Centerpiece
This centerpiece is broken up into two sections and flanks the lazy susan in the middle which is where all the food sits. We will talk about the lazy susan later.
But the cool thing about these centerpieces is that they are functional. Not only do they look pretty but they play a part in the dinner.
The dollar store has the cutest glass wine shaped bottles with a snap down sealed top. Fill them with your favorite beverage or in our case some good old fashion sweet tea.
Next purchase some glass jars and place tapered candles in the top. Put one candle by the tea jar then place some flowers, greenery, and pumpkins.
Because I went with some pink in my fall bicycle wreath this year I decided to repeat the pink on the table and luckily I had some flowers leftover.
Good designs are in the details like these pink and white small pumpkins. I love the look of inexpensive dollar store painted pumpkins!
Grab four or five small pumpkins from the Dollar Tree while you are there and paint them with some primer and then some acrylic paint. To keep from painting the stem simply pull it up a little and paint under it and then pop it back down. Not all stems are moveable but many can be moved.
Large Chalkboard Lazy Susan
Now let's talk about the large chalkboard lazy susan in the middle of the table. This lazy susan is inspired by a grain cloth pattern. But before we talk about how I painted it let me share that it is 24″ wide.
Whoa! That is a big lazy susan but isn't it amazing!
So here is how I made this large chalkboard lazy susan. First, I purchased a smaller lazy susan that was inexpensive. Then I picked up a round piece of wood from Home Depot.
Next, I simply glued the two together, primed and painted the top white. Then I used painters tape to tape off the lines and painted them green.
You can paint the lines any color like blue, grey, black or green. Think about your overall table design and select a color that will coordinate nicely.
Last I put a layer of clear chalkboard paint on the top.
For more details on how to make this oversized chalkboard lazy susan check out my post on Hometalk. There is a video too. 🙂

Place Settings
Now let's talk about the place settings. Search for one item that is small enough to fit in each plate. Make sure the item fits into your style and color scheme.
For this table, I found these cute wooden market signs at the dollar spot at Target. They had that green distressed look to them just like the lazy susan.
Now simply start designing your place setting from this little decorative piece. Layer some dishes and add a kitchen towel, cloth napkin or anything that will drape down the table. These dish towels also came from the dollar spot at Target.
Last, sit your place setting on a charger or placemat. This white charger was originally gold from the Dollar Tree. I simply roughed it with a sanding block and painted it with chalk paint.
Use one coat of chalk paint and make it a little streaky. Again we are keeping it slightly distressed. If you would like more information about chalk painting check out my how to paint with chalk paint post.
Now add your glasses and silverware and you are ready for guests.
You might notice that this dish towel is different in this photo. The dishtowels came in sets of two so I alternated them around the table.
After the party is over I let each guest take their dish towel and market sign home. It is a party favor or thank you gift for guests.
Conclusion
Yay! Your tablescape is all finished and you didn't have to spend a fortune.
Here are a few more thoughts about the evening. The lazy susan was so functional and pretty on the table. The food looked amazing sitting in the middle and being able to write on the chalkboard made it even more special.
Don't forget to write on the lazy susan each food item. And just before the guests arrive for dinner light the candles.
Everything is going to look amazing!
Simply take each step from this post and think about a few key items to build everything off of. For example, look for the place setting decorative piece and then design your color scheme from there.
Finding the glasses, flowers and such will be the easy part.
Another tip is to start designing the table a week ahead. Make everything two days before and set the table the day before. If you follow this schedule then all you have to think about is food the day of the event.
I hope these tips help you create a beautiful dinner table. For more holiday ideas check out this farmhouse Thanksgiving dinner table ideas and Friendsgiving table settings that will warm your guest's hearts.
Happy Decorating!
