stored in Oxo air-tight storage containers on the Home Depots' website on the right.
  • Cookie jar in the middle to store small items or your individually wrapped favorite snacks like peanut butter crackers.
Pretty pantry storage

On the countertop are all the baskets for vegetables and fruits that last longer without refrigeration and the perfect place for a basket for linen kitchen towels. When we closed in our refrigerator, I lost where my basket was being stored. So I rolled the towels neatly and stored them in the basket on the counter.

Pantry basket ideas of wicker and wire baskets

The next shelf up is cookbooks and old-fashioned jars to hold cereal, sugar, and oatmeal.

Old fashioned jars to store sugar and flour

The cookbooks are on the left, and the jars are on the right.

Add Decorative Touches

I added this wall decoration in the middle. I found this piece at an antique store, but I have many designs similar to it in my Etsy shop that are printable you can decoupage to canvas. This is a great way to personalize your pantry.

Farmhouse style printable art for pantry

On a side note, after living with this arrangement, I moved the glass jars down to the countertop because they are easier to use in this location. Now the copper baskets are up higher next to the cookbooks. The important thing is to make sure it's a functional pantry for you and your family's needs.

On the top shelf of the pantry are three large wicker baskets. These are not as big as the baskets on the floor but are perfect for a little extra storage space. They are about 12 x 12. In these baskets, I stored items I use on occasion, like cookie cutters and cake decorating supplies.

Organizing a pantry with wicker baskets, wire baskets, glass jars and hidden storage

11. Pantry Curtain

Now that all your groceries are stocked in your new pantry, you will need to add our curtain. Home Depot has you covered here too.

Simply install a spring curtain rod behind the lip of the countertop. Then drape a table cloth over the rod where the front of the fabric is off the floor 1/4″. To keep your rod in place, sew a rod pocket at the top by hand or on a sewing machine.

Under countertop curtain hack

Well, guess what? This pantry project is all finished. You now have plenty of room for all your family's kitchen supply needs.

Final Thoughts

After completing the pantry, I was so happy with how it turned out that I decided not to put the closet doors back on. The best part is that it makes us all keep it tidy even more and provides easy access to anything we need.

Also, I didn't plan it this way, but it looks like a butler's pantry you find in old homes. I have always wanted a butler's pantry, and now I have one. I love how this pantry turned out. This will also be a great place to serve drinks or desserts when we have family or friends over for dinner or brunch.

You might be thinking this is not enough food storage for your family. But even a small closet turned food pantry can provide quite a bit of space. In my kitchen, I am organized by zones. There are more details in my kitchen zone organizing post, but basically, you will discover a more efficient way to cook using this method and other places grocery items are stored. Even a tiny kitchen will feel bigger and more organized with my method.

Closet turned into butlers pantry

This was easily one of my most satisfying DIY projects and the perfect solution for us. It could be a great solution for your family's kitchen. Here is a photo of the complete closet converted into a pantry or, maybe I should say, a butler's pantry. What do you think? Should I call it a fancy vintage pantry or a butlers pantry?

Happy Decorating!

The holidays are quickly approaching and hanging wreaths are a popular way to decorate. Today I am sharing how to hang a wreath on brick. You can use this technique for exterior or interior brick.

How to hang a wreath on brick

Recently, while visiting family in North Carolina I was researching how to hang exterior Christmas wreaths on brick. Wreaths are beautiful holiday decor but brick can be a difficult material to work with.

While searching for different ideas, my nephew offered to show me his technique which is sturdy and holds up very well to wind and other harsh weather. This is a great way to hang your wreath and I couldn't wait to share.

For many years I hung wreaths and art on brick walls with a steel case nail. This wasn't the most sturdy way to hang anything on brick but it worked well.

I've always kept an eye out for different ways that could be better. After seeing my nephew's technique while hanging this beautiful wreath, I will be doing this in the future.

However, during my research, I also came across this brick clamp and if you have enough brick for it to clamp, too, then, this might be an even better idea, especially for interior brick. But for now, here is how to hang a wreath on a brick wall, fireplace, outside and inside.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

How to Hang a Wreath on Brick

You may want to rush to put out your Christmas decorations but, first things first, you want to start with the right tools. When it comes to brick, command hooks and adhesive strips just won't do. For this project, you don't need many tools but you want the right ones.

    Supplies and Tools You'll Need

Now that you have all your tools ready, here is how to hang a wreath on a brick wall with step-by-step instructions.

    1. Measure and Mark on Mortar

Before you start, you want to find just the right place for your wreath. You don't want to drill a lot of times in the face of the brick. You may consider marking the place you choose with a piece of chalk so you don't forget.

How to hang a wreath on brick

    2. Drill a Hole in Mortar

Once you've identified the best place for your wreath, you're going to start with your masonry bit and you want to be sure to drill into the mortar, not the brick. Be sure you pick the right size drill bit which should be the same size as your wall anchor.

How to hang a wreath on brick

    3. Hammer Anchor Into Hole

Next, hammer the anchor into the hole. Your anchor should be snug and grip the mortar that is around it. If the anchor will not go in the hole drill into the hole moving it around to make the hole a little larger.

How to hang a wreath on brick

    4. Drill in the Screw

Then, you'll drill your screw into the anchor but do not drill it in all the way.

How to hang a wreath on brick

Leave it out about half an inch.

How to hang a wreath on brick

    5. Attach Zip Tie to Wreath

Loop your zip tie through the wire on the back of the top of the wreath. It's a good idea to leave it a little bit loose so you have a loop to hang the wreath from.

How to hang a wreath on brick

    6. Hang Wreath on Brick Wall (Let's Hang Our Wreath)

Hang the wreath from the screw using the zip tie and then tighten the zip tie the rest of the way to secure it.

In strong winds, this is your best bet to protect your wreath from getting carried away. This should help keep your wreath in good condition, as well.

How to hang a wreath on brick

Cut any excess zip tie that is showing from the front.

Fluff up your wreath, and you're done! It's that easy. Isn't this a gorgeous wreath?

How to hang a wreath on brick

How Do I Hang a Wreath on Brick Without Drilling?

A wreath clamp for brick is a good option as an alternative to drilling into the mortar. Brick clips are a good choice and will work for outdoor use or indoor use. These heavy duty clamps can hold up to 25 pounds making them perfect for a heavy wreath.

Additionally, you can use more than one if the decor you're hanging exceeds the weight limit. This may be your best solution, but if your mortar is flush with your brick, this device won't work for you.

    Final Thoughts

What did you think of this DIY project? Pretty easy, right? I hope it's helpful to hang your wreaths this holiday season and for any seasonal wreaths you have throughout the year. After all, decorative wreaths are great for all seasons.

If you don't have brick to hang your wreath from, I have a few different methods for sharing your holiday joy. You should check out my instructions on how to hang a wreath on a window or how to hang a wreath with ribbon on your front door. I'll give you a hint, it's not your typical door hanger!

I'd love to hear how your wreath hanging goes and if you have any other tips and tricks to share.

    Happy Decorating!

I love the look of wallpaper but I vowed to never hang it again until I learned how to install peel and stick wallpaper while working on a microwave pantry project in my kitchen.

So after I came across this wonderful invention I knew I had to share with all of you along with step by step instructions.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

How to Install Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Regular wallpaper is a nightmare to take down. Trust me the last time I helped a friend remove wallpaper, in a tiny hall and the wallpaper was on the top half of a chair rail, it took us two days.

I wrote a post about it called how to remove wallpaper with a steamer because without my trick it might have taken a week. This project reminded me why I stopped hanging wallpaper in my home until now.

    Peelable Wallpaper

Let me introduce you to the best invention in home decor since paint you didn't have to mix. Welcome peelable wallpaper! Are you getting excited?

How to apply peel and stick wallpaper on an accent wall with a shiplap wall covering.

Some people call it wallpaper sticker, repositionable wallpaper, self-stick wallpaper, easy wallpaper and peel off wallpaper to name a few.

What is Peel and Stick Wallpaper?

Well, I am glad you asked. Basically, it is wallpaper just like the old wallpaper we know but peelable wallpaper comes with self-adhesive backing. It is just like a sticker where you peel off the paper on the back but sticky wallpaper is a backing that is forgiving.

This wallpaper can be removed to reposition, moved to another wall, or even moved to another home. It is great for anyone who is living in a rental, college dorm, or anywhere.

You can use peelable wallpaper on walls in any room, furniture, and sometimes floors like bathrooms, and laundry rooms. It all depends on the durability of the sticky paper.

So now that you know what peel and stick wallpaper is let's talk about how to figure out the amount of wallpaper you will need.

    How Much Wallpaper to Purchase?

I have an easy trick to figuring out how much wallpaper you will need to do your job. I simply go to Home Depots wallpaper calculator and input my information.

See how simple it is to figure out how much wallpaper you will need? LOL!

So now that you have your wallpaper quantity figured let's see how to hang peelable wallpaper.

    How to Hang Peelable Wallpaper

Like with all projects I recommend gathering your supplies first. Here is a list of what I used to add sticky wallpaper to a five-foot by ten-foot wall above a chair rail.

If your wall has never been painted and it is raw sheetrock make sure to paint it with primer and then paint. Do not use flat paint. Eggshell or satin is better for the sticky adhesive to be removed in the future.

If you have any holes from picture hanging nails or any small holes you will not have to fill them but if the hole is larger than a nail then I would recommend you spackle it, then sand it smooth and paint if painting is on your list to do.

Let your paint dry 24 hours before hanging the wallpaper.

If your wall is already painted but it has a sheetrock texture to it then I recommend using a sander to remove any bumps on the wall. Once you have finished sanding go over the wall with a lightly damp paper towel to remove the sheetrock dust.

    Measure the Wall

Next measure the height of the wall where you want the wallpaper to hang. My wall was 63 inches but I added an extra inch for grace. This allows me a little extra on the top and bottom just in case.

How to hang peel and stick wallpaper first by measuring the wall.

    How to Cut Wallpaper

Now lay your wallpaper on a flat surface like a table or the floor. Pull your tape measure out and lay it beside the wallpaper making sure to line up the end of the tape measure with the top of the wallpaper.

Next, make a mark on the wallpaper at your designated measurement. Then move the tape measure to the other side and repeat the step by making another mark. Then connect the marks with a pencil and ruler.

Follow this last step by using scissors or a ruler and utility knife to cut the wallpaper even. I used scissors because I found it easier to cut the paper than to have to find something to go underneath the paper to use the utility knife.

How to Hang Peel and Stick Wallpaper by Yourself

Now things are starting to get fun. There are two ways to hang peel and stick wallpaper. One is by yourself and another is with a friend. I will share more details about that below but for now, let's talk about how to hang wallpaper by yourself.

First, let's make sure your wall is level. Place your level along with the ceiling and see if it is level and then along the corner or edge of the wall to see if it is level. If it is not level measure the width of your wallpaper on the wall and then draw a level line down the wall.

How to install peel and stick wallpaper by making sure the ceiling and wall are level first.

Next start removing the backing about 10 to 12″ down from the wallpaper.

How to apply peel and stick wallpaper on an accent wall with a shiplap wall covering.

You will need to start in one corner. Place your wallpaper in the corner and then the other side along with the ceiling. I recommend gently sticking it along the ceiling for now. Next, begin bringing the backing down away from the wallpaper and line up the edge of the wallpaper with the wall or level line on the side.

As you move down you may need to reposition the other corner. The most important part is to get the edge of the wallpaper to line up with the corner or your level line.

Keep moving down until you reach the bottom. Then if your wallpaper is straight along the corner then you are ready for the second row.

    Hang Second Row of Wallpaper

Next, let's repeat the first step in the second row of wallpaper. On this row, you will need to look at your pattern and give yourself some extra wallpaper before you cut it to match up the pattern.

In my case, the first shiplap line was two inches down from the ceiling. So, when I went back to cut another row of wallpaper I looked for the first line and marked two inches above it then cut the top.

Again give yourself a little grace and add 1/4″ just in case. Next measure to the bottom and cut just like before.

Now position the wallpaper where the pattern lines up at the top of the wall and smooth it down.

How to apply peel and stick wallpaper on an accent wall with a shiplap wall covering.

Keep moving down the wall lining up the edge of this piece of wallpaper with the other piece that is on the wall. You will need to pull the backing away from the wallpaper as you go down the wall.

And smooth from the center down at an angle to the edges as you go.

Once you get down far enough you can step off your ladder and remove it then continue lining up the edge and pulling the backing down.

When you get to the bottom remove the rest of the backing, smooth down the paper and if there is a chair rail or baseboard smooth it into the crease.

How to Hang Wallpaper with a Partner

Just like before remove all the backing from the sticker wallpaper. You take one end and your partner takes the other. Then position the top against the first row of wallpaper and position the other side along with the ceiling while your partner is keeping the wallpaper away from the wall at the bottom.

Next, move your way down along the first wallpaper edge and line up the pattern. Keep smoothing as you go along with your hand. You will come back after you're all finished to adhere the paper to the wall with the squeegee later.

    Smooth Down the Wallpaper

Now that all the wallpaper is hung go back over it all with the squeegee and smooth it down. This helps the wallpaper suction to the wall for a better finish.

    Trim Excess Wallpaper

Your last step in the peel and stick wallpaper hanging project is to trim away any excess wallpaper that is left along the edges. Simply place your ruler where you want to trim the wallpaper and then cut along the edge of the ruler with your utility knife.

Peel away the excess wallpaper carefully in case there are spots that didn't cut all the way through. If you have an area that is still attached simply use your utility knife to cut it away.

After all the overhanging wallpaper is removed then you are finished and can enjoy your freshly wallpapered room.

    Conclusion

Here are a few tips on peel and stick wallpapering. The first couple of rows seem tricky and it takes a little to get into your stride but once you do the first ones it will get easier.

Having a friend or family member help will make it go by quicker and easier but if you are a work alone kind of person this is a great project for you too.

Save the backing that you peeled off of the wallpaper if you live in a dorm, rental, or if you think you might want to move your wallpaper someday. Here are directions on how to remove the peel and stick wallpaper.

How to Remove Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Simply peel away on the upper corner of a row of wallpaper and then grab the other upper corner. Gently pull it away from the wall as it goes down the wall.

Once you are at the bottom ask another person to take the bottom and lay it flat on the backing paper that is laying on the floor or a table. Smooth the wallpaper on the backing paper and roll it up to be transported to the next place.

Once you are in the next space follow the direction above to hang the reusable peel and stick wallpaper again.

Now you may be wondering where to purchase peel and stick wallpaper. Here are a few favorite suggestions.

Where to Buy Peel and Stick Wallpaper

My shiplap sticky wallpaper came from Target. They have about 10 selections in the store and many more online. Don't forget to get the same lot number when you buy it.

So where is the best place to buy peel and stick wallpaper? Here are some of my favorites.

Etsy has many peelable wallpaper sites and the designs are amazing. You can find some very good prices on Etsy too.

Another great place to shop for peel and stick wallpaper is Urban Outfitters. They have many beautiful and trending designs with lots of modern colors.

Now let's talk about Lulu and Georgia who also have removable wallpaper. I recently came across their designs and fell in love. Lulu and Georgia have modern, traditional designs as well as murals.

Hygge and West peel and stick wallpaper tiles. I love their wallpaper designs! They have a great feel for a modern farmhouse vibe. You might also like to know about Hygge and West bedding and Hygge and West shower curtains.

You might be surprised to hear that West Elm has some wonderful self-adhesive wallpapers. They have many classic designs to choose from on their site.

And last is Amazon which has just about everything you need. They also carry lovely sticky wallpaper in just about any design you desire and if you are a prime member you get it within two days if it is prime.

I hope this post has been helpful and encouraging to give wallpaper a try once more if you vowed to never deal with messy wallpaper again. If you want the wood wall look but are still not convinced to try this kind of wallpaper, consider a DIY faux beadboard or this plywood shiplap.

How to install peel and stick wallpaper

The easiest way to hang wallpaper without mess and frustration when you apply and take it down.

    Prep Time 1 hour
    Active Time 2 hours
    Additional Time 30 minutes
Total Time 3 hours 30 minutes
    Difficulty Easy

    Materials

    Instructions

    1. Begin by measuring your wall and selecting a peel and stick wallpaper. Make sure that each roll is from the same lot number.
    2. Sand the wall if it has a texture or bumps on it.
    3. Take a lightly damp cloth and remove any dust from sanding.
    4. Start on one side of the wall in a corner or on a corner and measure from the ceiling down to where you want the wallpaper to stop.
    5. Lay the roll of wallpaper out on a flat surface and lay your measuring tape next to the wallpaper and mark on both sides.
    6. Take a ruler that is longer than the width of the wallpaper and draw a line connecting the marks.
    7. Cut the wallpaper.
    8. Place a level along the ceiling or the corner or edge of the wall to see if it is straight. If it is not straight use the level to make a straight vertical line down the wall as your guide.
    9. Peel part of the backing from the top of the wallpaper about 10 to 12 inches down from the top.
    10. Place the corner of the wallpaper into the corner of the wall and lightly stick it into place.
    11. Move down a little lining up the edge of the wallpaper with the corner or edge of the wall or along the level line if your wall was not level.
    12. Once you feel like you have the wallpaper running straight you can smooth down across the top.
    13. Next, pull the backing down some more and start with lining up the edge or level line. Keep moving with the edge or level and then smoothing out from there to the other side.
    14. Continue to pull the backing down and smoothing out as you go.
    15. Once you reach the bottom smooth down the wallpaper into the crease where the baseboard or chair is located.
    16. For the next roll of wallpaper, you need to consider the pattern repeat. For this shiplap wallpaper, I had two inches from the ceiling to the line where the shiplap connected. Measure a spot for your pattern repeat.
    17. Next, layout the roll of wallpaper again and measure from the pattern spot up to whatever you figured. I figured two inches so I cut the wallpaper up two inches from the first line on the shiplap.
    18. Repeat from step 5 and continue doing this until you have finished the wall.
    19. Once you have hung all the paper go back over it with a squeegee moving from the center out on each roll.
    20. Cut any excess wallpaper at the top and bottom by placing a metal ruler along the edge and using a sharp utility or xacto knife cut away this wallpaper. Then pull away the excess paper.
    21. If you have a window or anything you need to go around measure and hang the paper just like you would the whole wall and use the metal ruler and utility knife to cut away the excess.

If you are here, then you are wondering how to get rid of cat urine smellCat pee smell is a strong odor that is hard to remove.  So, this post will show you how to remove the odor for good with a Homeright steam machine.

how to get rid of cat urine

You know when your kitty gets old they have a hard time holding their urine. Well, Tink kept having accidents, and after numerous tries, I had finally figured out how to get rid of cat urine smell.

This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you purchase at no cost to you using the links below.  All opinions are all my own.

How to Get Rid of Cat Urine Smell

Cat pee smell has a strong urine odor.  Cat urine is odorless, but when it transfers through the kidney's under normal circumstances, it becomes concentrated and comes out with a strong ammonia smell.

It doesn't take much urine for the smell to be intense.  If your cats urine is strong and they are urinating outside of the liter box or in areas they should it can be an indicator that something is wrong.

Take them to the vet just to make sure they are well.

    Locate the Cat Urine

If you start smelling the cat urine odor begin by finding where your kitty has gone.  Typically they will go in the same spot over and over.

how to get rid of cat urine smell bathroom

Once you find their spot, then it's a matter of getting rid of the smell.

In our situation, our kitty would go in the guest bathtub, bathroom mat or next to this cute little table in the corner.

how to get rid of cat urine smell from furniture

    Clean up the Urine

Now that you know where your kitty has gone take some toilet paper, remove and soak up the mess.  Once it is visibly gone throw the toilet paper in the toilet and flush and let's remove that kitty urine smell.

    Vinegar and Water

My first plan of attack is vinegar and water.  I use this step only when I know the urine has been there for minutes.  If it has been there a long time then this step may do nothing.

Take and mix one part vinegar to three parts water and put it into a spray bottle.  Shake the bottle until you feel it is mixed together.

how to get rid of cat urine smell using vinegar and water

Next, spray a small area on the carpet or tile that is not noticeable for a test run.  Spraying a sample area is vital to make sure it will not discolor your flooring.

I have used vinegar and water on tile, wood, and carpet without any problems but always test for yourself.

If the solution is safe, then go ahead and spray generously over the affected area and under anything where the pee may have traveled.

If the urine soaked into the foot of a piece of furniture, and you have nothing to lose if the solution discolors the furniture, then take a bowl or cup and pour the cleaner into the container and set the foot into the solution.

how to get rid of cat urine smell from furniture

Let it sit for about 5 minutes so it can soak it up and kill the smell.

Be careful about this step if your piece of furniture is made with MDF.  This kind of material will swell when it gets wet.

I would not recommend this step if you have a piece of furniture that swells when it gets wet.

Mop up the floor after the vinegar and water has sat for about 5 minutes.  If this step doesn't work lets go to a product called Natures Miracle and a steamer.

    Homeright SteamMachine

Steaming is my heavy duty step.

Sometimes you need to go to the tough guys to get the job done especially if you cannot reach the odor.  Because cat urine likes to seep into grout, cracks, and crevices, you will need a Homeright SteamMachine.

how to get rid of cat urine using steam by homeright

To combat the smell that has gotten into the hard to reach places here is what you will need and how to remove the odor with Homeright SteamMachine.

    Supplies

    • Homeright SteamMachine
    • Triangle steam mop attachment and pad
    • Jet nozzle attachment
    • Straight adaptor attachment
    • Washcloth
    • Distilled Water
    • Natures Miracle stain remover
    • Products from Amazon.com

    Prepping the Space

Make sure everything is out of the way.  I cleared out the table so I could easily get to the areas where my cat had gone.

how to get rid of cat urine in the bathroom

    Apply Natures Miracle

Next spray the Natures Miracle generously on the floor and along the baseboard.  If the urine went under anything spray the stain remover wherever you think there is urine.

Let the Natures Miracle sit while you get the steamer ready.

    Steamer

Next, make sure the steam machine is unplugged.

Fill the steamer with 40 oz. of distilled water.  Do not to overfill with water.

Tighten the lid, plug in the machine and turn it on.

After about seven or eight minutes the steamer will let you know it is ready because the orange light will go off.

    Clean with No Attachment

First, do not attach any attachments.  Pull the trigger and let the steam flow onto the baseboard.

Steam 12 inches down the baseboard at a time and take a clean washcloth and whip up the baseboard.

Continue to clean the baseboard where you noted the smell.

Not only is this helping with the smell but your baseboards will sparkle.

    Clean with Jet Nozzle Attachment

Now put the straight adapter on the steamer gun nozzle and then the jet nozzle.

Then begin where the smell begins and direct the steam under the baseboard right along the crack where the floor and base meet.

Continue down until you reach the end of where you smelled the smell.

Wipe up any excess steam with the clean washcloth

Clean with Triangle Steam Mop Attachment

    You are almost finished.

Attach the mop attachment and pad and begin steaming the floors.

Start in one corner and draw the steam mop back towards you and move up that space again and on to the next area.

Take your time, so the mop has plenty of time to push steam into the grout.

Wipe up any excess water with a clean cloth.

    Pet Cleaner

Here is a little more information about using a pet cleaner.

I am not a fan of using chemicals but Natures Miracle is a safe pet product, and I only use it if I have to.  I have heard there are other very good products on the market too.

This product was a life saver one time when my kitty decided to urinate in the back of my van coming home from the vet.

Can you image the smell in my van in the Florida heat?  I had tried vinegar, and water,  but the only thing that worked was this cleaner and steam cleaning the floor.  In my van I used a steamer that extracted the steam from the carpet.  I feel certain that helped a great deal on the carpet.

This product is used on carpet, hard floors, furniture, fabric and more.

    Conclusion

You came here to learn how to get rid of cat urine smell, and you have many possibilities.

I found that I had to resort to something more aggressive and healthy for our home and pets to get rid of the cat urine smell and the Homeright SteamMachine did the trick.

Here are a few last tips.

If you have left the cat urine in this place for a long time, you may have to repeat all or some of these steps.

The quicker you clean up cat urine, the easier it is to remove the smell.

I hope this post helps you get rid of that cat pee smell.

Learn the different light bulb types and which ones that will complement your interior space and exterior. We will talk about the different types of light bulbs from LED to incandescent and the best places to put them in your home.

    light bulb types

There are many different light bulb types until it can be confusing so let's jump right in and discuss what options are available.

This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using the links below. All opinions are all my own.

    Light Bulb Types

First let's make a list of the different types of bulbs.

    Products from Amazon.com

Okay so there are more but typically these are the different types of light bulbs we use in our homes.

    LED

I want to start with an LED for a reason.

LED stands for light emitting diode.  LED has been around for a long time and first appeared inside calculators.  Remember that light inside the calculator?  Well, after lots of research they perfected it and made it more affordable for people to use in their home.

I like LED because it is a great filler light like fluorescent and has a clear fresh appearance if you go with 3000 to 3200.  LED is a more neutral light not to warm and not to blue.

Leslie at Deeply Southern Home uses this LED in many places of her home if you want to see an example.  She replaced all your recess lighting with LED and what a difference it has made in her home.

I would recommend using an LED anywhere in your home.  A few of my favorite places are the bathroom.

    light bulb types LED

And in my chandelier in the sitting or reading area off of the kitchen.

    light bulb types LED chandelier

The LED life span can be up to 50,000 hours.

Now let me put that into perspective for you.  If an LED ran for 12 hour days, it would last around 11 years.

    Talk about cost effective!

LED is my new favorite.  I am gradually changing all my lights to LED mainly because they are pretty expensive but well worth the money over time.

And one other note about LED.  They work nicely in the newer enclosed fans like ours in our bedroom.

light bulb types enclosed ceiling fan with LED light

This enclosed fan and light are amazing!  The LED light is fantastic for this room.

    Incandescent

Incandescent is the most commonly used light right now, but I think that is slowing changing.

I still have any incandescent bulbs throughout our home like in our foyer.

    light bulb types incandescent

And I have one in our laundry room for now, but that will change soon.

    light bulb types incandescent

Incandescent bulbs case a more yellow glow which makes your skin look nice.

However, they do not last as long.  An incandescent bulbs life span is about 1,000 to 2,000 hours.

Can you believe how short their life is compared to LED?  WOW!

They are cheaper to purchase but if you add up the hours and such you will see that the LED is less expensive in the long run.  And LED saves on your electricity cost.

You can use the incandescent in any room of your home from bathrooms to kitchen to exterior.

    Fluorescent

Now let's chat about fluorescent.  Fluorescent bulbs are cool to the touch which mean they do not emit heat and they are energy saving.

You will find fluorescent in the office mostly, but many people have them in their kitchen as we have in our home.

    light bulb types fluorescent

They are great a filling up space and are perfect for reading and working.

Fluorescent bulbs last about 30,000 to 36,000 hours.  See why they are so useful in offices.  That means less changing light bulbs, saving energy and cost.

I would not recommend fluorescent bulbs in your home because they are generally not very flattering.

They bring out more blue tones in your skin and make people look more tired.

But there is a fluorescent that is better for your residence.

    Compact Fluorescent

I remember a time when people were all about changing their lighting to compact fluorescent.

This little mini versions of the long fluorescent tube you see in an office building have similar qualities as an LED.

They last around 10,000 hours which is much better than incandescent but not as good as LED.

You can get them in color options.  What I mean by that is they come in warm, natural and so on.

One disadvantage to compact fluorescent is they are not dimmable so if you have a dimmer looks at other options.

You can use compact fluorescent anywhere in your home.  They are cheaper than the LED, but if you are looking for a light that will make your home shine, then I would not recommend compact fluorescent.

    Edison (Antique and Vintage)

So one of the more fun bulbs that people are enjoying is the Edison bulb.

In case you are wondering where the name Edison bulb came from here is a little history lesson.

Carbon filament bulbs were the first bulbs to hit the market in 1882.  Our Edison bulb today has striking similarities to the first carbon filament bulb.

These Edison beauties have become very popular today.  Restaurants and home were wanting a light that produced a mood for a vintage vibe, and the Edison bulb filled the bill.

The last time I saw a real carbon filament bulb was on a screened in porch across the street from my parents' house.  I had been there for so long until it barely produced any light, but it was fascinating to see one still in action.

For the most part, these bulbs come in fun shapes and are used for mood lighting or to create a theme or vibe.

You can use them on porch lamps, as I have on our porch, to replicate an old gaslight.

    light bulb types Edison

They look nice in lamps for show only.  Edison lights are not great for reading.

As far as how long they will last well they have a life span of 15,000 hours.

Are you surprised?  I was because I thought with it casting such a low luster it would last longer.

I recommend the Edison bulb for a more mood light and not for use with reading or illuminating a room.

    Halogen

Many years ago everyone was converting to halogen bulbs.

The halogen light bulb puts out great light, but they can radiate heat.  It is important to consider where you are putting a halogen if you plan to try one.

As far as life span they last a very long time.  They are derived from an incandescent but produce a halogen gas that helps with longevity.

However, they last a long time but not as long as the LED.

I do not have any halogen in my home.  I used to have them in my chandelier in the dining room, but I have changed them to a longer lasting LED.

    Products from Amazon.com

    Conclusion

Well, there you have it.  A little information about the main light bulb types we have today.

All the pictures in this post are light options in my home.  There is only one light fixture that I plan to change and that is the fluorescent in my kitchen.

As much as I like how it fills up the room, I don't care for the humming sound or the lack of lovely illumination.

If you are looking for more information about lighting check out my how to change a ceiling light bulb post, and don't trash those old incandescent light bulbs because we have a fun roundup full of ideas to use with the old bulbs.

How to change a light bulb by showing the threads on lamp On one end of the bulb, you will see a threaded metal piece.  That is the piece that will go into the ceramic threaded hole of your light. How to change a light bulb by showing the metal threads in light fixture Next look for the ceramic hole that also has a threaded metal piece inside. That is where you will be putting the new light bulb. How to change a light bulb by screwing in the bulb to the right If you removed an old bulb, then this step is the reverse of removing a bulb. However, if you are not removing an old bulb then merely put the bulb in the hole and screw it in with a right motion. How to change a light bulb Don't forget to be gentle and give the bulb a little wiggle as you turn. Do not over tighten.  Once it appears to have stopped threading then your light bulb has been installed. Next turn on the light switch to make sure the light works.

There are so many ceiling fan options in stores today that it can be mind-blowing!  And if you have a challenging space, then you're faced with finding that unique ceiling fan.  Learn from a designer how to shop for a unique ceiling fan.  And an enclosed ceiling fan is what we are talking about today.

    Unique ceiling fan

    Unique Ceiling Fan

Let's start with why I was looking for a unique ceiling fan.

In my master bedroom, I have an eight-foot ceiling and a four-poster bed.  Our current ceiling fan blades come very close to the posts.  So, I am looking for a unique ceiling fan with light.

    Best ceiling fan with lights

This post is sponsored by Stile ceiling fan company and contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using the links below.  All opinions are all my own.

What to look for in a ceiling fan:

There are three things you should look for when shopping for a ceiling fan.

    • Aesthetics
    • Quality
    • Function

Well, this formula works for shopping for anything in your home.  For example, it can be helpful when looking for the best-slipcovered sofa.

    Aesthetics: Farmhouse Fan

Before you begin shopping for that perfect ceiling fan, consider what style you are feeling.

In our home, we have a cottage farmhouse style, and all the fans in our house are white.  I wanted to look for a farmhouse ceiling fan in an all-white color to match all my white bedding too.

    Farmhouse ceiling fan

We have already pulled some fantastic farmhouse ceiling fans in our recent post, so this will give you loads of options if you are looking for a farmhouse ceiling fan too.

But the Stile Anderson 22 had that farmhouse look with a modern twist that I was looking for, and they offered it in white.  Update:  The Anderson 22 enclosed ceiling fan is now called the Windara ceiling fan on the Home Depots website.

    Function: Air Flow

Before you get too excited about a charming light fixture that houses a fan, let's ensure the fan functions to your level.  For us, this was airflow and lighting.

I don't know about you, but I had my reservations about the airflow from an enclosed ceiling fan.  Well, to my surprise, the Stile Anderson or Windara offered plenty of airflow, and it spanned out wide enough for us to sleep comfortably.

From what I understand, the power in airflow has to do with the angle of the blade.  There is a pretty good angle on the blades of the Anderson 22 or Windara, which provides serious power in airflow when turned on high.

    unique ceiling fan air flow

As far as the light, this fan offered more than we ever wanted.  It has a LED light that is dimmable.  And it radiates plenty of light when on high.

But the best part about this fan was the remote. We didn't have that on our list, so that was a sweet extra.

    Quality

Remember at the beginning where I talked about there being so many fans until it is mind-blowing.  Well, quality is probably the most important thing out of the three.  But how do you know if a ceiling fan is of good quality?

Well, let me encourage you to look at reviews and comments on top rated ceiling fans while shopping online. I have purchased many household items from reading reviews.

However, I can contest that the Anderson 22 or Windara is of outstanding quality.  It is made of durable parts and does not seem to be flimsy at all.  Even installation went smoothly, and everything fit as it was supposed to.  So it passes the quality test, and I consider it one of the top rated ceiling fans.

    top rated ceiling fans

Now that you know the three main things to look for when shopping for a fan.  Here are a few other tidbits that will be helpful about an enclosed ceiling fan.

Benefits to an enclosed ceiling fan

If you have anything in your room that runs the risk of hitting the fan, then a unique ceiling fan is right for you.

In my case, my bed was an issue, and the best ceiling fan with lights was an enclosed ceiling fan.

    enclosed ceiling fan with light

Another perfect scenario for an Anderson 22 is a child's room with bunk beds.  This one is a safety issue that makes an enclosed fan perfect.

    Hanging your ceiling fan

Now you have purchased your fan, it is time to install it.

The directions that came with the Anderson 22 or Windara are excellent.  But we captured hanging the fan in this video so you can see first hand how it is simple.

Tools to Hang an Enclosed Ceiling Fan

These are the tools we used to hang the Stile Products Anderson or Windara ceiling fan.

Tips for Hanging an Enclosed Ceiling Fan

Hanging an enclosed ceiling fan is very similar to a regular ceiling fan, except you don't have to attach the blades.

Here are a few tips to help with installing your enclosed ceiling fan.

    • Lay some fabric or drop cloth over the table or bed where you will be working to place tools and the fan.

    • Lay all the parts and tools out on the fabric.  It helps to see everything as you are working.

    • If you are installing the fan after you have everything connected, test it before finishing to make sure the fan is working.  It would be frustrating to fit the whole fan and then discover it is not working.

installing a unique ceiling fan with light

    • Make sure to read all the directions in the Stile Products Anderson 22 manual before beginning to install the fan.
    • Use a gorilla ladder to make the installation easier.

    Conclusion

I hope this post has helped you with shopping for the right unique ceiling fan.  Maybe an enclosed ceiling fan with light will be right for you, just like it is for us.

It sure does fit better in our master bedroom.

DIY farmhouse style wainscoting designs add value to your home and loads of character.  Follow along as I share step-by-step instructions on how to install board and batten wainscot.

    DIY FARMHOUSE STYLE WAINSCOTING

To begin any project, you need to do some homework.  Let's start with Pinterest to look for some ideas.  Think about details of the style and height of your wainscot.

I decided to do a tall design because  I love the color white and this would offer plenty of it, while also pulling in the grey-blue from my kitchen on the top.  Now on to the steps of creating the wainscot.

diy farmhouse style wainscot board and batten

HOW TO INSTALL BOARD AND BATTEN

With all projects, I like to pull out all my supplies first. Here is a list of what you will need to do this project.

SUPPLIES TO HANG BOARD AND BATTON

MEASURE YOUR WALL FOR BOARD AND BATTEN

Let's start with measuring each wall where the board and bat will install. Measure the width and height of each wall then take some chalk and draw out the design on the wall.

Now start with one piece of trim, like the shelf piece, and measure that part of the wall where you chalked it out and add it all up.  This measurement is how many feet of that trim you will need.

I used 1/4″  x 2″ vertical pieces, 1″ x 4″ horizontal pieces, and a 1″ x 2″ shelf.  Now continue to measure for each piece until you have them all written down.

    PAINT WALL

diy farmhouse style wainscot painted wall

Now that you have all your tools and pieces of trim planned it is time to apply a coat of white paint on the wall or whatever color you plan for the back of your board and batton.  It is easier to paint the background now rather than after the trim goes up.

    .

HORIZONTAL TRIM PIECE FOR THE TOP

    diy farmhouse style wainscot trim

Remember me saying this is easy?  Well, use your miter saw and cut the longest horizontal piece, and nail it on the wall.  Continue this step around the room.

It helps to have two people do this part. Use a level to make sure the board is straight before you nail it into the wall.

    VERTICAL WOOD TRIM

    diy country style wainscot trim

Okay, this wall is already looking good but will only get better!

Now add your vertical pieces by measuring each piece and using your miter saw to cut them.  The reason why I suggest measuring each section is to make sure that there is no variation from the horizontal top piece down to the baseboard.

Nail each lattice stripe to the wall and now we move on to the last board.

    SHELF TRIM

diy farm house style wainscot trim

We only one piece left and that is the shelf.  Again, cut this part according to your measurements.  This time nail it down into the 1″ x 4″.  Can you believe you are almost done?

    PUTTY, CAULK, AND PAINT

diy farm style wainscot painted white

Now it's time for some more painting. Oops!  I just realized I didn't take a photo of the last painting stage.

Hopefully, my description will be easy to follow.  Take some painter's putty and swipe it into each nail hole then sand it down a little. And use painter's caulk and run a bead down where the boards connect to the wall.

Use your finger or a damp rag to smooth the caulk down into the corner. Now let the caulk dry and then you are ready to paint.

Now that the caulk is dry go ahead and start painting. Once you finish all the painting, you are done! Yay!!

If you like this paint color then you will love these farmhouse paint colors at Life on Summerhill.

Here are ideas for decorating your board and bat.

    CONCLUSION

Let's go over each step again on how to install board and batten.

    • Start with researching what you want on Pinterest
    • Measure your wall and layout the design with chalk on the wall
    • Assemble all the tools you will need
    • Shop for the trim, paint, and any tools you may not already have
    • Paint the walls white or whatever color you want your wainscot to be
    • Cut and install the first horizontal board
    • Trim and install the vertical boards
    • Cut and install the shelf
    • Putty and caulk holes and cracks
    • Paint trim and walls

This project is a two-day job, especially if you have to go to the hardware store to shop for items.  And for the most part, it can be done with one person unless you have any long horizontal boards to hang. Then you might need help.

Now all that is left is to add farmhouse decorations to your board and bat. I added these cute hooks.

Dried flower wall hanging on board and bat

And then my favorite farmhouse-style decorations like these wooden bread and cutting boards and this DIY dried flower hanger I made.

So, I hope this DIY farmhouse style wainscoting encourages you to try this at your house. Here is before and after pictures so you get an idea of where we began.

diy farmhouse style wainscot before photo of wallpaper
how to install board and batten for a farmhouse look

And this is how the room looks now. Did I mention we painted over the wallpaper and I have a tutorial on how to paint over wallpaper too?

I love trim inside a home. It takes a plain build grade home and gives it character. If you love the look of board and batten then check out my DIY board and batten fireplace. You will love how it turned out and just like my rocking chair room it is super easy to make.

There is an art to hanging art.  It took me many tries before I figured out a technique that worked.  But I have to admit that even now I run up against an ensemble of art that I have to put my thinking cap on.  Today I want to share my tools, tips, and tricks to hanging art.  Hopefully, by the end of this post, you will know the art of hanging art.

    Art of hanging art

    THE ART OF HANGING ART

When you start to think about art for your home a great place to begin is on Etsy or social media.  Which just happens to be the inspiration behind this post.

This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using the links below.  All opinions are all my own.

    ART

I recently was approached by a very talented artist outside of Atlanta, Georgia by the name of Anita Martinez. You can find her HERE on Instagram.  She created this beautiful charcoal and ink piece for Hannah's room.

Hannah's room had one wall that desperately needed something.  Anita's piece was perfect along with a few other items that Hannah already had like her macrame wall hanging that she created and a tiny mirror that needed a little paint.

    Art of hanging art

    FLOOR LAYOUT

Before you begin to do anything lay out all your pieces on the floor until you find the arrangement that you love.

Look at the wall where you want your ensemble to go and then find a place on the floor that is about that size.

A more precise way to do this is to measure the wall and then measure out the wall on the floor.  It helps some people to be more detailed on this part.  But if you are good at visualizing then you can skip the measuring.

    art of hanging art

    TOOLS

Now that you have a design laid out on the floor go and collect the tools you will need.  The tools I needed to do this job are:

    1. Hammer
    2. Art Hanging Set
    3. Level
    4. Pencil
    5. 30′ Tape Measure

You can purchase these items by clicking on the words.

    STEP 1: MEASURE THE WALL

Measure the width and length of the wall or area you want the art to go and find the center.  Make a circle for the center mark.

    art of hanging art

STEP 2: FIND CENTER OF ENSEMBLE

Figure out the center of your ensemble.  Then select your main piece or largest piece.  In this case, the Anita Martinez art was our most important piece.

Lucky for us it measured outside of the frame to outside of frame 15 inches.  That means all we have to do is sit the art to the left of the center dot because our design was 30″ wide and half of that is 15″.

Now all I have to do is decided how high I want it.  Because I have the mirror going on top, I decided to make the center of the art a little below eye level.

Whenever you hang art, you should make the center a little above eye level.  But if you're short like me keep in mind that eye level for most people is 5'5.  Position the art on the wall and make a mark with the pencil on the top of the frame.

    STEP 3: POSITION AND LEVEL

Place the art on the wall and make a mark with the pencil on the top of the frame.  Next, put the level on the mark and after it is level draw a faint line all the way across.

    STEP 4: MEASURE FOR NAILS

This frame has two hooks on the back so you will need two nails.  Because the frame is very light weight, I will not need a picture hanger style hook.  If it were heavier, I would have needed a picture hanger like THIS.  These picture hangings come in different weight limits so see how much your art weighs before you shop.

Now I measured the width of the frame which was 15″.  Half of 15 is 7 1/2″ which is what I used to find the center of this piece of art on the wall.

Next, I measured over from my center dot on the wall the find the center of the art.  Then I measured the hooks on the back of the art and found half of that number which was 5.5 inches.  Now all I have to do is measure out on both sides of my center mark 5.5″ and that is where the nails go.

Because these hooks on the back of the frame are so close to the top of the frame, I didn't have to measure down but 1/4″.  Last hang this piece of art.

    art of hanging art

    STEPS 5: REPEAT

Repeat step three and four to hang the other pieces.

    art of hanging art

    art of hanging art

    STEP 6: CLEAN-UP

A job isn't complete until everything is tidy and clean.  Now that all the pieces are on the wall use your eraser on your pencil or use a magic eraser to remove all the marks that are showing.  Magic erasers really do work like magic.

Now that you have all your art on the wall you can sit back and enjoy it and read more at Life on Summerhill like Hannah's Room Tour which will show you the rest of her beautiful bedroom.

    HAPPY DECORATING!
