You can find seat cushions with deep seats or smaller scale pieces. They come in regular sofas, love seat, and chairs. But today we are looking specifically at affordable couches with removable slipcovers.

What are Slipcovered Sofas

Let me explain exactly what are slipcovered sofas compared to what we used to do with slipcovers.

In today's market, you can purchase a new sofa frame and then select a tailored slipcover that is specifically designed. Usually, there are three or more different color options and different styles.

Typically you select the frame and then the sofa slipcover color and all you do is slip the cover on the sofa when you get it home. The cover fits like a glove until you cannot even tell it has a removable and washable slipcover.

In the old days, you would go to the store and purchase a slipcover that was one size fits all. After placing it on the couch it didn't fit like a glove and you would have to tuck it and pull it daily to fit neatly again.

Now let's talk about what I mean by affordable slipcovered sofas. Today there are loads of slipcover sofas on the market but many are over one thousand dollars. In this post, I searched and did research on the best quality slipcovered sofas under a thousand.

Conclusion

I found it a little challenging to find affordable slipcovered sofas under one thousand dollars. However, in the process of looking for a perfect sofa at an affordable price, I found a good slipcovered sofa option over a thousand.

LL Bean had several great choices. I had the opportunity to try them out and found them all comfortable. My favorite is the Sunbreall slipcovered sofa model. They no longer carry this sofa but they have the Pine Point which is almost identical. This classic style sofa reminds me of the Ikea Ektorp sofa, which is my current sofa, but much more comfortable.

One of my favorite slipcover sofas over a thousand is a Pottery Barn sofa. I have a comparison of it and the Ikea sofa in the Best Slipcover Sofas from Pottery Barn to Ikea. This post is a first-hand experience of the two pieces. You can decide if you want to pay a little more for the Pottery Barn.

These affordable slipcover sofas are great! They're perfect for any living space, moving to college, young couples, families, homes with pets, or just about any age. What makes them perfect is the ability to wash the covers which makes them last for a long time. And you can buy replacement covers in different fabrics from white slipcovers to bright colors.

It is fun that you can buy one sofa and when you get tired of the color you can purchase replacement slipcovers? That is probably my favorite part. Talk about a great value!

This is my slipcover sofa in my living room. It is so much better than any sofa I have ever owned as far as keeping it clean. I have always wanted white furniture but wouldn't even consider it unless I could wash it.

The first time I had to wash my slipcover I was afraid it was going to shrink or come out looking like a mess. But to my surprise, it came out beautiful.

Here is how to wash Ikea slipcovers and how I have kept it clean.

How to Wash Ikea Slipcovers

The good news about Ikea couch covers is that they are machine washable and the cleaning method is very easy. This tutorial works on a new cover or old washable slipcover and a cover for the Ikea Ektorp chair.

Let's start with when is the best time to clean a slipcover sofa. I think the evening is a good time after the kids are in bed or on a day when everyone is gone.

But don't let that stop you from starting any time.

As I said before I have the Ektorp Lofallet beige slipcovers. The material for all three of Ikea's slipcovers is of the same kind of fabric. Vittayd white cover and Nordvall dark gray, which is a dark color, can be wash in the same fashion.

Update: Recently I discovered that you can find a new slipcover to fit Ikea Ektorp in other places. Here are other color slipcovers that say they fit Ikea Ektorp.

Vacuum the Sofa

Before you begin taking the Ikea couch covers off take your vacuum cleaner and do spot cleaning by removing any loose dirt, hair, candy, pennies. Okay, you get the point.

No telling what treasures you will find under the cushions. LOL!

Remove the Slipcovers

I like to wash my slipcover in two loads because the entire slipcover is to much for my washing machine. Start with the couch cushions and remove the Ektorp seat cushion covers.

On the next load remove the body of the slipcovered couch. My washing machine is a larger drum and could hold them all but I think you get a better washing if the items inside have more room to agitate.

Toss a Blanket on the Couch

Remember me saying that you can wash your Ikea Ektorp sofa covers anytime? Well, here is how life goes on at our house even when the slipcovers are washing.

I toss an old comforter on the sofa until everything is clean. This keeps the exposed cushions from getting dirty and it is comfier to sit on.

How to Spot Clean Slipcover

Now grab your slipcovers and spray bottle and spray any spots with Spray n Wash or Shout. I let this spot sit for about 5 minutes and scrubbed it a little to see if the spot would remove.

It helps to take the extra time to spot clean to remove the spot before you toss it in the washer drum. This will assure that your spot is gone.

How to Wash Slipcovers in Washer

Before you toss in your Ektorp covers turn on some warm water, easy or gentle wash cycle, and add mild detergent and Oxy clean. I use All free and clear detergent but I believe any liquid detergent will work. If you have a Vittayd White sofa slipcover let me recommend Drift detergent.

When my girls were babies Drift was amazing at getting their whites white. Drift and chlorine bleach will work great on the Ikea Vittaryd white cover and deliver clean white slipcovers. I have read and heard where many people use bleach to whiten their slipcovers but my slipcover is off-white so I have not tried bleach.

I didn't use hot water because hot water can sometime shrink fabrics. And I didn't use cold water because warm water will help loosen dirt. So that is why I used warm water.

Let the Ikea sofa covers agitate a little on a gentle cycle and then open the lid and make sure the items are below the surface of the water.

Now let it wash like normal.

How to Dry Sofa Slipcovers

It is time to dry your slipcovers. This is another simple step. After the washing is complete take the slipcovers and shake each one out and toss it in your dryers.

Put your dryer on 15 minutes on medium or low heat and start the dryer. I use medium heat.

When they are finished drying lay them on a clean bed and turn on the ceiling fan. Let them air dry one side for an hour and then turn them over and let them dry on the other side.

Now if you are planning to wash the body of the slipcovers go ahead and remove it and repeat all the washing steps and start washing the slipcover body.

How to Put on Ikea Ektorp Slipcovers

Next, if your slipcovers are not completely dry you can go ahead and put them back on the frame of the couch. It is actually a good thing that they are still slightly damp. Once on the sofa, it will help remove wrinkles.

Start with the body of the sofa which is easy to put the slipcover back on. There is velcro where the slipcover connects where the back and the seat connect. Start there and adhere to the velcro.

Then place the back and arms on and then neatly pull it all down into place. Now let's talk about how to put slipcovers on cushions.

The best way I know to put the slipcovers back on the cushions is to first put one end of the cushion into the cover and once it is inside a little turn it up where the slipcover is on top and start wiggling it down from one side then the other.

How to Keep your Slipcovers Clean

So here is my secret for keeping our slipcovers clean. Granted my daughters are older now and not having little ones makes this much easier to do.

Every week or two vacuum your sofa of any loose dirt, hair, food, and such. And if needed toss the cushion slipcovers in the wash every month or two. Our kids are grown now so we wash ours every six months. The material of the Ikea fabric is pretty durable and can withstand many machine washings.

I have found the need to wash the cushions slipcovers more than the body but keep an eye on the arms. They can get dirty quickly.

Well, I hope these steps have shown you how to wash Ikea slipcovers. Trust me it is very easy and the one thing I love the most about having a slipcover sofa is my sofa is clean.

If you need to spot clean test the cleaner in a spot that is not noticeable to make sure it doesn't discolor the fabric.

How to Wash Ikea Slipcovers

An easy to follow step by step guide on how to remove, spot clean, wash, dry and install slipcovers.

Prep Time 15 minutes

Active Time 4 hours

Total Time 4 hours 15 minutes

Materials

• Spot cleaner like Spray n Wash
• Oxy Clean
• Detergent

Tools

• Top load washing machine
• Dryer

Instructions

1. Begin by vacuuming the cushions and body of the couch.
2. Remove the cushion slipcovers
3. Spot clean any stains on the cushion slipcovers
4. Add warm water, detergent and oxy clean to water
5. Add cushion slipcovers to water and agitate the water and make sure the slipcovers are under the water
6. Let the wash cycle run
7. Remove the body of the slipcovered sofa
8. Spot clean any stains
9. Once the washer is complete remove the cushion covers and place them in the dryer
10. Set the dryer to medium heat for 15 minutes
11. Grab the body covers and repeat the washing process just like you did for the cushion covers
12. While the body is washing and the cushion covers are drying place the cushions back on the sofa and place a blanket over the sofa so the family can use it.
13. Once the cushion covers are finished place them out flat on your bed with the fan on to continue to dry for 20 minutes
14. Turn the covers over and dry another 20 minutes
15. Once the body is finished washing place it in the dryer on medium for 15 minutes.
16. After the body is dry place it back on the sofa
17. Then after the cushion covers are dry place them back on the sofa
18. And you are finished!!!! Yay!!!

Now let's think about purchasing a ceiling fan. Look around your room and see what kind of wood you have on furniture, floors, and trim. If your woods are dark woods then look for a dark wood fan. If they are light go with a light blade fan.

Next consider the vibe of your design plan. If it has a rustic feel go with a fan light kit that lends to that vibe. For example some black metal would work or a blade that has a distressed finish to it.

Slipcovered sofa ideas are fun to look at when they come from many different stores. This one is from a company called Comfort Works. They specialize in slipcovers for Pottery Barn and Ikea Sofas but can customize a slipcover for any sofa.

So, if you have a sofa that has good bones, but needs a new cover, check out this company!

There's those of you out there that have a sewing talent. Amanda Marie is one of those people.

Although this steps away from slipcovered sofas, it's an amazing looking slipcovered ottoman and we couldn't not feature it.

How to Decorate a Bookcase

If you have beautiful shelves but need help on how to decorate a bookcase then you have come to the right place. Let's waste no more time and jump right in on decorating your bookshelves.

But before we get to the stage of actually putting items on the shelves let's collect accessories to go on the bookcases.

Bookshelf Decor Ideas

Begin with a little research and look for bookshelf decor ideas on Pinterest, google images and my website under the home decor category.

Once I have pulled all my bookshelf ideas create a list of items that you see on the bookshelves in the photos and do some shopping at home and in the stores.

Next, start with your home and collect items that you feel would work on your bookshelves. Lay them out on a table, cross those items off your list and then do some shopping online or in stores.

Clear the Bookcases

Now clear the bookcases unless they are already cleaned off. Make sure there is nothing on the shelves.

This is a great time to do a bookcase makeover on the back of your bookcase as Susan did with these rustic farmhouse style boards. For more information on this shelf, background DIY check out this bookcase makeover post.

It is also a great time to clean your shelves. 😉

Position Large Items

Now that you have all your items laid out on a table or floor nearby start with the larger items first.

Position them on the shelves balancing them from shelf to shelf along the way like in this photo.

I like to do a criss-cross design at first starting with the top shelf and placing a large item like this clock.

Keep moving your way down until you get to the bottom piece.

One thing to remember is to give yourself some grace and allow yourself the right to move things around as you go or at the end when you stand back and access everything.

As you place items you might find that something you already placed would look better somewhere else. Or you may come across something better later when you do more shopping.

Medium Size Pieces

Now I like to introduce medium size items. Medium size items work nicely nestled together like this letter B and picture on an easel.

The letter B wasn't quite tall enough so we added a book under it to give it height. This is a decorators trick when they need an item to be taller.

Also, later we decided to turn all the books around so they were all uniform. Look closely at the picture of the finished product when you get to the end. It gives a nice uniformed look when the books are turned around and all you can see are all the pages.

Small Items

Now for those little items especially those with sentimental value like these sweet sterling baby cups.

Small items can get lost very easily if you are not careful. Placing these cups on a shelf with a single plate helps people to see them well.

I love that many pieces in Susan's home have a story and are meaningful.

A cheap and easy way to add decor to your bookshelves is with one of our free printables. Check out the botanical print that has been used in this picture frame.

These binoculars are another smaller and meaningful piece. They belonged to a loved one. We paired them with some field books that also belonged to that same loved one.

Keep in mind when you are placing items to let negative space work into the design too. It helps the flow of your pieces and allows light to travel around accessories so that the eye can see each item carefully.

Using up all the negative space can create an overwhelming design and each piece gets lost.

Plants

Whenever you are decorating your bookcases think about plants. Susan wanted to use real plants so here is an example where we moved things around and took down the artificial plants on the top shelf.

I didn't love this artificial plant to start with so when Susan said she wanted to go with all real plants I was glad to change it.

So we moved the suitcases from the other side to this side which helped balance out the two bookcases.

Doesn't that look better? And then we added plants to the bottom row of shelves so it would be easy for Susan to care for them.

I love that Susan has real plants on her bookcases!

Decorating with NestSet

Now for the best part!

If you have your doubts about styling your shelves even after reading this post and you want that designer look well, I have an idea for you.

Decorate Bookshelf

Before we wrap up this tutorial here is a checklist on how to decorate bookcases.

• Look for bookshelf ideas and save photos
• Shop for large, medium and small items
• Place all items on the table or floor near bookcases
• Sit large items first one on each shelf
• Place medium size items (nest items in odd numbers)
• Sit small items (make sure they don't get lost)
• Remember it's is okay to move things around until you get just the right feel and look.

This styled shelf is smart and classy. We love the dark wood and metal of the actual shelf, but the real stars of the show are the decor sat atop the shelf.

All the white and cream kitchenware is sweet in contrast to the dark wood. And we are “thankful” for the little touches of green. Absolutely beautiful!

Those matcha green built-ins are showstoppers, and there is so much to celebrate here. Like the sweet cotton wreaths, which reminds us of our cotton decor post, the lovely collection of pitchers, the classic, industrial lights… We love everything!

Our Cozy Nest

I honestly cannot get enough of successfully styled floating shelves, so here's one more set! And oh my goodness it is so beautiful!

For one, the dark wood shelves look fantastic up against the gorgeous shiplap. Furthermore, the vintage pieces are giving us all the right farmhouse feels.

Magnolia May Cottage

Speaking of vintage farmhouse feels, this styled shelf does not disappoint either. Remember Megan from one of our previous Friday favorites posts? We are so excited to feature her again because she is a talented shelf styler!

From the burlap curtains to the sweet bakeware, we are in love with her shelves!

Decor and Dogs

We couldn't leave out a beautiful table with an incorporated shelf.  Meghan has styled this shelf with charm using a basket, lantern, tobacco basket and more.

But we want to call attention to the letter art over the table.  Isn't it adorable!

Baker Nest

This may be the most charming built-in I have seen! We are always impressed with the things Katie does, but she has really outdone herself with this sage green beauty.

The creamy white kitchenware contrasts beautifully, but the little splashes of wood and bronze make the look.

Having a cozy nook in your home will have all your friends and family reading all day long.

Check out these items I discovered while searching for ideas after my reading nook round up post went live.

HAMMOCK SWING

I am not going to waste any time sharing our very own hammock swing because I get messages all the time wanting to know where we found it.

Overall we are in love with this reading nook swing and have already spent countless hours here.  If I could add one thing it would be a circle cushion just the size of the seat.

HANDMADE COFFEE CUP

What's a cozy nook without a good cup of coffee?  I discovered loads of beautiful handmade adorable mugs on Etsy and thought it would make these reading corner ideas even more special.

BASKET

Here is a thought.  Bring some plants into your cozy nook.

Plants help clean the air in your home so this will make your nook even better.  But what really attacked me to this plant is the basket.  Isn't it gorgeous!

PILLOW COMPASS

Whether you have a nice chair, hammock swing or a reading nook canopy, pillows are a must.  What a fun pillow to add to your cozy nook collection.

READING CANOPY

I adore this canopy!  Kids love reading canopies.  There's just something fun about hiding inside and crossing the bridge to their imagination in a good book.

FAVORITE BOOKS

I couldn't share all these reading corner ideas without sharing my all time favorite book.

If you are a follower of Jesus and you love fiction that takes place in a time in history then you will enjoy this book.

This story occurs during the gold rush out west mostly and it parallels the story of Hosea in the bible.
