Let's talk about how to decorate a small bath into a white farmhouse bathroom style. We transformed this narrow plain space into a bright happy modern small farmhouse bathroom.

White farmhouse bathroom renovation

Believe it or not, bathrooms are fun to redesign and this white farmhouse bathroom is one of my favorites. This small space belongs to my niece. While visiting we spontaneously decided to redecorate the hall bathroom.

There were a few things that needed fixing in this bath so before we could put pretty farm decor on the wall we had to pick out a paint color and solve a few problems like a mirror.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

White Farmhouse Bathroom

Whenever I start redesigning or decorating any room I start with an inspiration piece. That might be a photo from Pinterest, a piece of art, or a rug. For this bathroom, my niece showed me photos of white bathrooms on Pinterest. We talked about what she likes and what she could live with.

Before we knew it she wanted a brighter bathroom with a white theme but keep the warm wood tones of the vanity. Her focus was modern farmhouse-style bathrooms. Now that we know the style we had to fix a few problems like the mirror and light.

Corner Vanity Mirror DIY

Smaller bathrooms can instantly look larger if you add a large mirror. For this corner, a wrap-around mirror would be perfect. This is such a good idea for any tiny bath.

Next, let's talk about how to make a corner vanity bathroom mirror. To begin we needed to build out the corner so there would be a center mirror because when someone stands in front of the sink they need to see into a mirror instead of a crease made from where the vanity mirrors would come together.

Corner bathroom vanity mirror DIY

Basically, we cut pieces of wood into triangles and screwed them into the wall behind it.

Small farmhouse white bathroom vanity mirror

Next, we glued all the mirrors to the wall and the triangle blocks in the corner. Lucky for us we had a white chair rail for a backsplash so the mirrors sat on the trim and we used mirror clips on the top while the glue was drying. We removed the clips after the glue dried.

Now that we solved the mirror problem let's paint the small bathroom a popular choice called Sherwin Wiliams alabaster white.

Sherwin Williams Alabaster White Bathroom

Probably the easiest decision we have made yet is the paint color. A white color scheme will liven up the small farmhouse space. For our project, we painted everything. The trim, walls, doors, and all the trim are alabaster white.

Small white farmhouse bathroom

The easiest paint projects are when everything is the same color. Not nearly as much cutting in with the paint to get a straight line.

Consider a light color when figuring out your color scheme for your bathroom. A lighter color makes a small room feel larger and for the bathroom, the white color makes preparing makeup and dressing much better.

.

Small Bathroom Storage Solutions

Our next problem to solve is the lack of storage. Since all she has is the vanity we needed somewhere to store towels and toilet paper. She needed more storage space.

When you walk into the bathroom there is the perfect spot for a small cabinet that is easy access. We found this adorable distressed white piece of furniture. Having a piece of furniture that sits off the floor, meaning it has feet, allows light to travel under it and makes it feel less cluttered.

Not only is the cabinet solving our organizing problem but it is a classic look when you are coming down the hall. And a great focal point for the bath.

White farmstyle bathroom remodel

Inside the cabinet are some of our bathroom necessities — stacked towels, a fabric basket to hold the toilet paper, and a metal basket to hold hairbrushes, and hair bands. Great ideas for storage are baskets because it keeps things more organized. You can use wicker baskets and clear plastic too.

Bathroom storage idea

The next problem we had was the light so let's look at how we went from one light on one of the walls to a central pendant.

Corner Mirror Bathroom Light

So many times when we look at a bathroom we think our lighting has to be on the wall. But don't forget you can drop lighting down from the ceiling or go with recessed light.

Originally in this bathroom, we had a wall-mounted light on one of the walls. It looks off-balance and once we added the angle for the mirror we knew we couldn't go back with the wall mount light. So, we opted for a pendant light.

Schoolhouse style light in a white farm style bath

If you have a corner mirror this is the best solution for lighting. It is very simple. Take a pendant light kit then add your favorite globe to it. We went with a white schoolhouse globe.

The vintage white glass is perfect for putting on makeup. It filters light beautifully and fans a smooth glow of lighting without shadows. Keep this in mind when choosing bathroom lighting because it makes for the best light to put on makeup.

Black Matte Bath Vanity Faucet

Next on our agenda is a new faucet and to make this a more modern farmhouse look we went with black. Black fixtures polish the look of any space. The matte black finish was just what the wood vanity and white countertop needed. It has a nice contrast to the vanity area. To repeat the black look we went with new black hardware.

Modern farmhouse white bathroom

Two knobs to replace the ones already there and a pull on the panel at the top that looks like a drawer. Adding that one pull gave the cabinet more pizzazz.

Now that our major problems are solved let's begin decorating this white farmhouse bathroom.

How to Decorate a Small Farmhouse White Bathroom

The fun part is decorating this adorable little farmhouse bathroom. Let's start with a shower curtain.

Buffalo Check Shower Curtain

If there is one thing that adds farmhouse charm it is buffalo check. Since we already had the nice grey rugs we decided to find a buffalo check shower curtain. To the internet, we went to find the exact shower curtain for our bathroom.

Buffalo check farmhouse style shower curtain

Modern Farmhouse Style Towel Bar

Since we have children using this bathroom and it is the guest bathroom a row of hooks would be the most functional. Plus here is another decoration that has farmhouse written all over it.

White farmhouse bathroom DIY

We put the hooks low enough for the little girls to be able to hang their towels. And since it is low we needed to add a decoration above it. So let's talk about wall art for tiny white farmhouse bathrooms.

Cozy Farmhouse Bathroom Wall Art

Choosing wall art for a small white bathroom is easy. Because the walls are white there are endless options for art. My niece loves greenery so we found this cute “forever grateful” piece of art for over the farmhouse cabinet. It adds nice visual interest to the powder room.

White farm style bathroom art

Next, we looked for something to go over the towel hooks. And we thought a wreath would be cute but instead of just a lambs ear wreath, we added this tobacco basket to give it more texture and color.

Farmhouse white bathroom wall decorations

Look for art that fits the farmhouse look. You can purchase vintage items at flea markets or shop at stores like Kirkland's and Hobby Lobby to name a few. Also, consider art that is no wider than your piece of furniture or towel bar.

Last, we added farmhouse decor to the cabinet, behind the toilet, and in the vanity area. Greenery will warm up any space. If you don't have a green thumb go with artificial plants. Other items to look for that fits the farmhouse look are lanterns, crocks, and wooden decorations like candle holders to name a few.

Farmhouse style bath remodel

During this project, my niece fell in love with Rae Dunn so we added liquid soap to her decorations. It fit in perfectly!

White farmhouse bathroom Rae Dunn

Guess what? We have finished redesigning this bathroom.

Conclusion

Decorating a small white farmhouse bathroom is actually pretty easy. The hardest part is if you have bigger projects like our mirror and light. So if you don't have any bigger projects then this project will be a breeze.

A tiny bathroom can easily be brightened up with white paint colors. Remember light colors always make a space feel more open and larger.

Also, remember if you purchase any furniture to make sure it has feet so light can travel under it. This will help it not feel crowded.

And last, be minimal on your decorations. I like to use larger pieces like our “grateful” sign and a few faux plants here and there.

Here is how the mirror turned out. The only way I could get a good shot was holding my camera right in the middle. LOL

Today we are talking about the best way to paint over wallpaper. If you dislike removing wallpaper as I do then you will be happy to know you can paint over wallpaper.
Paint over wallpaper with Sherwin Williams

So you are trying to decide if you should paint over or remove wallpaper. Let me assure you that you can paint over wallpaper and after working with Sherwin Williams I have great directions on the best way to paint over wallpaper.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning I receive a commission if you purchase using the links below at no extra cost to you. All opinions are all my own.

Best Way to Paint Over Wallpaper

Before we dive into the steps on how to paint over wallpaper lets see if your wallpaper is in a good place to be painted over.

Paint Over Wallpaper or Remove

There are a few important things to look for when considering painting over wallpaper. First is your paper good and secure to the wall?

Look over your wall covering carefully and see if it is glued down securely. Look at the joints to see if they are rolling back. If your paper is coming down then you might want to consider taking it down. Since it is coming down already it might very well come off easily.

Wallpapered bathroom

However, if your wallpaper is pretty secure and most the joints and edges are fastened then you are good to go on painting your wallpaper.

Second, is your wallpaper flat. Does it have an embossed or raised pattern? If your paper has a raised pattern then you will need to have it skimmed with sheetrock mud or remove the wallpaper otherwise you will see the pattern when you paint over it.

What is the Best Primer for Painting Over Wallpaper?

Oil-based is the best primer to paint over wallpaper. Oil-based primers are more durable and bond better for this type of project.

What kind of paint do you use to paint over wallpaper?

The best kind of paint to paint on wallpaper is an oil-based primer but once you have primed your wallpaper you can use pretty much use any kind of paint. I used Sherwin Williams Designer Edition interior latex to paint over the oil-based primer.

Emerald designer edition paint satin latex

Now that we have answered a few important questions let's look at what supplies you will need.

What you need to paint over Wallpaper

You will need some standard tools like what's in my paint crate and then a few extras.

Now that we have the ground work layed and you know what tools you will need to paint over wallpaper it is time to walk you through the steps.

Clean the Wallpaper

Grab a bucket and fill it with hot water from the tap then add about 1 part white distilled vinegar to 3 part water. So if your bucket holds 9 cups of water then you need 3 cups of distilled vinegar.

Take a clean rag and start wiping down the walls. If you have any stains and they are not coming off the wall you may need a degreaser. I recommend Krud Kutter. It works great to clean areas where you have been using air fresheners that may have gotten on the wall or body spray that has oil in them.

Wash wallpaper with vinegar and water

The main thing is to make sure everything is clean so the primer will bond nicely.

.

Repair Wallpaper

Since you just washed down all the walls you probably got a close up look at where any wallpaper has peeled away on joints and edges. You will need to make sure these areas that are unraveling are glued back down and this is where the caulk comes in.

Caulking down wallpaper before painting over wallpaper

Take the Shermax caulk and squeeze it into a crack behind the wallpaper and press the joint back together or down to the wall. I had to hold my finger of the joint for a minute until it stuck down on its own.

Once all the wallpaper is repaired it is time to paint the first coat of paint but I have a little trick to hide those joints.

Lattice Trim over Wallpaper Joints

I love trim! If you are a lover of trim too then you will love this optional idea. If you don't want to add trim over the joints you will need to skim the wall covering joints with spackle and then sand it. But I prefer this method.

Take some lattice trim which is so thin you don't have to remove any baseboards and cover all your joints with it.

This easy DIY farmhouse style wainscot is perfect for a cottage look.

Isn't this awesome! You get a custom trim look and hide the fact that you have painted over wallpaper.

Adding lattice trim to the joints of wallpaper

Because I didn't have crown mold I ran one row of lattice trim along the top of the wall and then ran vertical lines of lattice trim over all the joints. There were some wallpaper joints where it was in an inconvenient place like under where the towel bar goes.

So I left that joint open and used spackle to cover the joint. Simply use a putty knife to swipe the spackle over the joint being as neat as possible. Let it dry and sand it smooth.

Primer Painting over Vinyl Wallpaper

Next on the paint on top of wallpaper project is your first coat of paint which is an oil-based ProBlock primer by Sherwin Williams paint. This is some good stuff.

Cut into corners and along edges with an angled paintbrush then come behind that step by rolling the paint onto the wall. Painting a room is simple.

Primer coat of paint over wallpaper

Oil-based paint has a bonding and blocking ability that is amazing but not all primers are equal which is why I recommend ProBlock primer oil-based. This is an important step so do not skip it.

Also, here are a few more tips when dealing with oil-based paints. They do not clean up with soap and water so make sure you have drop cloths down on the floor, wear disposable gloves if you don't want to deal with clean up on your hands, use a roller that you don't mind trashing and use a paint tray liner so you can trash it when you are done.

If you do these tips then all you have to clean is the paintbrush unless you decide to trash it too. But don't let my tips scare you because I was nervous about using oil-based paint and it was super easy.

If you need to clean your brushes and other tools use mineral spirits. It works like a charm.

Paint with Latex Paint on Wallpaper

Now things are starting to get fun! Apply your latex paint just like you did the primer. A good quality one coat paint will make this your last step. Trust me it is worth paying extra to get one coat paint.

Priming wallpaper

I used the Emerald Designer Edition interior latex in satin. This paint applied like brushing butter on a piece of toast. As it dried it started leveling out beautifully which was magnificent over a few uneven spots.

Emerald Designer Edition Paint

Here are a few more details about this new paint that I thought you might like to know.

This paint comes in its own line of colors. You can see the colors on the Sherwin Williams website or go into the store and grab some of their pamphlets.

Emerald designer edition paint satin latex

So you are probably wondering what makes this paint different from Sherwin William's other paints. Well, the base on this paint is a much purer white base so it develops brighter, richer, and more intense colors.

You have to check out their colors. They are great if you want a farmhouse look. The color I used was Ghosted which is a pale gray more on the white side.

Accent Wall over Wallpaper

Now if you want an accent wall like in my bathroom all you need to do is grab a different color and paint. I used Interesting Aqua SW 6220 for my accent wall. If you have a small wall you can use a sample can of paint.

How to paint over wallpaper using primer, paint and lattice trim

Sample cans come in a satin finish so if you don't like your accent wall color you haven't invested a lot of money.

Once you have your accent wall painted you are all done. Yay!!!

Next add some accessories like this maiden hair fern plant by Studio McGee at Target.

Maiden hair fern plant in a wood pot sitting in a window seal

Glass apothecary jars.

Antique blue mason jar filled with cotton balls

A bench to hold towels or anything you might need while bathing and a medallion round bath mat.

Round bath mat with tassels and goodwill bench

And my favorite which is this wall mounted crock. I am so excited to fill it with fresh greenery every week.

Hanging crock on the wall filled with fresh eucalyptus

Conclusion

Now you may be asking yourself if you can do this in your bathroom, kitchen, entryway, bedroom or any room and the answer is yes. You can paint over wallpaper in any room.

Did I just make your day?

Here is a before and after so you can see how amazing the painted over wallpaper turned out.

Here you will find a step by step renovation story of transforming an old bath into a new one. These charming small farmhouse bathroom ideas have a minimalist touch and will inspire you to add details to your master suite.

This year my daughter became engaged. After, her fiance and she decided to live in an older house so we came up with some small farmhouse bathroom ideas.

Update: new content added towards the bottom.

I like to call this space the newlywed suite. Doesn't it fit since they are going to be newlyweds?

Okay, this post is a work in progress so check back each week to see what has happened in the newlywed suite.

Small Farmhouse Bathroom Ideas

As I stated in the intro, this is a step by step renovation that will lead to loads of small farmhouse bathroom ideas. In fact, before it is over, I will bring you some farmhouse bedroom ideas along with minimalist touches.

Design Plan

With all interior design projects, it is good to have a plan ahead of time. A great place to start planning for any room is Pinterest. It was a treasure trove of modern farmhouse bathroom ideas. You're sure to find a great example or, more likely many great examples, of modern farmhouse style bathrooms. I like to recommend going through Pinterest and start pinning ideas. Have fun, and don't think about what others will think.

I also recommend looking at ideas in the bathroom category on our menu. Try white farmhouse bathrooms or small bathroom ideas.

Once you have many ideas pinned look at all of them for common elements. For example, are you gravitating to white, bright colors, dark, or light? What about the style, farmhouse, rustic, minimalist? And if there are details you love, then make sure to remember them. For example, white subway tile, and stained wood shelves.

Small farmhouse bathroom ideas featuring a design board with vanity, lighting, tile, barn doors, faucets and more.

After you have many ideas, you can create a mood board or design board like the one above. You will need to tweak it over and over until you get all the items on your design board that you plan to use.

For example, we started with gold fixtures and later changed them to oil-rubbed bronze because of cost.

Another idea when planning is to collect samples and place them together. I recommend sitting those pieces together that will be touching. For example, the subway tile and the penny tile will touch.

It is also good to step back from the sample when making decisions. Look at how it looks from a distance. I was looking at the grout samples with this subway tile, and I thought a really light grey would be nice, but when I step away from it, I realized a white would be better.

Material Selections

It is time to start selecting materials. I like to make an outline. It helps me stay on target with making selections, and it makes life easier for the person doing the work.

Here is a short example of a small farmhouse bathroom materials list, or you can peek at our official materials list for the newlywed's suite.

Now that you have all your materials picked out, it is time to begin demolition.

Shop tile and shower door:

Here are the faucets and lights. The light we used was a gold color.

Demolition of the Bathroom

Not everyone has the talent to demo a room and start from scratch but my daughter's future father-in-law is very handy with tools.

He decided this space needed to go back to the studs, so the tile, sheetrock, and all came down.

Moving Plumbing, Electrical & More

Once you have cleared out all the sheetrock, tile, and such, this is a great time to move any plumbing, electrical, walls, and just about anything that goes on behind the walls or ceiling.

In our case, we decided on a two-sink vanity, so we added more plumbing and need a little more plumbing in the shower.

Because we went with a beautiful single light from Linea Lighting, we didn't need to move the vanity light.

But we did add a light/exhaust fan over the shower and a recessed light over the niche.

Sheetrock

Now that the plumbing, electrical, lighting, and all are in place, it is time for sheetrock.

Okay, this is where it gets real. You know, like when you first see a bump on a mommy's belly, and everyone starts to see that there really is a baby growing inside.

When the sheetrock goes up, the room takes shape.

Look how amazing the bathroom is coming along! You can see where the vanity goes because there are two plumbing ports for the double sinks.

And the shower is taking shape.

Now it is time to mud and sand.

Next on the agenda is the primer.

Primer

After the sheetrock is installed, mudded, and sanded it is time for the primer.

See how amazing this is starting to look! The room is taking shape.

Our first coat of paint is a primer by Behr paint. Behr is sold at Home Depot, and it is a good quality paint. This primer went on very nicely. I cannot wait to show you the paint.

Paint and Floor Tile

After the primer is the paint. We wanted to select a white paint and think we made a great choice. We used Behr Marquee's color white and finish matte on the walls, trim, and ceiling.

You are probably wondering why the trim and walls are the same finish. Well, if you want our walls and trim to be the exact same white, then you have to stay with the same finish otherwise, a different finish will make the color of white appear different.

So for this bathroom, everything was one finish and color.

Floor Tile

Now let's talk about the floor tile. For the floor, we went with a marble style rectangle tile. We already had some of this tile on hand. This tile was also purchased at Home Depot.

For this tile, we staggered the tiles and did a knife-edge grout line. A thin grout line is much easier to take care of and gives a more streamlined vibe.

For the grout, we decided on white which gives the flooring a crisper clean feel.

Now that the floor tile is finished, it is time for the bathroom vanity.

Bathroom Vanity

When you get to this stage in a project, you start to feel excited. This Allen and Roth Presnell 61″ two-sink vanity came from Lowes. A few features of the vanity that make it a great fit for any bathroom.

First, it has a shelf on the bottom, which allows for more storage. Second, it comes with drawers which also make for great storage. Extra storage space is always a great idea.

And last this vanity came with a countertop, sinks, and hardware and the price was great.

Many stores have vanities that come with countertops and sinks. This is a great way to cut corners on your cabinetry.

Sink Faucet

After the vanity went in, the sink faucets were installed. Your faucet is a great place to build on your style. These modern oil rubbed bronze faucets hint on the farmhouse side but the modern feel brings them up to date.

Bathroom Vanity Light

Another great place to build on your design style is the vanity lighting. Linea lighting has really come through with this brass modern light fixture. The glass globes have not been installed, but I wanted you to see the finish.

What brings the faucet and the vanity light together is the antique finish on this brass vanity light. The darker tones join forces with the almost black of the oil rubbed bronze.

One thing to know when shopping online is the challenge of selecting the same finish from different vendors. So when in doubt, look at the finish of one piece and accent that in the other piece.

Bathroom Shower Tile

The fun gets exciting when you start installing the shower tile.

Small farmhouse bathroom ideas

Not only did we install tile in the shower, but we decided to wrap it around and into the niche where the shelves will go. Touches like this make a space. We went with lovely white tiles for the walls and white penny tile for the niche.

Another detail that can make a shower is adding a different tile to the shampoo niche. Here we chose a penny tile for the niche. It's the perfect place to add a contrasting shape.

Small farmhouse bathroom ideas

We also decided on white grout since the bride-to-be loves the color white. If you are wanting a minimalist style, then white on white is the perfect touch.

Bathroom Shower Faucets

For the master bathroom, we choose a matching rain head faucet with a separate handheld wand. The future married couple has an old dog named Ellie, and this setup is going to make bathing her much easier. It's a good idea to take such things into consideration when planning your space.

Bathroom Floating Shelves

Have you ever heard me say that good designs are in the details? Well, look at these gorgeous shelves.

Small farmhouse bathroom ideas

Eddie, the father of the groom, is a jack of all trades, and he really made the small space with these cedar floating shelves.

They add so much character to the bathroom. If you are designing an all-white bathroom, think about adding some wood to the room. Natural materials will bring some warmth and accessories, which we will discuss later. And they are the perfect place to add farmhouse decorations.

Bathroom Shower Door

Next on the agenda is the shower doors. For this modern farmhouse look, we decided on heavy glass clean lines. It really makes space feel more open.

Do you recall earlier when I showed you the light from Linea Lighting? Well, here is the light with the glass shades. Beautiful lighting can make a space. Now, all we need are beautiful bulbs.

These bulbs are fabulous for function. If you are going for a style, I would recommend an Edison bulb but if you need a well lite long-lasting bulb, then go for a led bulb.

Master Bathroom Accessories

We are really getting to the fun part. While visiting Atlanta, we did some shopping at Ikea for some accessories. They have a lot of great options for farmhouse bathroom decor.

Honestly, we could have spent hours there and planned to return. We got so many great ideas.

Our first area to focus on was the open shelving. Keeping with the minimalist vibe, Savanna wanted some artificial plants, white towels, candles, and a basket on the bottom for dirty clothes.

Small farmhouse bathroom ideas

One nice thing about Ikea is how inexpensive all their accessories are. All the plants came from Ikea. Natural elements, or natural looking in this case, bring color and life to the open shelves. They were a love complement to our white farmhouse bathroom ideas.

And towels and candles were wedding gifts, but the basket on the floor came from Ikea too.

Bathroom Art

Our second thing to focus on when accessorizing is the walls, and Smallwood Home had the perfect piece.

We fell in love with this charming word art! So Fresh and So Clean exactly describes the newlywed bathroom. It's a fantastic focal point.

This is our first time working with Smallwood Home, and we were very impressed with the quality. The font they used for their design really makes the whole space.

Now that we are almost finished with accessorizing, let's switch gears back to the cabinet.

Brushed Brass Cabinet Hardware

Now the room only needs one thing to pull it all together: the cabinet hardware. Changing out cabinet hardware can be the perfect way to bring a room together on a budget. Emtek came to the rescue with these beautiful brushed brass pulls.

I couldn't believe how closely they matched the lighting. The cabinet hardware was the finishing touch.

Emtek always delivers good quality finishes. These bar pulls are heavy and sold. They really added a higher-end look to the ready-made cabinet. Adding a good quality cabinet pull or knob will make a whole cabinet design. They are a great brand when considering your farmhouse bathroom design. It was so exciting to see our small farmhouse bathroom ideas come together. The farmhouse-style bathroom is almost complete.

Barn Door

Now that the bathroom is finished and the new carpet is down in the bedroom, all we needed was a little something special in the bedroom to set it apart, and barn doors did the trick. The sliding barn door makes the perfect entrance to a farmhouse style bathroom.

Again Emtek with their quality products and gorgeous designs helped us pull off a trending look with two barn doors.

Because the closet and bathroom were both on the same wall, we thought it would be fun to place the doors on one rail. The soft open and close feature makes them move smoothly. And the exposed spoke wheel gives character to the doors.

To finish off the doors, we used an appliance pull on one side in the same black to match the barn door hardware and faucets in the bathroom. I love adding a hint of what is to come inside a room with details like the black track and pull on the door.

This helps pull together the black and brushed gold that is in the bathroom. Just like the drawer pulls in the bathroom, this appliance pull for the door is heavy and quality. It feels nice to grab something that has a good feeling hand to it.

Conclusion

Well, for months now, we have been working on the newlywed suite, and I am happy to say it was finished and just in time for the wedding.

My daughter and new son-in-law are really enjoying their new bathroom and bedroom. We had a wonderful time coming up with small farmhouse bathroom ideas. Their wedding went great and was a joyous day of celebration for everyone.
