Every holiday or season I change out my wreath on my front door and many people ask how to hang a wreath with ribbon. So here is my trick on how to hang a wreath on a door without damaging it.
For many years I've hung my wreaths with the traditional metal hanger. It looked good but I always thought a pretty ribbon would look better.
So I did some research on how to hang a wreath with ribbon during Christmas and shared my Christmas decorating ideas for porches and people asked how I hung my wreath.
So here are the steps on how to hang a wreath on a glass door, metal door, wood door, or just about any door with a ribbon without damaging the door.

How to Hang a Wreath with Ribbon
To start your wreath hanging project begin by collecting some supplies.
- Wreath
- Ladder or stool
- Command designer hooks
- 48″ of 1 1/2″ or 2″ ribbon (match the ribbon to your wreath)
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Tape measure
Install Command Strip
Begin by putting your stool behind the door. Find the center of your door at the top and make a pencil mark. Then attach your command hook upside down at the top of the door.
Here is what it will look like once you have installed the command hook. Mine has been here since the last project so do not let the ribbon in my hand confuse you.
Measure Ribbon
Next, measure out the ribbon to 48″ or longer. Cut the ribbon and fold the ribbon in half to find the center.
Now hold your fingers on the center and thread the ribbon through the wreath like in the photo below.
Place Wreath on Door
Next, take the wreath to the door and open the door. Place the wreath on the outside of the door and stand on the ladder, stool or chair on the inside.
Next position the wreath to where you want it to hang on the door. Here is where I placed my wreath.
I like for the center of my wreath to hang a little above the center of my window. But traditionally you want your wreath to hang eye level.
Tie the Ribbon
Close your door while still holding the ribbon. Now spread the two ribbon pieces apart on each side of the command hook.
Next start tying the ribbon-like you do shoelaces. Loop one side around the other and pull it tight under the hook.
Now simply tie the next step like you would when tying a shoelace.
After you have tied your ribbon into a bow spread out and fluff your ribbon ears.
And you are all finished. Now you know how to hang a wreath with ribbon without damaging your door.
I also share how to hang a wreaths on windows where you do not see nails, command hooks or anything.
