Is beige coming back in style? Are you looking for beige paint colors? We will answer these questions with the most popular Behr beige paint colors.

Sherwin Williams kilim beige

For over a year, a rumor has been going around that the color beige is coming back in style. But I wonder if it has ever completely gone out of style? I know in our house I decided to keep some beige rooms. Personally, I think beige and gray look beautiful together and make a lovely neutral color scheme.

So with all these questions and thoughts, I want to introduce you to the most popular Behr beige paint colors, talk about their undertone, LRV, and the best places to use the color.

This article will include white colors with warm undertones and beige colors that contrast nicely with white colors like these in my best Behr white paint colors.

Popular Behr Beige Paint Colors

So what do you think has shifted the decor from cool to warm tones? In recent years, farmhouse decor and matte finish cool colored paints were the trend. Then last year, Cottagecore decor came onto the stage with its cozy maximalist designs and moody tones. I personally think warm paint color palette was re-birthed from Cottagecore, as well as other designs.

You can see how it looks with these dreamy Cottagecore bedroom ideas.

But warm colors have never left us, all the farmhouse decor just played them down, white painted shiplap walls and so on, and since they are back as a great option, here are the top colors to make selecting your paint color much easier.

  • Blank Canvas
  • Swiss Coffee
  • Antique white
  • Off white
  • Navajo White
  • Linen white
  • Cottage white
  • Spanish sand
  • Even Better Beige
  • Aged Beige
  • Sentimental Beige

Because Behr paint has been a more recent favorite paint brand choice, I have only used it several times so in this post, I will be sharing one of the colors I have used in my home and then cross reference some Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore colors that look similar to these Behr beige colors.

I hope you love these beige neutral colors. Let's find your new perfect color!

Project Tips:

  • LRV – You'll read the term LRV throughout the post. It stands for Light Reflectance Value. The highest LRV is 100. The higher the number, the more light will reflect from the color. A high LRV is a highly reflective white and is great for a small room or a room that you want to be bright and sunny.
  • RGB – RGB is the amount of red, blue, and green in each color. The colors with higher red levels will have warm tones, and a higher blue will be a cooler white.
  • Paint Delivery: Did you know you can select your BEHR® Paint online and have it shipped to your door? If you plan ahead, this will save you so much time because your paint will arrive in the mail. Consider purchasing other supplies like paintbrushes and trays at the same time.
  • Curbside Pickup: Add the paint to your Home Depot cart on the app when you decide on your paint color. Order the paint on the app for car delivery at the store. You will save yourself so much time and frustration from waiting in line at the paint counter. (Order a day or two in advance. Because of staff shortages, sometimes it takes a couple of days to get notified that your order is ready.)
  • Trim Paint Colors: When picking paint for your whole house, I recommend you pick the same trim color throughout your whole house. It is a great way to keep your home's appearance consistent and make your life easier.

Blank Canvas by Behr

Let's start with looking at the white colors with a warm undertone.

Blank Canvas Behr paint walls

This photo is a little darker than the color appears in person, but Blank Canvas is one of my new favorite creamy white colors, and it was Behr Paint's color of the year. With an LRV of 84, it has a color balance of  R 241 G 237 B 225 giving it a creamy undertone, this is a gorgeous light color with a warm neutral undertone. Anything above 90 is pretty bright, making this white a nice calming warm white. You can see how I used it when I turned my closet into a pantry.

blank canvas by behr

Blank Canvas is a popular color for a reason. This is a great paint color for interior walls, trim, ceiling, furniture – just about everywhere!

Behr Swiss Coffee

Swiss coffee by Behr is so similar to Blank Canvas that you probably cannot tell when they are painted side by side. I love this color also, and it is very similar to Alabaster by Sherwin Williams, which I used in my niece's home.

Because this paint color is another warm white, we used it in her guest bathroom. Look how lovely it turned out. This is a great paint color for walls, trim, ceiling, floors, and more. It even works great as an exterior paint.

White farmhouse bathroom renovation

The LRV, light reflective value on this color is also 84, making it a nice warm color but still bright enough to look great in small spaces and nicely reflect natural light. It has a color balance of R 241 G 237 B 224. If you want a white color with a beige undertone, this is your color but if you want a more beige-beige color, then keep reading because I have some beautiful ones to share.

swiss coffee by behr

Swiss Coffee is great for walls, trim, doors, furniture, accent walls, cabinets, ceilings, and exterior.

Behr Antique White

Antique white has a little more color and shows an even warmer white look. It is a beautiful warm neutral paint color. It is similar to Benjamin Moore Bone White, and here is an example in my living room.

Spring decorating ideas for your fireplace mantel

I love this color because it gives just a hint of contrast up again a white white color like ultra pure white by Behr. The LRV is 73, so it's a nice warm shade. The color balance is 232 221 202. With the higher red balance, it's a warm and cozy color.

Antique white by Behr paint

Great places to use this color are walls, trim, doors, cabinets, exterior, and furniture.

Off White by Behr

Off white is similar to antique white by Behr but ever so slightly darker. I have a paint color in my hallway that looks very similar to off white so you can get an idea of what it will look like in your home.

Sherwin Williams kilim beige

Off White has a LRV of 76, so it's a little brighter than Antique White.  With a color balance of R 231 G 226 B 210, it's heavier on the reds and greens, so it has a warm undertone.

The best places to use this color are walls, doors, cabinets, exterior, and furniture.

Frequently asked questions:

What is the most popular beige paint color?

The most popular beige paint color is by Sherwin Williams called Accessible Beige. After years of designing homes, this color is selected more than any other beige color.

Is Behr Aged Beige warm or cool?

Aged Beige by Behr is a beautiful color with a warm undertone. If you look at the color numbers, it is high on red, then green, and a much lower blue, making it a nice warm neutral.

What are the most popular Behr beige paint colors?

In my research for the best Behr beige paint colors, I found that the beige colors on the whiter side are used the most. For example, Blank Canvas and Swiss Coffee are white colors with a beige undertone. But if you are looking for the most popular Behr beige color with a deeper value, I see Aged Beige and Even Better Beige trending.

Navajo White

Navajo white by Behr paint. Best beige paint colors

Navajo White has a color balance of  235 222 196. That very low blue score means it has very warm and yellow undertones. The LRV of 74 means it's not very light reflective, adding to the warmth of this color. Navajo White is great for walls, cabinetry, and furniture.

Linen White

Linen White is also in the white color family.

Linen white by Behr paint

Has a whiter look with a LRV of 85. The color balance of 247 237 216 means it's not as beige-y as some of these colors, but it still has a warmer tone. It's great for walls and ceilings.

Cottage White

Cottage white is also in the white color family with a higher LRV of 82.

Cottage white by Behr

With a color balance of 243 233 214 it has nice warm undertones that are great for walls, furniture, cabinets, and exteriors.

Spanish Sand

Spanish Sand is still considered a white color, but it's right on the cusp of a true beige.

Spanish Sand by Behr

With an LRV 64 you're getting more depth of color. With a color balance of R 220 G 208 B 189, Spanish Sand is great for walls, cabinetry, trim, and furniture.

Even Better Beige

This beige paint color is admired so much until Behr made it a paint color of the month in 2022. Even Better Beige is so similar to Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams, and if you know anything about Sherwin Williams paint, then you know this is one of their top colors. Knowing that makes me think no wonder Even Better Beige is popular.

With an LRV of 60, it's a warm and cozy color. The color balance of  R 212 G 202 B 186 makes it a really pretty light beige. To help give you an idea of what it will look like in your home, here is a photo of Jenna Sue Designs‘ bathroom. Look how pretty and warm this color is on the walls.

Even Better Beige by Behr paint. Best beige paint colors

The best places to use Even Better Beige are walls, doors, furniture, cabinets, and exterior.

Aged Beige

Aged Beige is in the neutral color family. This one is a very pleasant beige color with an LRV of 63.

Aged Beige by Behr Paint

With a color balance of  215 207 192, it will make your room feel warm and cozy. walls, trim, exterior, furniture, and cabinets. If you use this on a ceiling, keep in mind it will make the ceiling feel lower. So if, for example, you have very high ceilings in your dining room and want to make the room feel cozier, Aged Beige is a perfect choice.

Sentimental Beige

Sentimental Beige is more of a greige color, which means it has grey and beige put together. It has an LRV of 69, so it's a nice warm color with a deeper look that isn't too dark but not too white.

Sentimental beige by Behr paint

With a color balance of 224 216 197, it's heavier on the red tones, so it has a little bit of red undertones but not too much. walls, trim, cabinetry, exterior, floors, and furniture. We'll talk more about the best greige paint colors in a new post soon!

Behr ultra pure white walls

You might be thinking, how many white Behr paint colors are there? Well, you will be surprised and possibly overwhelmed so in this post, I have narrowed it down to twelve white colors.

After many years of designing new homes and remodeling old homes, I have found that white is almost always used either for trim, walls, cabinets, or anywhere in a home. Recently I have been using Behr paint more and more, and I love it so when I started thinking of a white for our exterior doors I thought why not go to the most popular Behr white paint colors?

Best Behr White Paint Colors

Before we dive into white paint colors, undertones, and pictures of room applications, here is a list of the best white paint colors by Behr

  • Ultra Pure White
  • Blank Canvas
  • Swiss Coffee
  • Spun Cotton
  • Sleek White
  • Whisper White
  • Cameo White
  • Painter's White
  • Polar Bear
  • White
  • Frost
  • Silky White

Now that we have a list of the best Behr white paint colors, here are examples.

Project Tips:

  • LRV – You'll read the term LRV throughout the post. It stands for Light Reflectance Value. The highest LRV is 100. The higher the number, the more light will reflect from the color. A high LRV is a high reflective white and is great for a small room or a room that you want to be bright and sunny.
  • RGB – RGB is the amount of red, blue and green in each color. The colors with higher red levels will have warm tones, a higher blue will be a cooler white.
  • Large peel and stick samples from Home Depot for some of the Behr white colors. I find this to be the easiest way to see how a color will look in my home. I'll add them whenever available.

  • Trim Paint Colors: When your picking a paint for your whole house, I recommend you pick the same trim color through your whole house. It is a great way to keep your home's appearance consistent and will make your life easier.

Behr Ultra Pure White

A couple of years ago, I was redecorating our guest bedroom, and because it is such a small bedroom, I knew a pure white color was what it needed. So I selected Ultra Pure White by Behr, and it is the perfect white paint color for this room. It has a soft appearance, and painting the trim and walls the same color made painting super easy.

With an LRV of 94 and color balance of 248 248 243, it reflects natural light a great deal, allowing the light to bounce off the walls and fill a room with sunshine. This is a great choice for a small room. It makes the room seem larger. Ultra Pure White is a good clean, crisp, and clear white. It works nicely with all colors. It a highly popular color to use on trim and doors.

Ultra Pure White is also an excellent color for trim, doors, walls, accent walls and furniture. Here is where my friend Lynsey used it as a trim color throughout their early 1900s Victorian home. Isn't it beautiful!

You can get a large peel and stick sample of Ultra Pure White from Home Depot.

And here is where my friend Fallon used Ultra Pure White on an accent wall.

Blank Canvas by Behr

Blank Canvas is another color I have experience with, and I love it even more than Ultra Pure White. This beautiful warm white is even Behr's paint color of the year 2023. I am not surprised because look at how beautiful this color looks on the side walls of my converted closet into pantry.

Blank Canvas Behr paint walls

With an LRV of 84, it has a color balance of  241 237 225 giving it a creamy undertone, this is a gorgeous white that has a warm neutral undertone. This is definitely one of my favorite white paint colors. This is a great place to start if you're looking at warmer white paint colors.

Behr Swiss Coffee

Frequently Asked Questions

Is beige coming back in 2023?

Beige is coming back in style but greige is probably more in style. Griege is an even mix of greys and tans which make it a great neutral paint color. Gray is not gone yet in fact many people are mixing greys and beiges in their home.

Is beige a neutral color?

Yes beige is considered a neutral color but one thing to know is that beige has a warm undertone. Beige is a neutral with a warm undertone.

Is beige replacing gray?

I honestly do not think beige will replace grey and gray will replace beige. Both are consider neutral colors and neutral colors will always be a great color to use in home interior and exteriors. However, greys are becoming less people in the neutral family while beige is coming more prevelent.

Polar Bear

Polar Bear is highly light reflective with an LRV of 90. With a color range of 245 244 236 it definitely has a warm undertone. This is an excellent color for walls or furniture.

polar bear by behr

You can get a large peel and stick sample of Polar Bear at Home Depot.

Behr White

Another great trim, cabinet, door or anywhere color is Behr white. This color is evenly distribed with 235 235 230. That makes it a nice clean color.

Here is a beautiful excample of white by Behr on my friend Luci's kitchen cabinets. Luci has a blog on home decor at the White Oak Shop. They wanted a classic white that matched everything and since the cabinets when all the way to the ceiling picking Behr white was a no brainer.

Behr white painted on kitchen cabinets

This beautiful Behr white has a LRV 83 which means it's not going to be reflecting a lot of light and will give that calm look but keep that bright white feeling. This is perfect for a kitchen or bathroom cabinet and the perfect choice if you need a nice, neutral white.

Frost

Frost is different from all the other whites mentioned above as its color balance is  R 239 G 240 B 236, so it is highest on green, giving it cool undertones. This would make an excellent color for your trim if you like grays but keep in mind, with an LRV of 87, it will not reflect a lot of light. It's a great farmhouse matte color.

frost by behr

You can get a large peel and stick sample of Frost at Home Depot.

Silky White

Silky White has a low LRV of 83, so it is not highly reflective. It has a warm feel with a color balance of R 238 G 235 B 226. It would look great on your wall with Ultra Pure White on the trim, or even use it on the walls and the trim.

Have you ever wanted to give your wicker baskets a new look, but didn't know how to paint them? Well, not to worry! In this blog post, I will show you how to paint wicker baskets using simple methods and supplies. So get ready to transform those boring baskets into beautiful pieces of art!

Living room decorated with painted baskets

After painting a few baskets I couldn't wait to share how to paint wicker baskets using two of my favorite methods.

For years I have been painting wicker baskets and decorating with them. Baskets are a great way to add texture and character to your home decor but sometimes you need to change the color to fit your style. Maybe your old wicker baskets are weathered and need a fresh new look. Maybe you have thrift store baskets that need a basket makeover. Or maybe you have new baskets that are a great shape but not the lovely color you want.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

How to Paint Wicker Baskets

The two best ways to paint wicker baskets are spray paint and chalk paint. Both are easy to apply and you can paint a basket in one day. Simply clean the basket. Then paint the basket. Let it dry and it is ready to use.

But let's break this down even more and I will share a few tips and tricks to make your old basket turn out looking fresh and new with just a few craft supplies.

Painting Basket Supplies

Shop the post:

Get a Fresh Start

Spray painting wicker baskets is easy and you don't need many supplies. Gather spray paint, the basket, and a location where you don't have to worry about the spray paint getting on anything else. I find it's a great idea to spray paint your basket in an outdoor space.

You need to start with a clean basket. The first step is to brush off the basket. If it is really dirty clean the basket with water and mild soap. Rinse it off, then let it dry. You can find detailed instructions on how to clean a wicker basket here. Now let's paint the basket. In this case, I'll be using a white paint color.

How to paint a basket by cleaning it first

How to Spray Paint Wicker Baskets

Start by spray painting the inside of the basket. Use even strokes holding the can of paint away from the basket about 8 inches. I find placing the basket on its side helpful.

Spray painting the inside of a wicker basket

Let the inside dry for 5 minutes and spray paint another coat. I usually have to paint three coats if I am using white spray paint.

For the next step, let it dry for 5 minutes then turn the basket over and paint the outside. If you do not need the bottom painted and you have a handle, go ahead and leave it sitting uprights and paint the outside.

When painting the outside I start spraying slightly away from the basket and move the paint in long even strokes across the basket. This helps get a more even finish. Apply a second and third coat if necessary.

Spray painting a wicker basket

If you have a handle on the baskets leave it to paint last. Once you have finished spray painting the body of the basket, now paint the handle.

Painting the handles of a basket with spray paint

Let the paint dry completely before using the basket. This usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how hot or humid it is outside.

I like spray painting baskets because the paint adheres very well. And it is very easy and cheap. As far as what paint I like to use, I like to use matte finish paint. You can find a matte finish by looking at the cap of a can of spray paint.

Also, I am not picky about what brand of spray paint I use. I have used different kinds of spray paint like this Rust-oleum brand and I have used Behr spray paint chalk paint before, too.

Chalk Paint Wicker Baskets

You can also chalk paint wicker baskets following these simple steps. I like to use this painting technique indoors so first place a drop cloth on your work area, you'll need chalk paint, a cup of water, and a paintbrush.

Chalk paint, dropcloth and supplies to paint a wicker basket

Begin chalk painting with a brush on the inside of the basket. Use a little water on the end of the paintbrush and then dip the brush into the chalk paint. Next, chalk paint on the inside of the basket starting on the bottom and working your way up.

Chalkpaint the inside of a basket

You may need to work the paint into the little nooks and cracks. Also, a little paint will come through the cracks onto the outside of the basket.

When you have finished painting the inside, smooth out where the excess paint has come through on the outside.

After it is dry, turn it over and chalk paint the outside of the baskets. If your basket is going to sit on a table and no one will see the bottom I wouldn't paint the bottom.

If you need to paint the bottom, I would wait until the inside is dry and turn the basket over. For this particular project I am not planning to paint the bottom of my basket so it will be painted upright.

Start painting from the bottom up. If your basket has a handle like mine, you can hold the handle to help paint around the outside of the basket.

Chalkpainting the outside of a wicker basket

Now if you have a handle, paint it last. And don't forget to smooth out any paint that has squeezed through the cracks onto the inside.

Your Basket is Almost Done!

You may need more than one coat on your basket for full coverage. If so, let it dry for about 15 minutes and then apply another coat. I love how my basket looks with one coat so we are going with one coat.

Now let the entire basket dry for 30 minutes and then you are ready to decorate with your freshly painted basket.

Painting the handle of a wicker basket with chalk paint

I love the look of chalk paint on baskets. It gives it a beautiful chalky finish. My best advice on chalk painting baskets is to take your time and use an artist brush if needed to get the paint down into the cracks.

Between the two techniques, I find spray painting a basket provides and easy makeover and is quicker. But I love the old-fashioned vintage farmhouse look of a chalk-painted basket. They both look amazing!

Final Thoughts!

Now that your basket is painted, you can display it in your home decor. Here are some ideas for decorating with baskets.

You can place them on a bookcase with other decorations.

White painted basket used as decoration on a bookcase

Or you can set it on a coffee table on top of books and fill it with bottles and a sprig of flowers or greenery.

White chalk painted basket filled with bottles and fresh flowers

You can also use baskets for storage in your kitchen, bathroom or any room. Get creative and have fun!

If you need more ideas try how to decorate with wicker baskets or how to hang wicker baskets on walls. Both of these posts will inspire you and give you lots of ideas.

Now that you know how to paint wicker baskets, go forth and give those boring baskets a makeover! You can paint them all kinds of lovely colors or go with simple white like I did today.

Baskets are a great way to add texture and character to your home decor. And this quick project is an easy way to give your baskets a makeover. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below or contact me. I love hearing from you!

Happy painting!

    5. Start spraying slightly away from the basket and move the paint in long even strokes across the basket. This helps get a more even finish. Apply a second and third coat if necessary.
    6. If you have a handle on the baskets leave it to paint last.
    7. Let the paint dry completely before using the basket. This usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
    8. If you'll be using chalk paint, you'll want a drop cloth on your work area, you'll need chalk paint, a cup of water, and a paintbrush.
    9. Use a little water on the end of the paintbrush and then dip the brush into the chalk paint. Next, chalk paint on the inside of the basket starting on the bottom and working your way up.
    10. You may need to work the paint into the little nooks and cracks. Also, a little paint will come through the cracks onto the outside of the basket.
    11. When you have finished painting the inside, smooth out where the excess paint has come through on the outside.
    12. After it is dry, turn it over and chalk paint the outside of the baskets. If your basket is going to sit on a table and no one will see the bottom I wouldn't paint the bottom.
    13. If you need to paint the bottom, I would wait until the inside is dry and turn the basket over.
    14. Start painting from the bottom up. If your basket has a handle like mine, you can hold the handle to help paint around the outside of the basket.
    15. If you have a handle, paint it last. And don't forget to smooth out any paint that has squeezed through the cracks onto the inside.
    16. If you need more than one coat, let it dry for about 15 minutes and then apply another coat.
    17. Let the entire basket dry for 30 minutes and then you are ready to decorate with your freshly painted basket.

These porch ceiling ideas will help you plan your new porch ceiling or redesign your old one. We will walk through different styles of porch ceilings to help you make your decision.

Porch ceiling ideas

With warmer weather here it is time to get outside and freshen up our porches. This is a great time to give your porch ceiling a fresh coat of paint or a whole new look.

An often overlooked design element, these porch ceiling ideas will help you plan a new or soon to be improved porch ceiling. Whether you have a screened porch or an open porch, a beautifully finished ceiling is a great way to make the area feel complete.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

Porch Ceiling Ideas

In all my years of designing homes, I found that the ceiling of a covered porch seems to be the one area that is most overlooked. Think of the ceiling as a fifth wall and treat it with as much attention as everything else. I want to share with you the best porch ceiling ideas.

Okay now, let's do some brainstorming on all the porch ceiling ideas for your front porch ceiling, back porch ceiling, outbuilding ceiling, and so on.

What can I use for outdoor porch ceiling?

  • Shiplap
  • Beadboard
  • Painted Wood
  • Stained Wood
  • Tin Roofing
  • Vinyl
  • Clear

Shop porch ceiling building materials:

Now that we have a list of ideas let's look at photos of different woods, painted and stained.

Beadboard Porch Ceiling

This is our back porch and when we were designing this space I wanted something authentic meaning real wood. I love the old southern style of blue porches and beadboard ceilings so I thought this is the perfect spot for that look.

Ceiling Back Porch Idea

A while back I wrote about popular haint blue porch ceiling colors. I have loads more photos of the porch ceiling painted in sky blue colors. But for our porch, I wanted that feeling of height and the illusion of a blue ceiling that will give you just that.

A popular choice, the beadboard ceiling was very easy to install. It comes in larger sheets so we simply place the board up and nailed them into studs. It was as simple as that but creates an elegant look.

Next is my friend Sara who has another haint blue ceiling porch with beadboard on her front porch.

Haint blue porch ceiling idea

This will give you an idea of what an open porch area looks like with a beadboard ceiling. Isn't Sara's porch so wonderful!

She is all-the-time decorating her porch and has the prettiest flowers around her front door. If you get a chance go check out her Instagram at simplysoutherncottage.

Shiplap Porch Ceiling Idea

Next is shiplap because it is similar to beadboard except the boards are wider. This is my friend Jennifer's front porch. Isn't it lovely!

Shiplap ceiling porch

When they designed their porch she wanted the traditional southern farmhouse shiplap design.

Her home is so pretty and she has loads and loads of photos on her Farmhousewifey Instagram. She also shares lots of home decor tips.

But they used an exterior shiplap material for their porch ceiling and then painted it Alabaster by Sherwin Williams.

Painted Wood Ceiling

Next, let's look at other painted wood porch ceiling ideas.

There are so many colors to choose from when selecting paint colors for your exterior. I have made that process easier by narrowing down the most popular Sherwin Williams exterior paint colors in another blog post.

But today let's look at one example of a porch painted wooden ceiling in a neutral color.

Painted beige wood porch ceiling

If you love rustic farmhouses then you will adore my friend Beth's house and porch. Her home would make the most wonderful bed and breakfast.

Her porch ceiling is constructed with T1-11 with a beadboard design. By using wood tones it looks stained and finishes the whole look. But if you look closely it is actually painted a beige color creating a beautiful rustic look.

I love how it turned out. It fits the style of her home perfectly!

Remember if you love rustic farmhouse decor then go check her out on her Instagram at shady_pines3interiors.

Stained Wood Porch Ceiling

Now if you love stained wood then you will love this porch ceiling idea. Look at my friend Alieta's porch. Don't you love her ceiling?

This is a great example of a stained wood porch ceiling. These are shiplap boards stained.

She is always decorating her porch with ideas that you will love on her Instagram at alietatreasurehunting and website at Alieta Treasure Hunting.

Stained wood porch ceiling idea

And what do you think about her pink door?

She has managed to pick just the right shade of pink. Front porches are the first thing people see when they come to your home and a beautiful porch adds to your home’s curb appeal.

This front door creates a lovely focal point and creates visual interest. You can find out more about her door in my popular front door paint colors post.

Here is the other side of her porch, with a lovely seating area and gorgeous stone pillars, to see how amazing her ceiling turned out.

Stained porch ceiling idea

Tin Roofing Porch Ceiling

Next, let's talk about tin roof porch ceiling ideas. I have two ideas and it just happens that they both are beautifully decorated. First, here is my friend Donna on Instagram at gramsfarmhouse.

She has the coziest outdoor space with a tin roof over it and string lights. This is a fabulous example of a tin roof porch in an outdoor living space. I can imagine sweet, intimate dinner parties on this porch.

Take a moment to look at all her farmhouse decorations. This unique look is so pretty and inviting!

tin roof porch ceiling ideas

A while ago I shared fall porch decor ideas and my friend Chyvonne's outbuilding was featured. This small shed in her backyard is another perfect example of a tin roof porch ceiling.

Isn't it adorable! I love this photo and all her decorations!

Shed porch ceiling ideas using tin roofing

Tin is such a great porch ceiling material. Basically, if your porch has a tin roof, it's a good idea to leave the space between the ceiling joists open and let that beautiful tin roof shine. There are limitless cool porch ceiling designs possible.

If you have room for a hammock on your porch, add one because the best soft rainy day naps on a porch are the ones with tin roofs.

If you love Chyvonne's decorated shed and outdoor area then check her out on her Instagram at burlapandrust.

Vinyl Porch Ceiling Idea

Now let's talk about vinyl porch ceilings. Our house is brick and vinyl so when the builder built our house he put vinyl beadboard on the ceiling on the front porch.

Vinyl porch ceiling idea

The beauty of vinyl is its longevity. It's one of the best inexpensive porch ceiling ideas. It washes up nicely and you don't have to do any touch-up painting. However, did you know you can paint vinyl?

If you want color on your vinyl porch ceiling you can paint it a different color. It's a great way to change up the look of your porch ceiling. We have never painted ours but I have had many clients' vinyl ceilings painted.

On our porch, we kept it that crisp wonderful white color. I love how they gave it a tongue and grove farmhouse wood look.

Clear Porch Ceiling Idea

Next on our agenda is a clear porch ceiling idea. Wait until you see this beauty!

Rachel and her hubby built her a greenhouse during the pandemic all by themselves. Can you believe that? I think that is wonderful!

Look at how pretty her greenhouse turned out.

Clear porch ceiling idea

They used polycarbonate roofing panels in clear. This is a perfect roof for a greenhouse and porch but it would also be amazing on a pergola or any kind of porch. This simple look can give the illusion of more space if you have low ceilings. Especially if you want something that lets the natural light in.

If you want to see more beautiful photos of her greenhouse, click on Rachel's greenhouse to see or check her out on Instagram at rachel_thepondsfarmhouse.

Well, guess what? We have come to an end to my best recommendations of porch ceiling ideas.

Final Thoughts

Now that we have taken a tour of my friend's porches and looked at their ceilings do you have a favorite? It is so hard to decide when you are planning your porch design. There are a lot of considerations when choosing the right kind of ceiling material for your home.

I am currently helping my sister work on a remodel of my parent's old house. You can see all about it in my Instagram stories highlight called Roe House.

Guess what we are working on right now? You guessed it — her porch ceiling.

Since we live in the south we are thinking of doing a haint blue porch ceiling and, if my memory serves me correctly, it has exposed wooden beams so I think it would be nice to leave them white.

Okay, now it is your turn. What porch ceiling idea do you like the most and why?

I am so glad you stopped by to visit and I hope you have found this blog post helpful!

Happy Decorating!

Painting furniture with chalk paint gives it new life and a whole different look.  Today we are going to talk about how to paint with chalk paintFollow along for step by step instructions and some tips and tricks to see how this furniture is painted with chalk paint.

Showing how to paint with chalk paint by brushing on the back of a furniture hutch in a white color.

Probably the hardest part about learning how to paint with chalk paint is deciding on what you will paint and the color. But when it comes to chalk paint the sheen is the easy part because all chalk paints come in a beautiful matte finish.

Thankfully I had the help of Kirsten from The Wooden Butterfly in Tallahassee, FL.  This was my first time painting with chalk paint and she is a great teacher and knows a great deal about chalk paint.  And her Facebook is a fabulous resource too.

But honestly, I couldn't wait to get my hands on chalk mineral paint and see how it fairs from milk paint.   And without giving a spoiler alert let's jump right into painting with chalk paint on furniture.

This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you purchase at no cost to you using the links below.  All opinions are all my own.

How to Paint with Chalk Paint

Like most painting projects it is best to get started with collecting your supplies.

How to paint with chalk paint Dixie Belle supplies. Dixie Belle cotton white chalk paint jar, clear cup with water and a brush sitting inside the water. White Lightening cleaner by Dixie Belle. Wooden spoon sample painted in cotton white and painters tape.

Getting Started

What do you use to paint with chalk paint?

Now that you know what you need to paint with chalk mineral paint you might be asking what can you paint with chalk paint? Well, I have experience painting old furniture, new furniture, books, and fabric.

I love to paint furniture and I have used chalk paint on a canvas drop cloth material. Check out my DIY drop cloth rug tutorial to see more.

Clean Furniture

Start with cleaning the areas you want to paint.  If you only want to paint a particular area, as I did, then spray the cleaner on your rag and wipe it on. Make sure to clean the entire surface.

Once you have rubbed the degreaser onto the surface, then use another clean wet rag to wipe off the degreaser. Make sure all the residue is gone.

Jar of Dixie Belle 8 oz. white lightning cleaner.

We used white lightning by Dixie Belle.  You will need to mix it in a bottle, but it lasts a very long time. It is important to do the prep work before you start painting with any paint project.

Tape and Paper

Now it is time to paper anything you don't want the paint to get on and then tape it down.  Also, use the painter's tape along any edges, so you get that nice clean line when you are finished chalk painting.

How to paint with chalk paint use painters tape to tape any areas.

Keep Brush Wet

If you are starting with a new brush or if your brush is dry make sure to dip it into the water about 1/2 halfway down then get the excess water off the brush on a paper towel.

Dipping a paint brush inside a cup of water to keep the brush moist because chalk paint works better if it is moist.

Doesn't this seem crazy?  But it works.

Whenever you feel like the paint is dragging on the furniture go back and lightly dip the brush into a little water and blot it on a paper towel.

It is like magic!

Your paint will go on much more smoothly and give a smooth finish.

Apply Chalk Paint First Coat

Now it is time to start the transformation.

Dip your damp brush into the paint about 1/2″ and start applying chalk paint along the grain.

How to paint with chalk paint. Apply the first coat of paint on a hutch furniture piece.

Brush thin coats of paint and brush in small sections one at a time. You may have to push the paint into corners or grooves like these, but other than that painting should be a smooth motion with the grain.

First coast of chalk paint. How to paint with chalk paint

Also, apply the first coat lightly.  You should be able to see through it a little.

Let this first coat dry for about 10 minutes.

It helps to have a fan running to dry your paint, or you can use a blow dryer on cool setting.

.

Apply Second Coat of Chalk Paint

Just like the first step apply the second coat.

Painting the second coat of chalk paint on the back of the hutch.

You can see how it is starting to cover.

If you are using a darker color, this may be your last coat of chalk paint.  But if you are using white paint, you will probably need one more layer of paint.

Make sure that your first coat is good and dry.  If it is not completely dry the paint will come off like pictured below.

Showing where the second coat is damaged because the first coat was not dry enough.

If this happens, do not fret because the next coat will smooth it out.  Or at least it worked for us.

Now let this coat dry for about an hour.

Apply Third Coat

Okay, we are almost to the home stretch.

Just like the other two coats of paint start applying your third coat.

This coat will make it a pure white cotton color. You will need multiple coats of chalk mineral paint when using light colors over dark colors.

Painting with chalk paint. Applying the third coat of chalk paint on hutch furniture.

Let this last coat dry overnight.

See how easy it is with this chalk paint how to guide.

Add Wax

Now it is time to add a top coat. This step is optional especially if you are painting something that won't be touched or anything sat on it. But to be on the safe side, I decided to add the wax.

Next, you will need some wax and a natural bristle brush.

If you want to see the beautiful color of the chalk paint then use a clear wax but if your want an aged or distressed look go with wax with a color like brown wax. A dark wax gives any piece a nice patina.

Paint with chalk paint. Can of Dixie Belle best dang wax 10 oz. clear and waxing brush.

All you have to do is dip the brush into the soft wax and start brushing it on like butter.

Dipping the waxing brush into the wax and moving in a circular motion.

You can use the right to the left brush strokes, up and down or even in circles.

It does not matter.

But personally, I like to go up and down in continuous motion. Work in small areas and start on one side and work your way to the other side. I like to do it this way so I can make sure I am covering the whole surface with wax.

Applying the wax with a brush on top of the dry chalk paint to the back of the hutch in up and down motion.

Once you have applied the wax take a clean low lent soft cloth and rub the wax off.

Using a dry clean rag buff off the wax on the chalk painted surface.

Then take another clean cloth and buff the wax that is still on the chalk painted surface.

See how easy it is the paint with chalk paint.

Remove the Tape and Paper

Now that you are finished remove the tape and paper carefully.

If it looks like any paint is coming up use an x-acto knife to score the color.  I had to do this to keep the paint from pulling away from the cabinet.

So here is the final product without accessories.

Showing the back of the hutch where I removed the tape after chalk painting.
showing the back of the hutch painted.

And then with accessories.

I love how painting the back of this old piece of furniture made my grandma's dishes stand out more.

Hutch with painted back and Currier and Ives dishes displayed inside on the shelves.

Products from Amazon.com

Conclusion

If I had to compare chalk paint vs. milk paint, I would say chalk paint is probably easier and you do not have to mix it.  It is thicker and covers better and gives that same old fashion look.

The finished hutch with chalk painted back and Currier and Ives dishes displayed inside.

But I still LOVE milk paint!!! Both paints give full coverage and a flawless finish. Chalk paint doesn't leave brush marks which I love, and you can get an antique look with wax on both. A lighter color you have to do more coats but dark colors are less.

Don't confuse chalk paint with chalkboard paint. I have actually picked up chalkboard paint before thinking it was chalk-style paint. Chalkboard paint is used to paint with but after you are finished you can write on the painted surface just like an old-fashioned chalkboard.

What is the best chalk paint?

I only have experience with a few brands but after asking some friends I have learned that Dixie Belle is high on the list as well as Annie Sloan. Behr carries a chalk paint brand and what's really cool is they have it in a spray can.

Fusion mineral paint, which has a chalk painted look but is not actually chalk paint, is a favorite of mine too. My DIY exterior Dutch door post shows off the beautiful finish of Fusion.

Where to buy chalk paint for furniture?

You can find chalkpaint like the Behr brand at Home Depot, Amazon carries many brands like Dixie Belle and Annie Sloan chalk paint is sold in local small retailers. Most chalk paints come in many different colors and the colors give a beautiful farmhouse style

To find a retailer near you simply go to her website and search your location.

Well, now you know painting furniture with chalk paint is easy and you know some of the best chalk paint brands and tools you will need.  In a matter of hours, you can have a whole new look.

Chalk painted hutch back with Currier and Ives plate, two cutting boards, vintage mason jar candle and apples with tops cut off and tea lights place down inside for a homemade tealight apple candle.

Update: Years later and I still love the chalk-painted finish. It looks amazing and as fresh as the day I painted it.

The best Behr neutral paint color from bright white to black and amazingly cool and warm hues in between. The most popular Behr neutral colors for your next home improvement project for interior, exterior, and even furniture.

Best neutral Behr paint colors

Paint is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to transform a room but picking out the new paint color is hard when you are looking at a little paint chip. So when it was time to paint our guest room I decided to do a little research and find the best Behr neutral paint colors.

After spending hours searching and looking at photos these are the most popular Behr neutral paint colors.

This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using the links below. All opinions are all my own.

Best Behr Neutral Paint Colors

  • Ultra Pure White
  • Cameo White
  • Swiss Coffee
  • Black
  • Graceful Grey
  • Antique White

Now that you know Behr's favorite paint colors let's look more closely at each color and an example of it used in a room.

Behr Ultra Pure White

Our first color example is Ultra Pure White and it is the color I choose for our guest bedroom. It is a white color but has the softest feel to it. Some white colors blind you when you enter a room but this white is gentle on the white and was the perfect backdrop for this cheap small bedroom makeover.

Popular Behr white paint color ultra pure white

I painted the walls and trim the same white Behr paint color. Talk about an easy paint job. No cutting in with two different colors. This is a great color for all your trim in your home too and it looks amazing on furniture.

Favorite Behr paint color Ultra Pure White

Here is another shot of the guest bedroom so you can see more of this popular Behr white color. Whether you have natural light or not this color will brighten a room.

Another beautiful example is this kitchen by House on Heatherfield. If you love white cabinets then consider painting them Ultra Pure White. White cabinets brighten any cooking space and this color is a perfect option.

This is a great color for all your trim in your home too and it looks amazing on furniture. Consider using Ultra Pure White on your cabinets, trim, walls, furniture, interior, and exterior. It also looks fabulous on the front doors.

Now keep in mind that this is a white-white color so if you want a little contrast and a warmer tone then try this next color.

.

Behr Cameo White

Julie Blanner used Cameo White in her guest bedroom and it is the perfect light warm yellow undertone. This warm Behr paint color makes the white-white bedding stand out but still gives the room that bright and light feeling.

Cameo White is the perfect color for the interior and exterior of your home. Consider using it on walls, furniture, and cabinets.

Behr Swiss Coffee

Did you know that Swiss Coffee is the most sold Behr paint color? The Style Bunch picked a great color to paint their breezeway. The texture on their siding makes this color look a little darker than it is in an example in my popular Behr paint colors post. It is much whiter on a flat wall.

Isn't this space gorgeous!! Swiss Coffee has beautiful gray undertones and looks so pretty with white.

What is the most popular Behr paint color

You can use Swiss Coffee anywhere. It looks fabulous on cabinets, walls, trim, furniture, interior, exterior, shutters, and front doors. There are so many great ways you can use this Behr white paint color.

If these Behr whites are quite what you're looking for, check out the round up I did of all the best Behr white paint colors.

Behr Black

Accent walls were made for black and Behr black is perfect. Look at this pretty room by Hickory Grove. After jazzing up this wall with trim and painting it black it transformed the whole bedroom. If you love dark colors but don't want to make the room feel small consider an accent wall.

Best Behr neutral paint color in black

Black pairs nicely with any neutral color scheme. Great places to use Behr black paint color is accent walls, trim, cabinets, furniture, the exterior of a house, shutters, and exterior doors.

Behr Graceful Grey

Grey is still a popular color and Behr Graceful Grey makes a cozy reading nook. We love how Leanna Ziegler Design used this light gray color and then created a design on the wall in a white-white color.

Favorite Behr paint color graceful gray

Graceful Grey is a great deal like white paint colors in that you can use it anywhere. It has cool undertones. I recommend using it on walls, cabinets, furniture, floors, exterior, shutters, and doors. It is also great as a transition paint color in halls and larger open spaces like the living room, family room, kitchen and dining room.

Behr Natural Gray

Another fabulous Behr grey paint color is natural gray. It is more of a medium undertone color and looks like a dark gray in a room that doesn't have a lot of natural light. This color is also on my popular paint colors list by Behr and Fallon at Fallon's Homestead used it in a gorgeous way on the wall going up the stairs.

This cool neutral color looks great on walls both interior and exterior. It is great for cabinets, furniture, shutters, and your front door. It is one of those perfect paint colors that match almost everything.

Behr Antique White

Probably one of the most timeless Behr paint colors is Antique White. Another soft Behr paint color in a bedroom by Simply Vintage Decor. Just like Cameo White, this is color has warm undertones but very light and gives a nice contrast with white. The color and accessories make this bedroom look dreamy.

Bedroom painted in Behr Antique white

Now let's talk about places to use Antique White colors. The best place to use it on interior and exterior walls. Because it is a light color it works just about anywhere but I particularly like it on walls.

Conclusion

Neutral Behr paint colors are so easy to use and they are a safe option if picking paint colors is hard for you. If a painter or contractor says you have to pick one color for your interior walls then any of these colours work except for black. Unless you want to live in a cave. LOL!

Now keep in mind that when picking white colors there are warm colors and cool colors. Depending on the look and feel you want depends on the color. If you want a warm glow in your space then use a color like Cameo. But if you do not like yellow undertones then go with a cool color.

Last, also consider the lighting in your room. If you have warm light bulbs they will add a warm tone to your painted walls, trim, and everything. If you have cool light bulbs then they will bring more true color to your paint. You can find this information on the box of the light bulbs.

Now that you have the best neutral paint colors look at where to buy Behr paint colors. Home Depot carries Behr but if you don't have a Home Depot near you there are other options.

Good luck with finding the right color for your home.

One of my favorite all times shows on television is This Old House and they knocked this kitchen renovation out of the park. If you are a lover of green then you will adore this Clary Sage SW 6178 paint color.

Look how soothing this color is on these kitchen cabinets. Green is such a great cool hue color and it matches so many things. Just look outside at nature and how well green goes with the blue sky, browns, and many other colors.

Acacia Haze SW 9132

When I came across this room and how Acacia Haze was used I couldn't wait to share. This color is listed on Sherwin William's color trend chart. I only heard this color mentioned once but I couldn't resist sharing it here.

Krafted Renovations did a beautiful job using this light green color by Sherwin Williams in this dining room. They used it on the lower half of the wall and on the ceiling.

There are so many ways you can use this color but using it the way they did looks amazing! Even though they didn't have a chair rail that didn't stop them from painting halfway.

If you like Acacia Haze then you will most likely like Sea Salt which is our next light green color.

Sea Salt SW 6204

This color is in the top ten most popular Sherwin Williams paint colors. In fact, it is so trendy until we wrote a whole post featuring examples of using Sherwin Williams sea salt and Sand and Sisal was one.

Sea Salt is a very light green color with gray undertones and in some lights has blue undertones. It is a beautiful neutral color to use in any room of your home. Sand and Sisal use this color in her living room.

Now that we have covered the light green paint colors let's look at the dark green colors.

Evergreen Fog SW 9130

If you're wrestling over which green paint to settle on, you can't get much better than the January 2022 Color of the Month from Sherwin Williams, Evergreen Fog. This warm color pairs great with another popular Sherwin Williams white paint color, Shoji SW 7042. The two fall in the greige color family.

Laurie, from Come on in Designs has done a beautiful job styling this room. The shiplap accent wall ties in lovely with her bedding and the black hexagon lined pattern.

Escape Gray SW 6185

When we gave my daughter's room a makeover, we were looking for the perfect paint to tie in the accents on the bedding. We browsed through the popular Sherwin Williams green paint colors and came across Escape Gray SW 6185 and knew it was the perfect fit.

This paint might have gray in the name, but make no mistake there are green undertones throughout. It pulled together everything in her Antique Vintage Aesthetic Bedroom.

Best Sherwin William Dark Green Colors

Now let's move to the dark green paint colors by Sherwin Williams. Dark greens are rich in tone and give a feeling of nature and wealth. These colors look amazing on cabinets, front doors, shutters, and accent walls. Here are great ways to use these popular dark green colors.

Ripe Olive SW 6209

Best Sherwin Williams green paint color Ripe Olive on kitchen cabinets

Ripe Olive is one of Sherwin William's color trend colors so I was not surprised when I came across many rooms using this color. This dark color has a warm gray undertone and is overall a favorite color.

Savas Construction captured a beautiful modern farmhouse feeling by painting ripe olive on these cabinets and kitchen islands. The contrast of the white countertops is gorgeous.

Great ways to use this olive green color are on front doors, shutters, accent walls, under the chair rails, trim, and cabinets. You can use a dark green color on interior walls but you will need much natural light to keep it feeling like a cave unless it is your media room.

Pewter Green SW 6208

Brie Builds also used a paint color from Sherwin William's color trends chart. Pewter Green looks so pretty in this laundry room and it goes well with this arts and crafts style wallpaper. I love how they painted it on the beadboard and used white on the cabinet as a contrast.

Laundry rooms are many times looked over when it comes to decorating so I wrote a post featuring farmhouse laundry room decor ideas. It is a great place to start if you are considering making your laundry room a dreamy place like Brianne.

Isle of Pines SW 6461

Isle of Pine was brought up the most as a dark green when I called stores throughout America. I saw so many different ways to use this color but when I came across this photo pinned by Sherwin Williams I couldn't resist sharing.

Look at how the pretty Isle of Pine is paired with all these maps. It is a great wall color that also would look good in a home office, child's room, on cabinets, or accent walls. Something about this color made me think of an old green chalkboard.

Cascades SW 7623

If you're looking for a Sherwin Williams green paint color that will help you with a statement piece in any room we have you covered. Cascades SW 7623 is what Maureen Lindstrom Designs used on her oversized kitchen islands and it makes a stunning statement in this kitchen.

Cascades is a timeless color that has also been featured as a color of the month for Sherwin Williams. It partners well with white cabinets in this kitchen and if you need help picking the right white, hop over to our Best Sherwin Williams White for Cabinets post.

Greens SW 6748

I love the story my friend Alieta Casey tells of this piece. She bought it and gave it a new life with a gorgeous green paint color. The jewel tone is Sherwin Williams Greens SW 6748. Some ladies would much rather have a breathtaking Emerald piece of furniture over a piece of jewelry.

The assumption when Alieta bought this dresser, was that she would paint it a shade of gray and while that wouldn't have been wrong, this green color gives the piece so much personality.

Rosemary SW 6187

Sherwin Williams Rosemary SW 6187 is what Kendi Everyday painted her kitchen cabinetry and island. This warm color looks like you picked a sprig of fresh rosemary. A perfect color for a kitchen, but the opportunities for where you could paint this striking green paint.

Gold and black accents match this paint color with ease. Paired with wood flooring, Rosemary green gives off a great earthy feel to the room.

Shade Grown SW 6188

This lovely accent wall not only has a fun pattern with wainscoting, it is also a fantastic deep green called Shade Grown SW 6188. The green is easily one of the Popular Sherwin Williams green colors because of the bold statement it makes. The team over at Brothers Painting & Renovation made a wise choice when they went with this paint color option.

It fits in a neutral category and could be made masculine by pairing it with blacks, whites and woods. Or you could give it a feminine feel by adding a touch of pink in the room. Either way, the possibilities are endless with this green paint color.

Favorite Green Paint Colors

In my search for the best green paint colors, I came across a few similar colors that are popular in certain areas of the country or ones I fell in love with that are not Sherwin Williams colors. They are so pretty until I couldn't resist sharing them. Marian with Miss Mustard Seed is one of those colors.

Miss Mustard Seed Boxwood

Boxwood is a perfect color for all farmhouse lovers. It is a gorgeous hue on the color palette and might be the right color for you. But where do you purchase Boxwood?

Popular green paint colors including Miss Mustard Seed boxwood green.

She is the founder of Miss Mustard Seed milk paint. I have a simple tutorial on how to paint with milk paint if you would like to know more about milk paint. But for now, let's talk about this gorgeous shade of green that is called Boxwood in the milk paint line.

The cool thing about Boxwood is that Marian included the formula in her blog post in case you want to have Sherwin Williams mix it. There is a photo of the formula on the can of paint she had mixed in her blog post called Boxwood Recipe and Glass Hardware.

Now let's look at another fun discovery I found when I talked to a Sherwin Williams employee in Nashville.

Belle Meade Green

Best Sherwin Williams custom paint color Belle Meade

Another custom color that I came across while doing my research is Belle Meade Green in Nashville. Now if you go to a Sherwin Williams paint store and ask for this color they will most likely say it doesn't exist. But if you contact the Nashville Sherwin Williams on Heady Drive they have the formula.

This green is a fantastic color for shutters or front doors which is why I couldn't wait to share with you this beautiful photo by The Potted Boxwood. This dark green pairs nicely with white on this home. Belle Meade green also would make a wonderful accent wall.

It is a classic timeless color and the local Nashville people seem to be very fond of it and I can see why. If you want a unique custom Sherwin Williams color that only you will have in your neighborhood then this might be your shade of green. Unless you live in the Nashville area then you will be trending if you use this color.

Benjamin Moore Essex Green

Years ago jewel tones were popular and hunter green was the coveted color. I used Benjamin Moore Essex Green many times on the interior and exterior of the home. Since dark greens are making a come back I couldn't leave out this classic green color by Benjamin Moore.

Recently while visiting The Grove Museum in Tallahassee, Florida I saw these shutters and it reminded me of Essex Green. The Grove Plantation or also known as the Call/Collins house is next to the Governor's Mansion. The Grove was the home of territorial governor Richard Keith Call who built it in 1840 and later Governor LeRoy Collins. Today it has been restored and made into a museum.

The Grove Museum with Essex Green painted shutters

I wouldn't be surprised if this color is still on the popular paint colors list of BM. It is so green until it looks black. It is great neutral paint color. My favorite place to use it was on a front door and shutters but people used it on accent walls, under chair rails, cabinets, and even a trim color.

Behr Vine Leaf N 400-7

Do you want to know what prompted my search for Sherwin William's trending green colors? Well, it all started here in my daughter's mudroom laundry room.

We love to do projects together when I come to visit and usually she goes for white or light neutral colors but this visit she surprised me with green.

Popular Behr green paint color Vine Leaf

In her mudroom, we built a floating shelf unit to bring style and organization to this entryway from her garage. This mudroom storage unit acts as an accent wall too. It is stylish yet functional. Directions on this DIY mudroom storage unit are in the post.

If you are looking for a darker tone green Behr paint Vine Leaf is a great color to consider. My son-in-law said it reminds him of their school colors so it would make a great game room color too.

Conclusion

There is one thing I noticed while writing this post on popular Sherwin Williams green paint colors. Light and dark green paint colors look amazing with any wood tones. Look back at all the photos at the natural wood in each room. Notice the wood beams in the dining room with Acacia Haze on the ceiling or how about the wood mantle top next to Sea Salt.

Remember me talking about how green colors give a feeling of nature? Well, this is probably why green and natural woods look so amazing together. I mean if God paired wood and green together then why can't we.

So what is your favorite green colors and where are you considering paint it it inside or outside of your home?

Happy Decorating!

HOW TO PAINT WITH MILK PAINT

How to paint with milk paint is much easier than it looks.

There are so many milk paint brands out in the world, but I like Miss Mustard Seed's paint over others.  I will share more about why I think it is the best milk paint brand on the market at the bottom of this post.

Update: Three years have passed since I painted this chair and the finish has not chipped and still looks beautiful.

Her paint has a long shelf life because it comes in natural paint powder form and is nontoxic. And her milk paint colors are AMAZING! There is a variety of colors to choose from that create that farmhouse vibe. Make sure to store this powder form paint at room temperature.

Check out this roundup we did of furniture transformed with Miss Mustard Seed milk paint colors for some great ideas.

But instead of me trying to convince you about MMS paint follow along as I take you through a tutorial on how to paint with milk paint.

WINDSOR CHAIR STORY

Long before I decided to try out natural paint, I found this beat-up Windsor chair on the side of the road along with its twin sister.  One chair gave its life for the other by giving up some of its parts to make the other one whole.

So now it is going to get a natural paint transformation and here are the steps, so you too can transform a piece of furniture with milk paint.

Black windsor chair that was repaired and ready to be painted with Miss Mustard Seed Paint.

1. SANDING THE CHAIR

The old finish on this chair is not level and needs a little prep work. If your old furniture is like mine start with sanding.  I like to use180-200 grit sandpaper on a sponge block.  A sponge block allows the sandpaper to mold around the edges.  And boy, there are many edges on a Windsor chair.

The most important thing is to sand any areas where the paint is coming up.  Make sure to get the area smooth.  I like to run my hand across it and feel it to see if it is smooth after I sand it.  It helps me to determine if I have it level.

Prepping a painted Windsor chair with a sandpaper block in this how to paint with milk paint tutorial

2. WIPING OFF THE GRIT FROM THE SANDPAPER

Now the next step is relatively easy. Just dampen a paper towel and wipe down the chair.  Make sure the paper towel is barely damp.

Also, if your chair is dirty go ahead and give it a washing.  Then let it dry real good before the next step.

3. PRIMER

In the world of milk paint, you do not always have to do prep work or use primer, but in my case, this chair's existing finish was peeling and shiny.  It was recommended to me by Jennifer at Eight Hundred Furniture to add in a primer step.

I am so glad she recommended this because not only did it help the paint adhere to the chair but the primer helped block the black color from running through the natural paint.

So if you need a primer to consider look at Kilz 2 or Extreme Bond Primer by Sherwin Williams, I have to say the Extreme Bond Primer worked like a charm.

How to paint with milk paint over a painted chair using extreme bond primer by Sherwin Williams

Because this chair is black and milk paint is thin, you will probably need to add two coats of primer.

4. MIXING MILK PAINT

Before we dive into mixing the paint, you're probably asking where to buy milk paint?  Well, you can purchase it on Amazon or go to Miss Mustard Seeds Website to find a list of retailers that might be close to you.

Okay, so now on to mixing the paint.  Remember me saying that MMS paint has a long shelf life. Well, it comes in powder form, so you need to mix it.  But please don't procrastinate on this step because it is super, super easy.

For my chair, I mixed a 1/4 cup of Ironstone milk powder, 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of bonding agent.

How to mix Miss Mustard Seed milk paint

Start mixing the milk powder and a small amount of water first and as you stir keep adding water.  Give it a good stir until you feel like all the clumps have dissolved.  Then add your bonding agent.  It is kind of like a runny glue and mixes in very easily.

See learning how to paint with natural paint is pretty easy.

How to mix Miss Mustard Seed milk paint

Now let the paint sit for about 5 minutes.  The paint sitting helps it to thicken a little, and now you are ready to paint.

5. PAINTING WITH MILK PAINT

Painting the natural paint was a little more tricky than expected.  For the first coat of paint lightly add some paint to the end of your brush and tap it on the edge of the cup to move the paint downward.

Then apply it to the chair working from the top and moving your way down.  Make sure to check for drips as you go.  I worked on the drips with a dryer brush.

Natural paint is pretty forgiving so if you miss a drip go back over it with no problem.  However, if you let the drip sit too long, it will want to stay for a while.  So continually give all the edges a good look for those pesky drips.

Also, keep your stir stick in the cup while you are painting and stir it now and then to keep it blended.

Another detail I want to share is the brush I used.  For the primer, I used the cheap wood handle brush.  But for the paint, I went with the short handle Wooster synthetic brush.  I found it help onto the paint easier and moved the paint onto the chair nicely.

6. ONE COAT OF MILK PAINT

Here is an example of how one coat of Ironstone paint looks.  It is a lovely matte finish. As you can see I need to add another layer.

Natural milk paint showing the first layer of primer

7. SECOND COAT OF MILK PAINT

Now add another coat of paint after letting the first coat dry for an hour or so.  It doesn't take long for the paint to dry so you can add another layer.  Here is a photo of the second coat and honestly I think it dries less and less transparent.  How to paint with milk paint is truly so easy!

How to paint with milk paint showing the second layer of milk paint

8. Apply Top Coat (optional)

After you finish you can add a top coat of furniture wax or tough coat liquid form in a thin layer. This will give it a harder smooth finish and make the chair more water-resistant. The more thin layers you add the tougher the finish.

I added the tough coat to my chair. Tough Coat is a much harder finish and is even more durable. I love this tough coat product because it is self-leveling and non-yellowing.

Once I added this top coat I let it dry for 24 hours before I sat anything on the piece of furniture.

FINISHED PRODUCT

I have to say I have fallen in love with the Miss Mustard Seed milk paint.  Teaching you all how to paint with milk paint was so easy thanks to Jennifer and Miss Mustard Seeds videos on YouTube.

How to paint with milk paint showing the second layer of milk paint

I cannot get over how beautiful this chair is now.

How to paint with natural paint revealing the finished beautiful ironstone white windsor chair using Miss Mustard Seed milk paint

The natural paint color we used is Ironstone.  It is a beautiful creamy white!

The chair is so pretty until all I wanted to do was style it instead of sitting in it.  Just happens I got this candle and pillow recently so I think it has found a new home for a while until the chair will end up at my daughters' desk.

How to paint with milk paint tutorial. Photo styled with Antique Candle Works candle, and so the adventure begins pillow, currier and ives cup and saucer and blue and white stripe dish towel

Last I said I would share more about this wonderful paint. Here are common questions I get about milk paint.

What ingredients are in milk paint?

The main ingredients in milk paint consist of milk protein, lime (calcium carbonate), pigments (pigment powders), and borax as a preservative but Miss Mustard Seed's milk paint has natural ingredients of milk protein, chalk, clay, limestone, and natural pigments. Her paint is true natural paint and has a very long shelf life because it comes in powder form. Milk paints are generally non-toxic but check your ingredients just in case.

What is easier to use milk paint or chalk paint?

Chalk paint is easier to use because you don't have to mix it and it has self-leveling qualities. However, milk paint gives a gorgeous finish and is much easier to get a farmhouse chippy look. I recommend making sure your surface is sanded smooth first and primed if you use natural paint.

If you want to learn more about chalk paint try my how to paint with chalk paint post. And if you are looking for more farmhouse paint colors try these paint colors at Life on Summerhill.

Is milk paint good for furniture?

Milk paint is great for furniture. You can paint it directly on raw wood or over a painted finish. I do recommend sanding and priming first to get a more flawless finish but if you are wanting an aged look skip the sanding and primer. Milk paint furniture gives the most beautiful look!

CONCLUSION

Overall I highly recommend the Miss Mustard Seed's milk paint.  There are many beautiful paint colors to choose from like Eulalie's Sky, French Enamel, Layla's Mint, and Aviary.  I have not tried other milkpaint brands, but MMS seems to be of good quality and I have heard General Finishes milk paint is good too. And it's the best milk paint furniture brand.

Milk paint furniture using Miss Mustard Seed paints and other products

MILK PAINT FURNITURE PAINTING TIPS

I did run out of paint towards the end.  I grabbed a tablespoon of powder, water and bonding agent and mixed up some more right in the jar I was using.

Also, let me encourage you to put the piece of furniture on a table.  It saves your back and because the chair is elevated it is easier to see the drips.

And last, don't forget a drop cloth.  You will for sure need it for this project because this paint is drippy.  Or at least my paint was drippy.  Haha!

Here is a recap of the steps on how to paint with milk paint over a painted piece of furniture.

  • Begin by sanding over the existing paint.  Paint carefully in areas where the existing paint is coming up
  • Remove dust from sanding with a damp paper towel or tack cloth (clean the chair if needed at this step)
  • Brush on primer starting at the top and move your way down
  • Add another coat of primer if the first coat of milk paint doesn't cover well
  • Mix paint and add the bonding agent
  • Brush first layer milk paint onto chair working from the top and move down (watch for drips)
  • Brush the second layer of milk paint if needed.  Most likely you will need two unless you like the look

I hope you have enjoyed this DIY and I hope you try out milk-paint to get that delicious vintage painted look. What are you considering painting?

Since this post went live we have lived with our natural painted chair for a while now.  The paint has stayed on the piece of furniture beautifully.  I have no complaints and only good things to say about MMS paint.  I do believe it is the best milk paint brand.

Happy Decorating!

SHERWIN WILLIAMS FIRST STAR 7646

Sherwin Williams kitchen cabinet paint color First Star in farmhouse kitchen

Here at Life on Summerhill, we recently painted our stained cabinets. The paint color we chose was Sherwin Williams First Star.

When I started looking for a paint color I knew I wanted a white color but I also had white countertops, white subway tile backsplash and white appliance. Needless to say I already had a lot of white going on.

To combate all the white I first thought I would use repose gray but when the color came in it was to dark to call it white cabinets. So I worked with Sherwin Williams to cut the color until I got it just like I wanted it. But when I pulled my SW paint chips out I discovered that Sherwin Williams already had a white-gray called First Star.

Well, the story gets even more interesting because when I started doing my research for the most popular paint color of 2021 guess who showed up on the list. That's right–First Star.

First star is a cool white with almost equal amounts of red and green so it doesn't read warm or cool. As you can tell from the photo it is the lightest tone on the value scale but not quite white. It offers a tiny bit of contrast with white which worked nicely in this kitchen which already had lots of white.

Other paint colors in our kitchen are in paint colors at Life on Summerhill.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS GRAY CLOUDS SW 7658

Andi Telker at KC Home Report painted built in cabinets Sherwin Williams Gray Clouds. What could be everyday cabinetry becomes an outstanding featured when painted the right color.

Gray Clouds is a warm color with beige undertones. It's the definition of greige.

This paint color easily becomes sophisticated with gold accents lights and decor pieces.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS LIGHT FRENCH GRAY SW 0055

Custom cabinetry looks amazing painted in Sherwin Williams Light French Gray. This is a cool gray color and looks sweet as trim around glass cabinet doors one painted fully on a drawer.

The Cruz Residence has pulled together a charming kitchen with grey cabinets and subway tile. If you're trying to chose a gray paint color for your shaker cabinet doors, their's shows off what Light French Gray would look like. It's simply alluring.

Still trying to figure out what Sherwin Williams grey cabinet colors might be the fit for the job you have in mind? Take a look at Jayme Fridley's amazing butler's pantry. She has painted the cabinets and shelving Sherwin Williams Amazing Gray.

This neutral paint color falls under the warmer tone category with tan and green undertones. It pairs well with Alabaster or Shoji White.

Every year paint companies and color experts pick out a paint color of the year.  2021 was nurturing nature inspired colours but the color of the year 2022 is all out green.  See what colors I think will be trending and be inspired to add some to your home.

paint color of the year from color experts

New year, new color! The new year is a great time for new beginnings. One of my favorite things to do each year is searching for the color of the year selections.  It is a great way to see where our hues are taking us.   The color of the year 2022 is very similar for each company.

Most of the time the colors are spot-on, at least from my perspective, but then there are colors that I think to myself where did that come from. Let me know what you think of this year's color trends.

Paint Color of the Year 2022

This year I can easily see myself recommending some of the colors, and there are other colors that I have been trying to figure out a way to blend into our modern farmhouse decor style. Let's go on a journey and look at each company's 2022 paint colors.

Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog SW 9130

Sherwin Williams is opening the door in 2022 with another earth tone color. 2021 was a deep dark color called Urban Bronze SW 7048. This year it is a gorgeous shade of green called Evergreen Fog SW 9130.

This color can be used anywhere in your home. It would look great on a front door, walls, and furniture.

Now compare last year's color Urban Bronze. Look at how beautiful this color looks on an accent wall. It works with almost every design style.

For two years now Sherwin Williams is seeing a forecast of earth tones. The trendy colors they are recommending are winners in my book.

I have been writing about these colors of the year for four years now and I love how you can see the transition from one year to the other. I find it interesting that Sherwin Williams went from Naval SW 6244 in 2020 to these earth tone colors.

Naval is said to be a rich navy that creates a calm and grounding environment. A tone that will warm up any room.

If you love the color, this is an excellent choice for your walls, door, cabinetry, and so on.  But if you are more of a neutral person, then I would recommend using it as an accent.

Cavern Clay SW 7701 was Sherwin William's color of the year for 2019. A color that would warm up any room. I love this color for a home office or dining room.

Benjamin Moore October Mist 1495

Last year I was so excited about Benjamin Moore's color but this year they made a great choice again with October Mist 1495. Look at this color's soft and relaxing hues. It is a great color.

This color will look great in a laundry room, accent wall, bedroom, or front door to name a few. This soothing green will be a family favorite. Now let's look back over the years to see Benjamin Moore's colors.

Here is Benjamin Moore's 2021 color of the year. Aegean Teal is so pretty! Just like Sherwin Williams, I think Benjamin Moore has knocked it out of the park.

Aegean Teal 2136-40 is a medium tone blue green color that will look amazing in many places. This is a fabulous color for a front door, cabinetry, furniture, and walls, especially accent walls.

This is the perfect color to remind you of a gorgeous sunrise or sunset. Who wouldn't love to bring that indoors?

First Light is perfect on walls, doors, furniture, and accessories.

Benjamin Moore AC 690 Metropolitan, their color of 2019, is still a color that is trending right now. It is a great color for accent walls and cabinets. It pairs great with natural materials.

Behr Breezeway

Behr releases another green color but this one has bright and cheery written all over it. Meet Breezeway a lovely paint color that I think will love lovely in a coastal home.

Behr color of the year

Behr 2021 color of the year was Canyon Dusk S210-4. This gentle-toned color is such a beautiful color! Warm neutrals have a calming effect. Doesn't it just look amazing in this bathroom?

This lovely earthy terracotta color can be used for just about anything. Office, kitchen, bathroom, you name it! A warm hue that's incredibly versatile. Behr hit it spot on for a perfect summer color!

In 2020 Behr used an earth tone color called Back to Nature S340-4.

Back to Nature is a color that does just that and is a beautiful color for outdoors, but would look amazing inside your home too.

This is a color that would look great in your office, on your cabinets, in your living room, or bedroom but we love it on this door!

It's a subtle color that doesn't steal the show, but would be a great accent color. If you love green colors and would like more ideas try these popular Sherwin Williams green paint colors. Now let's look at Behr paints color from 2019.

Blueprint S470-5 is a warm denim mid-range hue and was Behr's color of the year for 2019.  The perfect accent wall color or cabinetry.

The color Transcend PPG1079-4 is a midtone, shaded, brown sugar beige with a gingerbread undertone. It is perfect if you want to add warmth to a room.

Dunn Edwards released their 2022 color of the year and it is right in there with all the other nature-inspired colors except this one is not green. Welcome this gorgeous brown tone called Arts and Craft DET682. This versatile shade brings warmth to your home and will complement most interior design trends.

This color reminds me of Sherwin William's 2021 color of the year. The moody warm tone will look amazing as an accent wall, all walls in a room, trim, and doors.

Their 2021 color of the year is Wild Blue Yonder DE5855. It brings the bright skies indoors. This light and airy pale blue is gorgeous!

What a clean color this is. If you're tired of white, but don't want a bold color in your home, then Fresh Mint is a beautiful option.

This is a perfect color to lighten a room that doesn't have any natural light coming in.

There are so many options of where you could incorporate this color in your home. Anywhere from your kitchen walls, to your bathroom, to your outdoor patio. This green tone brings the sunshine indoors.

Fresh mint is a breath of fresh air for your home.

Conclusion

Colors of the year are a great way to get new design ideas. Overall, I think all the paint companies and experts have given us great color options. Mostly leaning to natural greens, there are various ways to give your home a new look. Maybe it's time to change up your home's color scheme? The current trends contain wonderful choices from neutrals colors to bright colors that will reflect your personal style.

What is your favorite color and where would you use it?

I am toying with the thought of painting a door which is what I did several years ago when I painted my front door Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue. Changing your front door's color can give your home a new look in not much time.

I fell in love with that color then so you never know if you will fall in love with one of these colors now.

What color choices do you predict will be popular next year?

Happy Decorating!
